Engadget's Holiday Gift Guide: Docks and Alarm Clocks
Welcome to the Engadget Holiday Gift Guide! The team here is well aware of the heartbreaking difficulties of the seasonal shopping experience, and we want to help you sort through the trash and come up with the treasures this year. Below is today's bevy of hand curated picks, and you can head back to the Gift Guide hub to see the rest of the product guides as they're added throughout the holiday season.
The portable media player is one gadget that's achieved across the board, almost universal acceptance. People of all ages and demographics have grown to rely on handhelds for their tunes and videos -- whether on-the-go or in-the-home. Although a majority of the docks and alarm clocks we come across have the iPod or iPhone in mind, we've found a selection of items that cater to all sorts of devices (and all sorts of budgets).
Motorola Droid Multimedia Station - Let's kick things off with a little something for the Motorola fan in your life. If he or she has a Droid, there is no excuse for not having the multimedia dock as well. This guy acts as a desktop charger, and when the phone is set in the cradle a couple of well-placed magnets tell it to enter landscape "multimedia" mode -- displaying a clock face, photos, movies, music, weather and what have you. It also syncs your media to your PC with the included USB cable.

Microsoft Zune HD AV Dock - If your significant other's Zune HD has been relegated to trips on mass transit, they're missing out. The Zune HD AV Dock features HDMI and AV outs, a wireless remote, AC adapter, and all the appropriate cables -- everything needed, in fact, to load the device up with media, for enjoyment on the TV or stereo system. Compatible with Zune HD, Zune 120, Zune 80, Zune 16, Zune 8, and Zune 4.

Stocking stuffer

SendStation PocketDock Line Out Mini USB - The perfect compliment to your loved one's / fellow raver's portable media player, the PocketDock is just a little larger than a penny -- but all the more useful. This bad boy connects to your iPod via the docking port and gives you a mini USB port for charging and a 3.5mm line out for connecting to your stereo. The product literature boasts "crystal clear, pristine audio quality," and while we'll take that claim with a grain of salt, there is no denying that this could prove quite useful, in the impromptu "let's have a party / who's got the tunes?" sense. Just the thing to shake off those post-holiday blues!

Oh, you shouldn't have

Sony ICF-CL75iP alarm clock / digital frame / iPod dock - The first dock / alarm clock to turn our heads in a long time, this guy features a retractable dock for your iPod or iPhone, a 7-inch WVGA LCD screen that does double duty as both a digiframe and an alarm clock, 1GB storage, an AM/FM radio, USB for dragging and dropping files from your PC, and bare bones codec support (including MP3, MP4, WMA, M-JPEG, and AVI).

Ion Audio Tailgater - Sure, we've seen some polite, petite, and convenient docks thus far -- but nothing bad-ass enough for that heavy metal roadie in your life. The Tailgater features 16 watts of audio output, docks with most iPod models, and contains a plethora of audio inputs for microphones and other audio sources. And it's not tied down to a power source, either -- the included battery promises up to 8 hours of entertainment, no matter which unsavory setting it might find itself in.

Philips HF3490 Wake-up Light - Light alarms are certainly less abrasive than the foghorns that pass for more traditional alarm clocks, and iPod playslists are certainly less annoying than the FM morning "Zoo Crew." The HF3490 features four nature sounds (birds chirping and the like), thirty levels of brightness, a "dusk simulator," an FM tuner, and a future-retro vibe that any of your droogs is sure to love.

We can't afford the rent now, can we?

iHome iP1 - Packing a 100 watt amp, two 4-inch woofers and two 1-inch tweeters, the big news here is that the iHome iP1 features Bongiovi Digital Power Station processing, a technology generally used to improve sound quality in car stereos, low-quality speakers and other audio hardware. And some just might think this thing is pretty good looking, in a sort of futuristic boom box sort of way. The included remote can handle custom EQ in addition to switching DPS on and off, and there's also component video out and full iPhone support.

Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Mini - The fun lovin' little brother to the B&W Zeppelin, the Zeppelin Mini features 36 total watts of power with a pair of 3-inch full range drivers, an iPod dock, USB connectivity for direct audio streaming from your Mac or PC, a 3.5mm auxiliary input for just about any sound source you can name, and a bundled remote. And this guy has a pretty decent pedigree -- B&W has been a big name in studio reference monitors and hi-fi speakers for as long as we can remember. Of course, this kind of quality isn't cheap -- but you knew that coming in, right?

