Apple's new
Core i7-based iMac might be a performance monster, but it looks like the whole family's having some problems getting
out of the gate: in addition to the
previously-noted performance issues with the Core 2 Duo models, a quick glance across Apple's support forums and on other Mac boards around the web reveals that some machines are showing up DOA and / or with cracked screens. We're a little more familiar with the DOA issue, since the new i7 we just bought doesn't boot at all, but the cracked screen issue seems to be equally common and mostly affecting the bottom left corner, from what we can tell. Now, our review Core 2 Duo 27-inch iMac is perfectly fine, and
Chris Ziegler's new Core i7 machine doesn't have any problems either, so these obviously aren't universal issues, but if you're about to stick one of these under the tree for someone it might be wise to do some surreptitious testing first.
This is just Apple being REALLY committed to the environment
@Engadget
Where the EFF is the cracked screen?
and why are you showing the backside of the display if the post is about cracked screens and the machine not booting up?
P.S.: Please pay your designers a lil more to make the replies auto-expand, i hate playing this non-flash game of expanding over 50 replies.

Two non-working iMacs out of a million working ones isn't such a bad percentage. So you send them back and get them replaced. What's the big deal about that as long as customers get satisfaction?
Those packers were probably fired from Windows PC companies that have been steadily losing money and Apple hired them just to give them a break.
@Average White Boy
Your mother got satisfaction last night.
Why isn't this "breaking" news?
Badum tish!
@Alexicov Nicely Done.
@Alexicov Because the other 95% of iMacs that shit are fine, including mine and 4 other people I know.
Wow. Apple is slipping up as of late.
@KeatMP
You hear that Apple fanboys? APPLE ISN'T UNTOUCHABLE. Maybe now the fanboys ought to stop worshiping that company while trampling on users of other platforms.
@KeatMP
Slipping? Hardly. We had three brand new Dell laptops we ordered turn up DOA last week (out of 6). The company exchanged them without question. QA in the PC business has shifted to the consumer.....
@KeatMP
Apple shipping, its a box of hurt.
@KeatMP
No, Apple fans just have short term memory. They had huge issues with the Performa series years back, but that has all but been forgotten and forgiven. Same will happen with this snafu, it will be written off as a fluke. They use mostly standard computer parts and they are prone to have issues just like the PC.
@KeatMP Not as much as this new redesign, My comment appeared to be posted, and it shows up in my CP(Getting to that is a wtf in itself), But not here.
Orig. Comment
The Tibook's hinges, ibook's logic board and the Macbooks crappy cracking plastic are others.
As of late?
And here I was about to ask "Cant Apple ever release a new product line without major widespread issues?"
Wow!
I sold one to a customer and the customer brought it back with a crack in the same described place!
We still replaced it, but this now makes it clear that it really wasnt the customer's fault.
@uShak Meanwhile, "the customer" thinks you're a total douche for badgering him for two hours about how the screen cracked before telling him to take it up with his credit card company.
@uShak Even more sad is that you learned this via Engadget instead of internal sales channels.
@Bosco
Actually we didn't badger the customer about it at all.
All it takes for the customer to get what they want\deserve is to be humble, logical, and realistic. Any retailer would love to help a customer who isn't yelling, screaming, and demanding right off the bat (which happens everyday)
Respect others and you receive the same respect.
Example:
Customer A: "Hi i'd like to return this product, it is unopened, but im a few days out of return poilcy. could I still return it?"
Customer B: "I want my money back right now!" -"this is out of policy" -"BLARRRGGG"
I guarantee Customer A would love to come back and I would love to have him back.
Simple, humble, communication skills will make the world a better place.
@Stepdg
It was the first shipment of them, im sure there werent any reports of it yet. Plus it seems to still be a small amount of units.
Try plugging it in

Glad I'm not the first one who saw that.
Damn! I knew someone was going to say that by the time I got here! : (

