Android 2.1 ported to Droid, no one feigns surprise
You had to know this was coming. That Android 2.1 OS that's been circulating inside the Google's ultra-exclusive Nexus One has hit the internet, and thanks to some clever hackery, you can now theoretically put the update on your Droid handset. We say theoretically, of course, because it's not quite a perfect rip. DIY instructions were briefly posted on Sholes.info but have since been replaced with a curt advisory to wait for a ROM that properly preserves file system permissions, else risking some serious breaking. The original image file is still available, but don't say we didn't warn you. Separately and perhaps unrelated, a video has surfaced of the Nexus One's boot animation running on Droid -- feel free to enjoy that instead, after the break. [Thanks, Seth and Kyle]

Um, sorry to rain on your parade but 2.1 hasn't been ported to the Droid. However, you can get the boot screen, sounds, etc.
Almost forgot, there's a link to the files in this post http://www.androidcentral.com/android-21-flan-ripped-apart-boot-animation-wallpapers-ringtones-available
@CJ100570 Yes. It has.
@CJ100570 Then wtf is that img for?
I don't quite get what's so awesome about the Google Nexus One. Okay it's the "Google Phone," but look even the Droid has its software now. Honestly, I don't think there will ever be just a "Google Phone," any android phone can have it's features and might even be cheaper. I applaud Google for having a solid mobile OS, but this hype over the Google Phone is misleading. I don't see anything iconic about the Nexus One, it looks like any other Andoird HTC phone (which all look really solid).
@SDreamer
I think what people are getting excited about is that there is finally an Android phone with specs worth lusting over (approximately equal specs to the HTC HD2), and the fact that it comes with Android 2.1 and may sell unlocked for a low price doesn't hurt either.
However, I generally agree that the hype is overblown. But that's fanboyism, what are you gonna do?
So really Droid and Nexus are in the same boat. Multitouch-less until someone roots it into a ROM.

Wave stream creates 'X' of neXt 'W'eb
@newtape
really? NeXt? You went there? The basis for Mac OS X, which was later the basis of OS X iPhone?
Guys, I MUST know... what the hell is the X for?
@Wesscoast
it's for neXus phone, duh.
@Wesscoast X marks the spot! obviously..
awesome...
Is it just me or does that whole boot animation remind you of the new Windows boot animation?
anyone notice the HQ in Youtube bar instead of HD
@Abdel
It stands for High Quality.. Duh!
@Abdel so you didn't notice that the same icons also show up on Youtube's actual page, depending on whether the video has an HD version or not?
Ok... now bring it to the Eris please!
@Gaucho85
lmfao don't think that'll happen.... Atleast not anytime soon. There's a huge power difference between the Droid's CPU and the Eris'
I have a feeling it would grind to a halt on something like the Eris or G1(same CPU between the 2) with all those 3D effects and animated backgrounds.
@chaoscentral as if you have specs to tell us that isn't true of the Droid vs. Nexus
HOT
i'm gonna judge a book by it's cover for a minute and say that if the rest of the UI looks like that lock screen there, it needs some heavy work.
great, but i would like that to be official
when will verizon give this to usss
@raaaaaa Um.......half past never!
Bravo, on the way, stay tuned!
I got no iPhone: http://parrygripp.com/week012009.html
So if 2.1 is going to be available on the droid, what makes the nexus one any more 'google phone' than all of the other android phones? The fact that your going to have to get it expensive unlocked through an online retailer? They're never going to sell to the consumer market unlocked. Theres a reason when an american hears nokia they think, dumbphone.
Very interesting. I have read that some people have already "bricked" their phones when trying to upgrade.
