PlayStation 3 Video Delivery Service spreads to Europe
When Sony isn't busy adding Facebook functionality or potentially courting Firefox for its PS3, it likes nothing better than to dream of global all-encompassing online services and stores. A step toward that goal is the company's recent introduction of the PS3 Video Delivery Service into the heart of Europe. PlayStation loyalists in Deustchland, España, France, and the United Kingdom can now use their beloved console (or the PSP) to grab movies from a selection that is set to grow at a consistent pace of 50 new films being added per week. Both SD and HD versions are available, with the cheaper variants going for €1.99 / £2.49 to rent or €7.99 / £6.99 to purchase, and you can see a trailer for the new service after the break.
[Thanks, aygie]

i rent the last night Batman Begin in HD, 7640 MB... still downloading!
€1.99 / £2.49 to rent??
That exchange rate is definitely screwy!!
@poke
The UK must be a "premium service"?
@poke
as a german you always feel being pranked when talking about exchange rates. We get the "same" price, but you pay US$, we pay in € (example: MacBook Pro 1149US$ in USA, 1149€ in Germany)
1€ = 1.49US$
Maybe this could be explained because of our 24 months warranty in Germany, but if i rent a movie (online) or buy a DVD/BR we always have to pay a lot more.
This is all very nice but I'm still waiting (for the better part of two years now) for the PlayStation Network to be turned on in my country (Slovakia). The Sony staff have been giving me wrong information and false hope the entire time - as I've been emailing them quite often, but to date still nothing is happening!!!
test - please be verified...
BELGIUM! I want BELGIUM! jeesh. on the other hand we have our silly little thing called download limits (with the two mayor internet distributors) over here that really completely render this useless if movies in HD are around 8 gig.
At last :)
Anyone know how much the HD rentals will be?
@SewerSide £4.49 :)
I guess us canadians will have to continue our unabashed pirating of anything Sony Pictures produces. To bad we couldn't have a venue , say our PS3's , to purchases said films.
I saw this up last night. I think the HD rentals are about 4-5 quid (£4.95)?
In any case - the few that I saw that had details against them seemed to indicate they only had 2 channel sound. No DTS, no 5.1. Meh.
@Farkough
£5 is too much for this to be worth it to me, especially with on stereo audio. They had a chance to really push HD here. I can go to the cinema for £7-8 or half that on Ornge Wednesdays!
£3 with HD audio and I'm sold. How much does an HD movie on Sky Box office cost out of interest?
@David Austin Not sure, but I think it's less than £4, plus £10pm for the HD subscription. And that will have Dolby Digital. The downside to it, I suppose, is the selection isn't as great.
Their main competition in this will be something like iTunes & Apple TV. I don't have iTunes available to check up on at the moment.
This is going to be the tipping factor for me getting a slim
Way too expensive here in Germany, I won't pay 6 Euro just to rent Batman Begins in HD
No Finland on the list. WTF Sony?
@Tombio
Northern countries seems to be a bag of hurt for all these services. Same thing with Apples iTunes. We still only got the music...
@ Nuts
I suppose the only reason for slow roll-outing of new products is that Scandinavia is such a small business area. Huge companies like Sony and Apple (and many more) simply ignore our pennies on their rivalry for big bucks.
is this part of the 3.10 update that i installed last night?
also - did anyone else lose the iplayer icon from the XMB?
@shapey
I actually gained the iPlayer icon!!! My PS3 was refurbished so it never came with the original update.
YAY finally Canadian's can wa...oh, not yet eh...hmmm dammit
Oh well, maybe this shows it's eventually going to be implemented in Canada soon, hahaha who am I kidding...
this service is useless to me and many others i dont think sony actually take into account much like microsoft that the majority of internet providers in the UK have download limits some alot worse than others.
Plus still in the UK there are more people still only on 2mb broadband than any other speed.
who rents films anyway lol why pay £4-5 to rent 1 movie its rediculous
and dont get the started on the games on demand stuff :S
Until they lower the price by at least a $1 and offer trailers of the movies it will never succeed.
About time! I wish companies would realise that the movie download market is almost completely untapped in the UK. (I know there are a few, e.g. iTunes, Sky Player, but nothing like what is available in the states)
I would love to see more stories investigating why Sony has not released the PlayTV over here. I would trade the video download service to Europe for that capability anyday! I wish someone would give Tivo a run for their money, even without including cablecards.
Downloaded the update today , first impressions are I'm impressed. I've got an AppleTV and to be honest can't see much of a need for it now that I can also stream from my iMac.
Definitely about time! I'm sure they said at the US launch that it would be hitting Europe at the beginning of the year and that seemed a long way off at the time. Now I just need to get my PS3 repaired..
Sure, cause who cares about Canada right?
Why are we left behind? I mean always? :o(
Would like to have this and the VidZone, too, here in the Czech Republic...
