O
iPhone3,1, where art thou? Last time we spotted that signature, it was buried in lines of code as part of a
beta OS 3.0 firmware build. Now according to data from analytics software inside iBART, the San Francisco-centric transportation app has been host to a new visitor with the aforementioned device identification number. As
MacRumors points out,
iPhone2,1 was originally spotted in October 2008 and later became the
iPhone 3GS about eight months later. Not that it's necessarily the case Apple will keep to the same schedule -- nor should it come as a surprise that the company's maybe-kinda-sorta looking into a successor to its prized
moneymaker -- but if you happen to be in the Bay Area and see someone quietly pulling out a sleek touchscreen, it might be in your best interest to make friends.
@Cam I am not a tool
@AndroidRokz Got any links to some good news stories about it?
@AndroidRokz Give me a break Engadget does a fairly decent job of giving Android it's due.
@AndroidRokz well, what should we know about Android 2.1 then?
@AndroidRokz
Not sure what you mean. The sites reporting Android 2.1 are saying there's no new features -- just bug fixes as you would expect from a minor point release. There's not even any specifics of which bugs it fixes yet.
OMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!
there is a new iSomething being tested? i cant wait till we become the united states of apple!!!
/sarcasm.
@harbingerofdoom
*agrees*
People get so butt hurt over Apple news here yet no other news generates more hits or views for Engadget.
@(Unverified) what the F**k?
"iPhone2,1 was originally spotted in October 2008 and later became the iPhone 3GS about eight months later."
Yup, that pretty much sums up iPhone development...
Just because Gizmodo gets its panties wet every time Steve Jobs has a thought doesn't mean other sites cannot post unbiased, up-to-the-minute, news.
@(Unverified) You made the mess dude, you clean it up. Your mother doesn't work here.
Aaaaaw DAMN! Now this is what I'm talking about:
http://wp.appadvice.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/iphone4g_1.jpg
A slimmer, turbo-charged, dual core, HTC HD2 doppelganger with added front facing camera?
and a pic of Derek Jeter showing off its video iChat prowest? Just, wow!
PS The question is does A or V get it first? Well, we shal see...

Well, if the next gen iPhone has video conferencing, they better not release it on AT&T. Good luck with that one if they do, LOL! It's bad enough now with the 3GS clogging up AT&T's slow and limited coverage 3G network with standard data usage, let alone real time video streaming \ conferencing. Oh and by the way, Fring already does two way video conferencing via Skype (wifi OR 3g) on Symbian, and they are going to add support for AIM and Yahoo & Google Talk as well.
Inb4 iTouch HD with OLED screen and Tegra processor.
this is why i havnt bought an iphone for 3 years.. im waiting for the next breaktrhu ;)
Damnit, and all this time I though SJ sat on a special throne and crapped it out day of launch like the queen in Alien.
@surgex Apple hasn't use an OMAP yet. What makes you think they'll start now?
@spin cycle
I said either OMAP4 or something similar...with CorTex A9 IP core.
Maybe they'll use the new Samsung Hummingbird SoC but I doubt it since it's still A8. OMAP4 looks very impressive to me :).
@(Unverified)
just wipe your mouth
Oh. My. God. This could mean Apple is making a newer version of the iPhone!!
Like c'mon we dont even have to speculate that Apple is making/testing a newer version of the 3GS, it's almost implied.. I dont need 3,1 to tell me its coming.
(and if you couldn't tell, the first bit was sarcasm)
@werty1432k
You're. Goddamn. Hilarious. This could mean you're the first person to make a sarcastic comment on this post!!
(and if YOU couldn't tell...)
@werty1432k Yeah man, explaining your own sarcasm is such an amateur move, it tells us you didn't even believe in your own joke.
@werty1432k Holy shit! You were being sarcastic?
@surgex lame device...
99% of iPhone owners happy with their smartphones, says ChangeWave Research
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9139984/iPhone_satisfaction_rating_on_a_different_planet_says_survey
...oh I'm sorry, you were saying something?
Had just asked someone if they wanted an iPhone for Christmas.
Now they've done an Osborne Computer.
Anyone cautious/sensible will hold out.
@HighestRanked
That's great...I could really care less what joe blow average user who most likely doesn't even know what 3G means (or stands for) thinks about his shiny trendy crippled device. If he's happy running one application at a time, good for him. I'm not, and I never will be.
In my opinion, it is not right to call a device that can only run one application at a time a smartphone. It's a dumbphone or featurephone.
Anyways, back to my original comment (which by the way your response had nothing to do with!) -- hopefully with the advancements made by the OMAP4 (and similar processors utilizing a CorTex A9 IP Core), Apple will allow for multitasking on their next generation iPhone. There's really no reason not to...they are supposed to consume less power and be even faster.
Its just a mirror, dont be fooled.
@MANTISxB There's a mirror app you can download for the iPhone, works really well...
