WowWee Cinemin Swivel iPod and iPhone pico projector review

The first time we saw a pico projector some of us thought: "Err... What's the point?" Slide show presentations from your phone? Doubt it -- not powerful enough for practical use. Cinematic experience in the toilet? Maybe, but you'd want a built-in projector on your PMP instead of a separate brick. Funky dance? Only in Japan. Finally, WowWee took a break from robotics to give us the answer with its foldable Cinemin Swivel pico projector: for watching videos on the ceiling while lying in bed, obviously. Still, we have our doubts about image quality, portability and practicality -- especially for $299. Read on to find out if this little guy is worth it.

In battery mode we managed to squeeze out about 90 minutes' worth of juice, much less than the claimed 135 minutes on a 1700mAh cell -- but most users would use an external power source for prolonged use anyway. Other features on this six-ounce device include a handy rear-projection switch, a focus dial and a built-in sucky mono speaker (with volume buttons) compensated by a headphone jack. There's of course the 90-degree hinge for steady vertical projection -- much easier than using a mini tripod as required by other pico projectors -- and we found it to be a godsend for lazy nights on our bed. The only problem was we had to make do with a slight picture offset as the projector wasn't right in front of us, nor could we tilt it and then adjust the keystone. We wouldn't suggest placing the projector on your chest either, as the lens section can get quite warm -- a trade-off for not having a noisy fan.

Wrap-up
We're rather surprised by the Cinemin Swivel -- good picture quality, vibrant colors, quick warm-up and easy operation. There's no doubt this makes a great toy for personal leisure use, but with it's current technical limitations its not good for more than a little fun. Ideally, we'd like VGA resolution and greater brightness for presentation purposes, and it'd be nice if WowWee included the $40 Cinemin Swap VGA-to-AV converter as part of the $299 tag, but those are just minor complaints -- and iPod and iPhone owners can always keep an eye out for discounts. Or just buy a monitor.

They should manufacture it for Zune HD as well for obvious reasons.
I wouldn't buy one, but it seems pretty neat for what it is.
Very nifty.. Ill look forward to the day when these arn't too expensive/ have more usable specs..
Until then itl be the trusty monitor!
this is lame all those wires just scream "junk"
I use to use a couple of projectors around the home a few years back. The biggest reason I moved away from them and in a different direction was the cost of bulb replacement. What can we expect from the lamps on units like these? How many lumens are they? Does anyone know what the resolution of this guy is? Finally, I'm digging the folding design but wondering just how loud this runs because the ideal location for a bedroom application would be right above our heads on the headboard.
@DaveBach I'm pretty sure the review addresses three of your four questions at least.
@DaveBach As I understand it, this uses an LED lamp. I have an LED projector and it's pretty dim, but the bulbs should last between 30,000-50,000 hours (non-replaceable, but 30,000 hours is quite a while.) and they're much cooler, so there's almost no noise from a cooling fan.
Engadget's dismissive comments strike me as a symptom of a lack of imagination. On the road with friends this could really make things interesting.
and I wonder how these compare to laser based devices like the microvision.
Brilliant, Perfect gift for my iPhone 3gs this Christmas. Only bad thing, When is it coming to the UK?
@PATRICKmcnicholl My fellow UK citizen, it's already out here: http://www.google.co.uk/products?hl=en&safe=off&q=cinemin+swivel
Yes! wait....£299? Isn't it $299 in america? it should be about £180 here. :D. But still, I want some projecting goodness
Clearly, it was designed for porn. When your Mom walks in, you can just turn it off and she'll be none the wiser.
@(Unverified) But you can just turn anything off, surely?
@Richard Lai
you turn everything off ;)
@(Unverified)
Your mom??
So what good is the tilt if you can't adjust Keystone?
Oh to have such free time again...
i want to set up one at work and have one beaming down on the counter. customers walk in and they're like oh that's weird it sounds like star wars. Where's the video? lol. it's on the counter bitch, but only i can see it, cause it's got 1000:1 contrast ratio and it's playing in my mind!!
Very tantilizing.... but thinking this through, lets see ... the battery lasts 90 minutes, just short of an average movie (Peter Jackson works nothwithstanding). Its a travel unit, but I'm gonna have to carry the AC adapter (heck what's one more). That begs the question ... whats bigger, the projector or the power brick... photo please ???
@TikiScott It's in the video. It's just a regular USB cable for power anyway.
The one thing this review doesn't tell you is that with any iPhone projector, it only works for videos. Don't expect to surf Safari or use any other apps with this.
@loganjw Point taken, but that would be daft anyway -- you want to be touching the GUI, not duplicating the display or even guessing where you're touching.
I'm not understanding fully...you mean I wouldn't be able to just go up and touch the wall or ceiling to make selections? Does that mean I wouldn't be able to make multi-finger gestures on the wall either? When I was in elementary school I use to make gestures on the classroom wall all the time with the projector.
@loganjw
however for us jailbroken users, we can do all of this and more :)
personally I would rather use my psp and xbox for this.
go get the EyeClops Projector from Target or wherever... it's $90 and does the same thing... only it can run on batteries and has a better projection distance, but at a tad dimmer rate... I use my PS3+Netflix to project an 8 foot screen on the wall or ceiling, you'll be impressed what it can do... and it'll save you $210 !! why do kids get all the cool things? can't wait for a HD Eyeclops Projector to come out... hint hint..
I sleep on my side, pwnd I guess.
Isn't that the great Philippe Starck on the video? What a legend! I'd buy one of these even if only because it displayed him, though would love to see what his take on the design was!
Devices like this make me realize how far mobile power technology hasn't come...
I'll buy something like this when the battery lasts 24 hours straight and I can project it from more than an arms length away.
I could definitely see an HD version of this thing being a big hit in the DIY multitouch community. That combined with a cheap wide-angle webcam and some infrared illumination == optical multitouch at a cheaper price and in a smaller footprint than ever before possible.
Whoever said the Eyeclops must be joking. I've owned more pico / micro / pocket projectors than anyone I know. The Eyeclops is a joke (seriously). It's not worth $20. The Wowee I've never tried but seeing how it is very similar in specs to the Optoma PK101 I'm going to say the Swivel is useless beyond a childs toy. Heck I've owned the 3M PK101, AAXA P1, Ray R5 and they were all basically children's toys. Anything with 8-15 lumens in my opinion is worthless. The only micro projectors that I have found some use for is the AAXA P2 pico projector (33 lumens 800x600 resolution) and the Dell M109 pocket projector (50 lumens 800x600 resolution). Basically only something above 30 lumens is usable if you're actually looking to do something with it....
I recommend the AAXA P2 since it's battery powered like the swivel, although it only lasts about 60 min.
