Apple hits back at Verizon in new iPhone ads (video)
Now look, we're not saying we know for sure that Apple thinks Verizon's latest round of merciless attack ads on its device and US carrier are worth responding to, but these latest iPhone spots would certainly suggest it. A new campaign launching tonight focuses on the iPhone's ability to carry voice and data simultaneously on AT&T's network, and each of the two new TV spots ends with the line "Can your phone and your network do that?" From where we're sitting, it looks like between this new round and AT&T's Luke Wilson-manned comparison spots, both the phonemaker and carrier are fully stepping into the ring. Way to get their attention, guys. See the full clips after the break.

My Pre can do voice and data and GPS and whatever else on Wifi...so yeah ATT my phone and my Sprint network can do that considering 95% of the places I am at have Wifi and I never turn my wifi off.
Voice and Data on Wifi != Voice and Data on CDMA2000
Fail.
1) I didn't think it was that bad. The land of misfit toys is way worse (and way better).
2) Everyone knows that Verizon has the best network and the Iphone is one of the coolest phones around (but so are the droid and lg env touch htc eris etc.. ) SO HEY APPLE: DUMP AT&T FOR VERIZON! (& HEY VERIZON QUIT GIMPING PHONES and having bad practices)!
3) Why would apple even go to bat for AT&T? Hey AT&T your little sister just fought your fight...aren't you proud.
Wait, people use their phones to talk?
I think the load times in the demo are preposterously impossibly fast.
No, that's just our new iPhone 3GSSS, our fastest iPhone we've ever made. And BOOM! there you have it

RTFFP (FP = FinePrint).
Verizon and Sprint don't do simultaneous voice and data.
Oh no, you didn't do that Apple and AT&T! Nothing's new here guys, moving on.
When Verizon showed the scene where all the polly pretty iPhones being crunched, that was interesting (I chuckled there).
When Apple/AT&T show this commerical, its like 'preaching to the fucking choir' with the software/apps. My fucking G1 can multi-task while I am on a phone call with someone. Who cares about some fucking apps when you cannot keep the basic needs (3G network, reception, etc.) up and running.
Who wins? I think Verizon still have the upper hand at this moment. Way to go, Apple/AT&T for wasting money away.
It's not only about multitasking, it's about accessing the network while on the phone.
For me that is more important than multitasking 2 third party apps.
With my G1 (awesome phone) on AT&T network (it sucks balls), I was able to multi-task by talking to someone on the phone WHILE I am web browsing to get the information for the person on the other end. I was on EDGE network this entire time. I used to have iPhone 3G, so I have a valid opinion since I have already compared both devices. In my professional opinion, any Android-based phones win.
-sigh-
FALSE
EDGE does NOT support simultaneous voice and data unless you were on wifi.
and if you were, then you missed the whole point.
good luck with your life
yeah, the phone can do that, but AT&T can't lol.
oh yeah, and Android, on T-Mobile and Sprint, AND Verizon can do that. i know because i have a mytouch 3g on t-mobile and i do it all the time.
T-Mobile on HSDPA, yes. Sprint/Verizon on EVDO, nope.
Ya EVDO doesn't allow both voice and data simultaneously , but i'd take having ultra reliable and a deployed everywhere where i go data services that doesn't let me talk at the same time, then one that has spotty coverage, thats unreliable, but lets me talk and use data simultaneously. Besides even if i got a call while surfing the web on att, chances are the calls gonna drop anyways. CDMA FTW!
jeez - i wish my iphone could do that browsing so fast - we'd need to have an in depth convo before i'd be able to give him the movie times
What about: investing these marketing millions in actually improving network quality. Sounds boring, or does it?
Hey...that's my movie theater!
Yes my phone and my network can do that. Oh and I dont have an iphone and I don't have ATT. So whats their point??
@Shootingblue
This ad is aimed at Verizon, not the other carriers. T-Mobile can do simultaneous voice and data, but AT&T/Apple dosn't care enough about them to devote ad campaigns against them. Verizon's the target here, and it's impossible to do simultaneous voice and data on them (regardless of what phone you have).
