Apple hits back at Verizon in new iPhone ads (video)
Now look, we're not saying we know for sure that Apple thinks Verizon's latest round of merciless attack ads on its device and US carrier are worth responding to, but these latest iPhone spots would certainly suggest it. A new campaign launching tonight focuses on the iPhone's ability to carry voice and data simultaneously on AT&T's network, and each of the two new TV spots ends with the line "Can your phone and your network do that?" From where we're sitting, it looks like between this new round and AT&T's Luke Wilson-manned comparison spots, both the phonemaker and carrier are fully stepping into the ring. Way to get their attention, guys. See the full clips after the break.

so this commercial is tell us that the phone can do this but it can't have interchangeable battery. this is basically a battery killer like having the GPS running.
There is no opportunity to sue ATT/Apple as some suggest. The ad never makes a claim that the iphone is the only phone that unique can be on a call and browse at the same time, they only ask the question, "Can your network do that?"
However maybe VZ should do an ad in NYC with consumers on the street with iphones and ask them how there service is? Can your network hold a call or can you browse rapidly in NYC during a work day? Those are good questions to ask just like this ad.
att is running out of money with all these suits they're filing recently. there's no actors in these commercials.
okay put your friends on hold while you check out porn. awesome, great way to piss off your friends.
let me know when it can maintain calls and dig to china.
My Sprint Palm Pre can actually do exactly what Apple and Att is claiming but mine just a bit faster in reality. 3G Baby.
Droid vs. "more capable" Milestone? You are of course mistaken.
They are equally capable, but both had to omit some software functionality due to patent issues (multi-touch for Droid, Google Nav for Milestone).
As for not being able to use Droid outside of US... for me, and vast majority of Doid users, that is not an issue at all, so why should we care. An insignificant fraction of Droid users this might be a problem for is not even worth mentioning.
While talking about about usage outside of US, AT&T's iPhone is effectively not usable overseas either (unless you are willing to pay obscene roaming fees, or find a way to unlock it).
i like boobies
and AT&T only stands for one of one things
Ass & Two Titties
I
1) The fact that most Verizon users don't know that their 3G network can't support simultaneous call and data connection show how unimportant this feature is.
2) Someone should try to do exactly what the video is doing in real time on the iPhone, and see if they can actually get back to the call at the end of it.
Ouch .... Well this Advertisment shows that a lot of people at apple cant sleep at night with Verizon and Droid breathing down their necks ....
I don't know why everyone whines about AT&T. Where I live, I have full bars, great call quality, and not one dropped call.
Is this problem just on iphones? Maybe I'm not understanding something? Please tell me if I am.
I thought the only network that couldn't do that would be the old 9600 baud GSM data protocol, and perhaps CDMA? I don't know... But I'm sorry to tell you (AT&T/Apple?) that yes, this has been possible for a decade, starting at the time when mobiles were only able to browse WAP pages and so forth on GPRS.
ok Guys i have got a great idea for an advertisement for AT&T/Apple .... Hear me out ( and dont be biased ) ... SO similar setting i.e an !phone and a pair of hands and the ever so tacky white background...
Iphone is in sleep mode when a call comes the call is answered by the hand and there are small bubbles ( just like the sms bubbles from Iphone showing the entire conversation ) and after like 10 seconds the person on the other end asks " did u check my email " and the hands get to work and go to the email application and show the email ( while the call is on hold ) and before he can read the subject of the email the call drops and the !phone crashes and the hands throw the phone away " and the caption reads " Mother %^*^@#^%@*%^$&*^@$%(@^(%@) " hahahahahahahahaha
This is how Verizon wins the battle .... its all down to the names ....Verizon sounds so cool ... rhymes with Verisign ( leading security solutions company ) which means ur secure and u have peace of mind ... even rhymes with Horizon which is also soothing ...
NOW At&t .... well it rhymes with shitty ....:D ....also one might misconstrue the abbreviation to A Toilet & Tampons or Against Technology & Teachers...
yes my phone can do that
Apple needs to create an app that lets the Iphone users make adds for ATT. Cause clearly it looks like they need an app for that...
The hole hand holding and iphone showing the features is getting old. Time for something new.
Caller: Want to go to the movies
On Phone: Sure... at.. ti.. is it... aying?