Hey! that's just apple's secret new wireless power technology they quietly slipped into the new Core i7 iMacs. It sucks electrons from the air through that socket on the back.
@(Unverified) Have you tried opening the RAM cover to see if one of the RAM sticks is loose? It's possible that one may have slipped out from all the moving around during shipping. Just a thought.
My box looked really beat up when I received mine, fortunately it works flawless.
ruh roh.
the myth has once again been dispelled.
@gerrrg
jesus h. man, don't ruin EVERYBODY's fun _-_
Even if it doesn't work, it's still shiny and made by Apple!
@ai4281 By the time you read this. It has been the future.
got mine in last week, works beautifully all 27inches of it, sux for the rest o yall
Maybe you should try switching to Windows - not so much so that you can use a different computer, but so that you could fix all the problems with your web site on browsers other than Safari.
@NohOne
problems? I'm pretty sure Safari is the only non-beta browser that hits 100 on the acid3 (maybe the only browser period).
which means that if it's not displaying correctly, it's got something to do with your browser not conforming to web standards
@NohOne maybe if you uninstall the Norton, myspace, google, yahoo, msn, live, AND Bing toolbars you would be able to see it.
@NohOne
I had written a response how your ACID argument was foolish, as well as a list of bugs with IE, FF, and Safari (Mac and iPhone), but either I was banned or there are bugs with their comment system.
Oh well. Seems they don't want to improve their web site.
@snugs
I'm pretty sure Opera 10 does that too, though I'm not sure which one did it first.
geez, talk about a bad Apple
@manifest3r ZING!
So much for "it just works". ;)
@MikeZ
you didn't hear? Apple changed it, it's now:
"It just works...most of the time"
Apple is really beginning to let me down.
Another new feature that Apple slipped in? How generous..
if you bought one for someone as a present, this sounds like a good excuse to do the unboxing yourself!
@snugs
If you can afford to buy someone an iMac as a present just ask your butler to check it out when he buys it for you.
Apple?
More like a lemon, AMIRITE?
@snugs Oh, get lost with the acid3 test already.
If it doesn't work with the most popular browsers (I'm not even talking about IE here; the site has issues with Firefox as well), it's not much of a standard.
It's one of the first things you learn as a web designer. Learn to make your site work on your target audience's computers. Your site may be standard's compliant, but that doesn't mean jack if the guys that generate the hits can't see shit.

@snugs Chrome (may be beta) but still says hi.

@snugs Opera also conforms to Acid 3. Also, this website looks perfectly fine in Firefox and IE8, so YMMV.
@snugs
From a post I made a few days ago:
"BTW, ACID3 is not standards compliant, either. As it requires TT fonts, which is not supported by any W3C standard (again, I invite you to show me where, among W3C standards, TT fonts are required). It also tests CSS3.0 something that is not yet a W3C standard. So if something follows CSS3.0, it is not standard since the CSS3.0 draft may change before it becomes standard. It is much like you walking up to me and telling me you defined a new word. You tell me the definition of your new word. We may now know that word, but if it is not in the Oxford or Webster's dictionary, it is not a real word, and if others do not understand that new word, it is not their fault for not knowing something that does not exist."
But there are many problems that are not specific to IE, FF, or even Safari:
1) Click Reply when you are not logged in. You will get a script error rather than taking you to a login page
2) On Safari, start selecting text with the mouse and move the mouse all the way to the right. The text box will nearly hide.
3) They still have not fixed the set an avatar picture. I have tried using IE, FF, and Safari to upload a new image, using multiple resolutions, and still do not have a picture.
4) On IE, if you click the plus or minus, it does a full reload of the page where it only does a in-place up/down rank in Safari - which has absolutely nothing to do with ACID3
5) Bugs where Safai, when you click Reply, does not always scroll to the comment box, but does on other browsers.
6) On my iPhone and iTouch, when you browser it shows a comment box and user/pass under every single post.
And so many more bugs... It is bad when you wish for the old comment system.