Bose SoundDock 10 Digital Music System - With enough volume to fill a big room, the SoundDock 10 sounds "large," which is more than fitting as it weighs 19 pounds and measure 10-inches deep. Featuring that much-lauded Bose Waveguide speaker technology, a 3.5mm aux in, and composite video out, this is definitely not the device for kids on a budget -- but the hefty price tag does get you the option of swapping out the standard iPod input for a $149 A2DP Bluetooth receiver, and the company has mentioned that docks supporting other audio players may be forthcoming, depending on market demand.

No Chumby? Multitude of Ipod docks? Can it be?
Yes, and just because the pictures show them with iPods, that doesn't mean they couldn't work with another pmp
@EyeZer0 It's still sad to see that the title is Docks and Alarms Clocks and there are no stand alone alarm clocks up there like the Chumby or any others. This list should have just been titled Docks with Alarm Clocks.
@EyeZer0 I was saddened by the lack of Chumby as well. (Though I did get one for my gf for christmas!)
@EyeZer0 well, there's _one_ device there that can function as a stand-alone alarm clock...
@EyeZer0 yeah...totally expecting the chumby to be at the top of this list. i bought it for myself 3 weeks ago and told my wife she was pretty much done with my christmas shopping (hopefully i dropped enough hints about that motherboard i want).
I still think the original B&W Zeppelin was the awesomest dock ever
@PATRICKmcnicholl
yes, 'awesomest' indeed :)
@Thiran you mean 'funnest' right?
That Sony alarm clock would be perfect if it had some sort of weather aggregation through wireless or something.
Anyone with the Droid dock happy/unhappy/feeling ripped off/feeling they got a great value?
@yulebellow
I'm happy with it!
Then again, I'm the guy that HAS to have a dock for everything (so this satisfies that), but it's very slick. I use it as my bedside alarm clock.
The interface that pops open is pretty slick too. Until recently, when someone released an app that activates it, you couldn't even access the multimedia dock interface without the dock.
Good luck finding the Motorola Droid Multimedia Station. It's sold out everywhere. Which is super frustrating!
@InformationDesk Look harder? I got one the other day from vzw online for 26$ overnight...
All this guide proved is that iPod users are suckers willing to pay any outrageous price for their accessories.
*I'm an iPod user so don't hate.
@Evan. If they are quality products, then yes, we do shell out for them. And why not? Quality is usually worth it. Look at the b&w Zeppelin. Pure awesomeness
What about car docks, has anyone been able to get the HTC HD2 car dock? I want one really bad....
The lack of Chumby (OG or One) is a huge oversight. I've had an OG for two years and it is truly the wired person's alarm clock.
You forgot The Smart Alarm, for the iPhone/iPod Touch, that wakes you earlier when there is bad weather - http://bit.ly/thsmrtalrm ;)
For a stocking stuffer that won't break the bank, I'd recommend the $5 GoGoStand iphone stand - http://gogostand.com
Seeing as how the Droid dock won't even be available until after Christmas, that's probably a crappy Christmas gift.
@(Unverified) I just bought a droid multimedia dock last night, shipped in the morning . I'm not sure how people are having such a hard time finding one ( not the first time I've heard this) . I just went on verizons page and searched cradles and about five items down was the dock . Hope that helps
I'd love to get the Droid dock but let's be honest: it's not available from ANY retailers or legitimate online sites. By legit, I mean the old standbyes that moms and girlfriends don't mind shopping from... Amazon, NewEgg, etc. I wouldn't want to tell my mom to go on "DroidPhanBoi.geocities.com" to have to buy this... and then pray it actually makes it in time and she doesn't get scammed.