Caller: I'm sorry... what???
On Phone: I said Sure... what time... aying?
Caller: Hold on, let me walk down the block a little. OK, now what did you say?
On Phone: WHAT TIME... PLAYING?
Caller: Oh, What time is it playing?
Oh Phone: YES!
Caller: let me see... uh... hold on while I bring up my movie guide app... flipping... flipping... flipping... geez, wish I could customize these screens to find my apps... flipping... ah here it is... hold on...
((minutes later))
On Phone: Dude... your eating all my minutes and killing my battery. Just call me back.
Caller: It's still redrawing... just hold on one more minute... ok?
(( silence))
Caller: Hello? Hello? Damn it!
Voice Over: Can you phone and network do that? iPhone... exclusively on the at&t network.
*3G not available in all areas, for everybody else, it will be even slower.
Ha ha. Isn't that the truth?
@JayMonster
LMFAO!!!!!
SO SO SO TRUE.
All of the ATT/Apple commercials are misleading. I was on ATT in NY Metro for 10 years and always had call issues. Moved to Verizon with the Droid launch and no dropped calls. And even better - when someone calls me, my phone rings.
Would be a dagger to VZW id they used Owen Wilson's uber-distinctive voice over on the new tv ads. He's the more popular (and talented) Wilson brother anyway.
They were trying REALLY hard last night during the History Channel's Surviving the Holidays special with Louis Black. Still lame though, they were all saying the same things - you can do this and that while on the phone with someone on an iphone, and the same with on a droid. So.......who cares? Luke Wilson was lame, too.
Nice job making Verizon's point Apple. Yeah, you can do that, but your network sucks so bad that very few can actually do that (some place other than an ad)...
I do it not no problem all of the time.....
Omg this has to be the mist times I've commented on an article. These comments are crazy. I live in new jersey Atlantic city actually, and my service is ok, no good! Every once in a while I'll drop from 3g to edge but it isn't for long. Please stop bitching! And yes I do use this feature often. It's crazy that this is the most commented on article here. Shot I'm an engadget fan I check the site every 10 min. I think they should kill the article.
well fuck us. let's all move to Jersey!
That was LAME....Verizon still kicked their asses in that Misfit Toys commercial hahahaha.
@CharlieX
Not saying that. Shit jersey has high taxes and the car insurance is crazy. My only Ray of sun shine is I get good service with AT&T. I had the big V once with a razon v3 I wanted to take that phone and slit my wrist and throat. Lol.
Personally, I'll take simultaneous voice and data over multitasking any day. Though that's just me and I'm sure some people would rather have it the other way around.
I only switched to AT&T for the iPhone... :P
So when a client calls and asks if you got their email you can B.S. your way through a phone call:
"Uhhhhh, yes, I uh,(click, click) DID get your email, and, I uh, find it very interesting, and I'm(click, click, scroll) looking forward to, uh getting a chance to talk to you about all the things you brought up in that Email which I got and read previously. Yes. Let's do a movie and then have sushi later tonight."
FYI, Janet and Ted are real people. Ad agency--check them out (her--really).
Maybe it's just me, but I've never needed to use another app while talking on the phone. And I'm a Pre user who multitasks all the time.
Yeah, why don't you sit back down , big V.
Hmm...so your "phone and network" can be on a call while doing 1 application at a time? what can my phone and network do? how about be on a phone call and get turn by turn navigation at the same time. Or run apps in the background while doing any number of other things and not losing my place or having to save something just because i dont want to lose any changes i made because of a thing called multi-tasking. etc etc
Yo Iphone,
I'm really happy for you, I'm gonna let you finish, but Verizon has one of the best networks of all time.
Before this add. I bet 90% of iphone users didn't even know that they can call and browse the web, shoot email the same time...LMFAO...
Video is out...
this must be new... cuz ive been on the iPhone and tried to look something up on google maps and it said "cant do data while on call" or something like that. Did they change something?
Also, i am one that will be jumping ship to Android early next year. Im done with ATT and iPhone. And this is coming from an ATT employee.
The iPhone does not multi-task because doing so seriously drains the battery . Apple changed the game with the iPhone. Everyone is now playing catch-up.
Uh oh! Those videos don't seem to exist.
