Looks like
Dell isn't the only one who knows how to produce
an ultrathin laptop, as LG's latest concoction has just landed at the always-revealed database of the FCC. The XNote LGX30 (not to be confused with the
Ion-based X30) is an 11.6-inch netbook with a 1,366 x 768 resolution panel, solid state drive, integrated webcam, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, a multicard reader, GMA500 graphics set and a 3-cell battery. The machine weighs just 1.74 pounds and is based on some sort of Atom CPU, and as expected, it's Windows 7 running the show. We're hoping to hear a lot more about this thing when CES rolls around, but till then, feel free to peruse the user guide down there in the source link. It's a riveting read, we tell ya.
since when do LG make laptops? seriously, when did this happen??
@glenskey when you were chosing your creepy avatar
@Bublik25 Touche
@glenskey There’s probably a strong possibility that this laptop will make a happy appearance at CES 2010. http://bit.ly/lgxnote-point-of-view
LG have made laptops for years now.
The LG P310 is probably the standout though.
@Blahman And they make 'em good. The P310 can be compared with a XPS 13 , if speced nicely.
yawn
GMA 500 = Atom Zxx (no pinetrail here)
Probably Z530.
Sorry but I don't get what's show-stopper about this? Some last-gen Atom + GMA500 + 3 cell battery isn't exciting in the slightest - it looks nice though - I guess the super-low weight means a lot to some people, but all of these laptops and phones getting lighter and lighter, you go to places like Mac Forums and all you read is that suddenly 1KG is really heavy... it's like introducing the Mac Air (which I do like) suddenly made a whole generation weak beyond belief.
If this trend goes on, people will be complaining about how hard it is to lug any laptop around thats more than 200g or more than 1cm thick.
@jk6959 let me guess: your definition of a laptop is something that you can move from the desk to the couch and not much further?
It's really beyond me what's not to like about a slight trend towards generally lighter laptops. Nobody stops you from adding some lead blocks if you like your laptop heavier...
@NewL My laptop is ~1-1.5kg I'm not sure. It's a CULV and can do anything my old Pentium D desktop could do and more. So yes - I appreciate lightness & thinness in a laptop, but after a certain point sacrificing that much performance so it can fit in a handbag is beyond me. My my point of the rant is generally that its too much of a utility sacrifice purely for a little weight/size loss considering current CULVs/Netbooks/Smartbooks can offer a far better experience, probably a far better price, definately a far better battery life without compromising too much on weight - I don't understand where only laptops under 800grams could be taken around by everyone - how on earth can you do the weekly shopping if anything >1kg suddenly makes it infeasible to take around with you.
So yes - my laptop is probably 1.5-2x the weight and a little larger - but I can do anything on it and travel across the country and use it in buses / trains with 5-8 hours of usage, while this laptop will barely survive 2-4 hours doing nothing for the sake of being a beautiful concept (prefere looks to Adamo XPS or its Vostro equivalent).
Obviously there's a market for this somewhere, but with Dell's Vostro equivalent of the Adamo XPS probably ~1/2 the price of whatever LG puts on this is there any reason to get this other than burning cash purely for aesthetics?
@jk6959 Ha you have a handbag
@jk6959
Ever heard the term,"Ounces equals pounds, pounds equal pain?" Live it, learn it, love it... well at least understand it....
@vinhchenzo nope never heard of that saying. Just heard 'lift with your back' and losing 33-50% of the weight at the cost of 75-99% of the performance and an increase of probably 50-100% in price just doesn't add up to me.
Furthermore I don't have a handbag - but I do have a manbag, and my 13" CULV 1.5kg laptop will look fat next to this. But when more and more laptops like this come out you have people complaining that 1kg laptops are now incredibly heavy and the 200gms they've cut off have made a world of difference. So if you think anything >1kg is unportable for just using on the couch / desk then how on earth do you drag any goods / food / drinks / etc around with you? Based on that ever carrying anything over 2 pints would equal a world of pain...
@jk6959
is it anything like the satchel indiana jones wears?
1.76 pound: awesome. 3 cell battery: not so much...
Seems like this is LG's Vaio X - hopefully without the completely ridiculous price tag of Sony's version.
Looking forward to more details of this one.
1.74 lbs = 789 g
Perfect! This thing is in potential competition with VAIO X!
I wonder if the CPU is the more powerful Atom Z550.
@microshaftsux
789 grams with a 11.6-inch screen is very impressive
^^ Are they the same people?
You lost me at Atom.
the good news is that everything is easily upgradeable, including swapping the SSD with a normal hd http://newnetbookreviews.net/2009/super-thin-and-light-lg-x30-spotted-in-fcc-filings/
@mikez52
It still says "might" be easily upgradeable.