Maybe it's the rumored 8g3GS
It's the iTouch with a camera, just that they haven't edited the firmware name yet??
The new iPhone will be different, trust me...
No one's going to see this thing, since its hard to tell the difference between the original, a 3G and a 3GS as it is. Talk about a hidden-in-plain sight prototype!
I can't wait for this!!! I'm ready to upgrade from my old iPhone to this new one.
This has been expected from Apple, as we sort of know the drill, the iPhone OS 4.0 will be previewed in March/April so developers will have time to develop with the new APIs and whatnot, while the hardware will be in WWDC '10 in the summer...
Seeing that Apple might not want to release both the 4th generation iPhone and the long rumoured tablet device, the latter might come earlier than the iPhone, maybe during the special event to release the OS 4.0 SDK as a "one more thing", who knows?
Maybe it will coincide with AT&T's exclusivity running out. ;-)
We can always hope!
@surgex
So addressing how you called iPhones "lame devices" has nothing to do with your comment? No... it's right there... you said it - so it does have something to do with your comment.
Stay hating. For every "joe blow average user who most likely doesn't even know what 3G means...happy running one application at a time," there's some faux-techy geek who actually thinks they're pushing the limits by avoiding the iPhone platform, listening to Pandora while checking their Facebook page (I hope your network supports simultaneous data/voice though)... The mighty multi-task! If you honestly think the iPhone only does one thing at a time, you're one of the few who's never used one. Apple limits third-party multitasking, that's the problem people want changed. The device can handle it easily. Battery? Not so much.
All those processors you mention could be promising, but it's widely known that Apple acquired a company specifically capable of creating unique chipsets for the iPhone/iPod, so I'd speculate it's likely going to be one of those new chips powering this newest iPhone and maybe even the rumored tablet.
By the way, this naming convention about what phone is 'smart' or not: the multiple SE "smartphones" I owned were handily "outsmarted" the day the iPhone came out, so it sounds like you're just upset about Apple or iPhones or something. That issue is yours - the iPhone is a "smartphone" by general consensus.
I hope this is worth the wait... I'm holding out from getting either a 3GS or HD2 to replace my 3G in hopes that this is something really spectacular... Which it should be...
I'll probably upgrade to this one when it comes out, whatever it is.
Although quite funny, I'm getting a little bored of people asking if my iPhone is special and new because it's made of metal, not black or white plastic!
I can't wait to jailbreak it.

I don't use facebook or pandora. Nice assumptions though!
"Apple limits third-party multitasking, that's the problem people want changed. The device can handle it easily. Battery? Not so much."
That's funny. The N900 can handle over 30 applications running at one time (yes, what you call "3rd party applications" -- stupid nitpicking) and I don't see anyone complaining about the battery life. And call me a hater if you want, fanboi -- I will always be there to hate when manufacturers place stupid restrictions on devices, and have closed development, and then take people to court and try to make it illegal to modify the device that YOU own.
@(Unverified)
Don't be even more stupid than you already are. In what way has Apple made it ILLEGAL to modify it? Is it ILLEGAL to jailbreak an iPhone? No, so kindly STFU.
Also running 30 apps at once and you don't think that impacts battery life? Are you an idiot? I mean let's not even discuss what running 30 apps at once will do to the speed of the phone, it's not like it has multiple GBs of RAM.
Your whole attitude about what constitutes a smartphone is pathetic and stupid. It does more than most phones out there, so does that mean there are really only maybe 2 or 3 phones that are worthy of being a smartphone? Even though the iPhone is still a better phone than the G1, the N900, the Pre and Droid? It's funny how the definition of "smartphone" keeps changing as the iPhone gets better, and how your excuses for why it's not a smartphone get dumber and dumber.
@Jack
Wah wah wah fanboi cry.
eff.org/deeplinks/2009/02/apple-says-jailbreaking-illegal
@(Unverified)
So no response to me pointing out how completely stupid your other comments were, huh? Typical. And why does it not surprise me that you aren't smart enough to understand the difference between Apple trying to say that jailbreaking is illegal, and jailbreaking actually BEING illegal?
Did you even bother to read that link? I'm guessing not, because facts are for suckers, amirite? Yeah. You want to try again or are you done now? And please, continue to ignore the points I made in my previous post. It's nice to know that you have no response to them.
@Jack
Did you read my original comment?
I said "and then take people to court and try to make it illegal to modify the device that YOU own." Notice the word TRY? You're an ignorant fanboy and I am done with your zealotry. Go worship your false god.
This makes me wonder, since this is a new prototype iPhone, probably coming out in the summer, and the tablet is rumored to come out Q1 2010 or Q2 then why hasn't the prototype tablet registered on any dev's registry? Because it's gonna run snow leopard!!!! Woop!
No, I have nothing to back this up, but you should see the new iPhone out around March.