Is Verizon legit enough for you?
@(Unverified) I got one via phone from my local VZW store last week. Just called them and they had it overnighted from their warehouse.
@Brazell
Well fellers, you're entirely correct! As of Monday this was not available... but today it is, happy day! I just purchased one for myself, thanks for the tip!
My review on Sony's ICF-CL75iP
What's great about it: 7" digital video and picture frame
What's not so great: No WiFi, iPod dock feels cheap and loose, no remote, settings
"I was extremely excited to receive this alarm dock. It was so promising with everything it could offer. I knew it would be missing thing like WiFi but though maybe the second generation would include it. The clock was easy to set up. Multiple alarms are a huge plus. The video was fine as well as adding all the picture I wanted. Having multiple ways of input is a really nice touch. Once everything was set and configured was when I began being disappointed.
There are multiple ways for your display to look, but after your alarm goes off, the display reverts back to it standard setting and there is no way for it to remain how you want it to look unless you again reconfigure it. The standard display setting is not my favorite. It has the picture you choose with the time right across it making it look like a mess. At night the display can be quite bright. When you dim it to the lowest of the 3 settings the clock is near invisible making it useless. Also if you dim the display to it's lowest setting the clock seems to shut it's self off completely. I've been late to work twice now due to this. (it could be just mine however)
The fact that there is no remote is mind boggling. Even Sony's simple alarm docks have a remote. Often times when waking up I like to listen to talk radio to get my news. We all know how annoying the commercials on the radio can be, but without a remote or even mute button we are forced to listen unless you get up manually turn off the radio or change stations.
This was a good attempt at what it could be. And for early adopters you usually know what you are getting; but there are just too many issues at this point to justify owning one at it's current price. It might be better suited for a den or kitchen, just not your bedroom."
Would you recommend this product to a friend?: No
The Chumby should be on here!!!
LONG LIVE CHUMBY
you really should call this guide "Engadget's Holiday Gift Guide: iPod and iPhone Docks and Alarm Clocks"

Aside from an iHome model that's two years old and looks like an Xbox with a no-so-discreet-on-the-nightstand-now-is-it? black speaker grille, Zunes don't get any clock-docking love. Why is that? I would love a tiny little alarm clock with an elegant brushed metal design that doesn't cheapen my platinum HD. Oh, and the HD can't do snooze on the iHome model until they get around to an update. Blecch.
What about a Zune HD dock with speakers? Will any of the 1-3 gen Zune docks work? I know its the same connection.
I don't understand the point behind the SendStation PocketDock. You can line out through the already included headphone jack, and a mini USB plug would have a regular USB on the other side, just like the normal iPod connector.
This accessory should have been denied for potential customer confusion.
@Martin C Well, you could use it for something like in your car. You need to charge your iPod and also want an Aux out to your AUX input on your car stereo. So you use a PocketDock. You can buy the multi-headed cable from Apple with the video out and everything, but when you plug it in it shuts off the video on your iPod. And of course its expensive and has the wrong connectors etc. Apple doesn't sell an audio only one. You want the AUX connector instead of plugging into the headphone jack for a couple of reasons--one you want line level output (volume control is on your car stereo), and two you want only one cable to plug in...
@Martin C Oh, and if you have the lineout plugged in through the dock, when you turn off your car, the iPod will pause automatically, which it won't do if you are driving the audio out the headphone jack...
p.s. Doesn't work with iPhone though. Stupid.
How about a decent selection of alarm clocks that accept memory cards?
I don't have an iPod, and don't want to buy one. It would be nice to move beyond the Clock Radio / CD player.
Dear Apple Dock Community,
See that Droid Multimedia Dock? I want one for the iPod/iPhone. No, I don't want a clock AND a dock, I just want the dock. And yes I want to put the phone sideways so the screen is bigger. I know this is inconvenient given the dock is on the bottom, but figure it out. I will buy it from whoever makes it first.
16 watts of power is pretty knarly
where's Chumby. The one looks like a must if you don't have a Chumby already
The wife and I both use the docks for thr Droid and love them. She uses hers at work to charge while she listens to Pandora on the phone. I use mine at home for an alarm clock. Probably going to order two more. One for my work, and one for her nightstand. They are just so convenient. Wish they could be set to display a flickr stream like a screensaver after a while though. The hires screen would make an awesome digital picture frame. This was actually written on my Droid too!
does anyone know the name of the iphone case shown with the sendstation pocket dock??
How bout more variety and less iPhone/iPod?
Nothing for a blackberry?
You can do so much better for $600 than a Bose...
@rjc34
Amen... I wonder how much Bose payed to be in this gift guide?? Probably less than they pay to have people endorse it for their mag ads...
Jeez give me a stereo miniplug to RCA cable from the 99¢ store and be done with it.
Too bad the SONY doesn't have a weather or RSS widget...
