Exclusive: first Google Phone / Nexus One photos, Android 2.1 on-board
Well here you have it folks, honest-to-goodness pics of the Google Phone... AKA, the Nexus One. As you can see by the photos, the design of the device is largely similar to those we've seen, but the graphic on back is slightly different, and that piece of tape is covering a QR code (how very Google of them). Just like we've heard before, the updated OS features new 3D elements to the app tray, as well as an extended amount of homescreens, though it looks like the lock screen / mute is the same as in Android 2.0.1. Additionally, there's now a new grid icon at the bottom of the homescreen, which when pressed brings up a webOS card-style preview of all homescreen pages -- which raises some interesting possibilities. Apparently there's been a new software update for the device pushed tonight, and sure enough the phone is identified as the Nexus One on the system info page. Quite clearly this device is running on T-Mobile, and is also using WiFi, so there's two other questions you've got answers to. The phone also appears to come loaded up with Google Navigation (a bit of a no-brainer) and the brand-spanking-new Google Goggles. Hardware wise, the Nexus does look incredibly thin and sleek, and while there's not a slew of buttons (those four up front are clearly touch sensitive), there is a dedicated volume rocker along the side. Oh, and note this... no HTC logo anywhere to be found. We'll update the post as / if we get more info, but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery below!
Update: One item of interest. In the packaging there's a quick start guide which points users to a "questions" page at google.com/phone/support. The page is a dead end right now, but it certainly gets an eyebrow raise from us. If there is a real Google Phone in the offing, that seems a likely landing page for support.
Update 2: In case you're interested, here's Android 2.1's boot animation for Nexus One. Eerily familiar, no?
[Thanks, RD]

HOLY@#$%
@yulebellow
Definitely - but is that really a trackball at the bottom (if so, why with such a big screen?)
@yulebellow
It really doesn't look like a trackball to me. Microphone maybe?
@Abe
more like a mini mouse pad.
@yulebellow i seccond that its amazing just if it came in a cdma version because sprint needs this phone my hero will be envious
@PeteC Looks like something akin to a 'home' button to me.
*Looks on his droid for the grid button"
I wants!
@yulebellow My Droid got a little jealous there for a second...but then I remembered that Android google based apps don't recognize multi touch so (for things that require multitouch or a keyboard), so it has nothing to worry about. I'm just a lil pissed that I left T-mo for better service and an awesome phone, but at a much higher price....only for them to get an equally awesome phone! SMH
@Abe
It is obviously a trackball, looks identical to the one on my hero (except a bit bigger)
@kjones555
I don't understand how T-mobile is cheaper. VZw is $119 a month for 700 mins and unlimited data for the family plan. T-mobile is exactly the same price for 750 mins and unlimited data for the family plan. I'll dump the extra 50 mins for a service I can use everywhere.
@kjones555
You do know that Anything with Android 2.0 has the ability for multitouch.
And the Droid has no multitouch active right now. The Milestone does though.
So really Droid and Nexus are in the same boat. Multitouch-less until someone roots it into a ROM.
But me, myself. I have a rooted phone...and I don't even use multitouch...so I know next phone I get will not get rooted. No need for it.
@kjones555 Some Android phones and apps do support multitouch.. just not in the US.. The Moto Milestone/Sholes has multitouch support enabled.
@(Unverified) That is $119 plus $29 for each smart phone. Yes, verizon says unlimited data but you still need to purchase a smart phone plan for each BB/Android/WinMob device.
@kjones555 I did the same thing G1 -> Droid ..... :( Now I want to go back! lol
@yulebellow
HOLY @#$% indeed. This is my next phone likely, unless the HD2 comes out sooner. I realize they are they same hardware but HD2 has a larger screen and id just flash android onto it. However if i got this phone id like to see sense put on it because it makes the experience so much nicer. Im very impressed with google and HTC at the moment, though.
@ljvb Hero says hi.
@0to60 Too bad you can't just "flash android on it".
@ljvb The Droid Eris supports multitouch in the states.
@ljvb The Hero and Eris both support multitouch in the US.
@kjones555 I did the same T_T and I paid an extra $200 to do so
@(Unverified) Not sure where you received your information on T-Mo service plans but I pay 102 and some change final bill. Tax and everything for complete unlimited service including minutes. I don't think there is a plan out there that can match that with fees and taxes included and I have service everywhere I go.
@(Unverified)
I pay $139.99 for two phones with unlimited talk, text, and web on T-Mobile...switched from Verizon to T-Mo because of that, and since I live in LA, no issues with signal whatsoever, and with the 7.2mbps upgrade coming out, faster 3G to boot...
@PeteC I think you meant to say: why isn't the screen bigger?
That's the htc bravo....I'm sure of it...16 gb storage, snapdragon processor...5mp camera...divx playback out the box...720p camcorder....ladies and gentlemen the nexus one aka tmobile g3
@kjones555
My Android based Milestone does multitouch just fine
I recently wrote a similar blog about this new Droid phone. You can view my blog at http://www.cellplaza.org/blog/1121/new-google-phone-unlocks-the-android/