That is the point.
isn't this feature still dependant on 3G coverage? so you can do it on AT&T...if you have 3G coverage that works...
When will Verizon learn? You can't beat me. I could sell a giant turd in a pretty box for $299 on a 2 year contract if I wanted. Hell, people would be lining up to buy it. Never mess with me.
Man's gotta point. *Nods head*
When can I reserve it?
Everyone knows that detractors are the most vocal. I can quite happily make phone calls and use data on my iPhone 3GS...
(most of the time :D )
what's funny is they don't mention that the simultaneous voice and data ONLY works if you are in 3g coverage. LOL. att stinks.
Yep, and AT&T's 3G coverage STINKS, which is the whole point of Verizon's ads.
Yeah, I remember this was supposedly a huge negative for the original iPhone, when it was on EDGE. Then, no one ended up really caring.
It is ironic that AT&T runs this now, after complaining that Verizon's commercials didn't take into consideration the vast EDGE network that AT&T maintains.
Not true, I have the original iPhone and it does this on the edge network.
Next!
dude, i just tried forcing my 3g to edge only and doing simultaneous voice and data. it does NOT work. instead of being a blind fan boy, know what you are talking about before you post. it ONLY WORKS WHEN YOU ARE CONNECTED TO 3G. and obviously the att 3g coverage is crap, not to mention unreliable. pretty sad that that is the best att and apple together could come up with. lets face it apple/att, verizon hit you with some serious ads and it hurts not only your pocket book but your feelings as well. nice job verizon.
Yes my phone (Moto DROID) and my network (VZW) CAN do that! and i do all the time... browse web while in a call, check email, facebook... you name it!
Hmm, I just tried on my Droid, full 3G signal...can't get it to work though. Is there some sort of trick I don't know about? Besides connecting to WiFi, of course.
Why isn't Apple embarrassed by now?
+1 for apple... after -20 :)
Naaaa... Honestly i really like the iphone, just that i feel like a douche just holding it.
Okay, I did not know the iPhone can do that.
That should probably increase the traffic on a already overloaded network.
This is actually easy to respond. Show a map of where you can do voice and dat and show a map where you cant. the massive dead zones really kills their whole argument
Big deal... my crappy LG Vu, is apble to do that.
What's funny is that some of you guys actually seem to care. Let them fight it out... competition breeds a better environment for the consumer.
Competition is lowering the price... $40 for talk, $30 for data, $20 for messages, $10 for tax/fees. Then turn around and pay for apps?
This battle is surely going to heat up even more. Oh boy oh boy! This is more exciting than being excited on the Christmas Eve as a little boy.
i think the problem here is nobody does that very often - or even knows whether or not their phone can do that. amiright?
Nope. I do it all the time.
i suppose i meant that not *as many* people do that as...say...need good service. so verizons ad is better.
Had AT&T, got rid of them because the coverage was terrible. Duh.
The ONLY time I can think of wanting to do data and voice at the same time is if I had a BT headset and was actively using Navigation. Otherwise, you're talking on the phone and likely don't need to be using data at the same time (unless you're tethered).
I think the iphone on At&t is a great combination an......*dropped call*
nicely put.........(*dial tone*)
@aplen22
I pay $50 a month for my storm to have unlimited texting and unlimited data usage and I only call people that have verizon so I don't waste my family minutes
Look... Your not only wasting my minutes, but your killing my battery. Just text me and I'll text you.
AT&T is so lame!
How many people give a flying flip if their phone does voice/data at the same time, especially when the AT&T network is so notoriously sparse to begin with.
Give it up, AT&T! You suck and that's that. I wouldn't get a Jesus phone from you if it were FREE.
You are right. Most people don't.
Then again, MOST people don't give a flying flip about running 2 third party apps at the same time.
Of course, here on Engadget, you'd think that was the most important reason for buying a phone...