@yulebellow http://www.theallybox.com/home
that's pretty hot
@joelv
Eh, it's not bad. I still prefer the HD2 hardware, especially with its super-slim bezel and hardware buttons. The best thing this has going for it is Android 2.1
@joelv
Chyeah! I can't decide what's cooler The phone or Android 2.1?
The bottom button's webOS-like function reminds me of expose on my mac. It'd be sad for Android to get that before the Apple's own mobile but... oh well. Better for us Android lovers. So psyched! Is it worth switching to T-mobile?
@ale
one more thing, though. Doesn't the speaker look a little high on this thing? Like, it's all the way at the top of the phone...
@tonicboy
I agree. Too much bezel on this Google Phone.
@joelv Am I the only one thinking that that's just a big fat ugly slob?
It's a real shame since I had high hopes for HTC Passions ever since its specs have been released...
@joelv It's good to see that the Nexus One a.ka Google phone had landed on T-Mobile rather than AT&T. One could say that there's still a lot of questions. The biggest is, "Will the Phone bring an uproar to its other competitive smartphones?" Google Phone reactions: http://bit.ly/nexus-one-hi-res-photos-detailed-specs
@joelv
It's not ugly. That's all I'm willing to say at this point.
In fact, I prefer the DROID's anti-iPhone looks over this.
The Nexus One is the best.

Do want.
i just wet myself. twice.
@soul3n
Your pants and your washing machine must have had a rough 2 days.
She's beautiful! If only it had a keyboard, it would be the G1 upgrade I've been longing for...
@B3astofthe3ast
I think that (assuming of course that we're not all dreaming) google and htc are making the right choice here going for a straight (let's face it) iPhone knock off. I think there are a lot of people, including myself, that have been waiting for a phone like this that runs android. Im a keyboard guy myself, but not a landscape keyboard guy. There are too many on the market already, I see this phone (again, assuming it is actually put up for sale) doing very very well in an at&t and iphone dominated world. Ive always said Id never force myself to rely on a touch keyboard, I like tactile feedback, but I would snap this up subsidized or not.
@Jono20 I'm just hoping HTC is smart and makes a true G1 successor, same form factor, but with snapdragon and more memory. Hopefully they realize that everyones G1 contract ends around october/november, and release a worthy update to my favorite phone ever.
@B3astofthe3ast
Yeah, come on Google, wheres the keyboard action.
holy crap i cannot wait
i hope this comes to Verizon as the Passion.
please please please google/verizon, be nice to us Engadgeters
@xxhonkeyxx i thought we were "EngadgeteErs". at least that's what i got engraved on my iphone
so is this running at 1GHz? i imagine the background looks cool when animated
@shu Yeah maybe, since it kinda looks boring unanimated?
@(Unverified)
The background wallpaper looks awful, so it must at least look good when animated.
@shu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEbW-fxzHtc&feature=player_embedded There it is...
