@groggit I don't believe that you people really take this post seriously! The officers in Israel airport needs to get permissions to shoot from about 2000 superior people before they even think to shoot something... This picture or the post itself are fake and the replies against Israel are ridiculous.
@zedster According to her blog, they told her to leave her bag (unattended or no).
"I went inside to check on my bag. I had left it unattended, where they instructed. It was still there so I went back outside."
Besides, if they really thought it was a bomb, would they really have shot at it? If video games have taught me anything it's that shooting at explosives is usually a bad idea.
@Hobsie No, luckily the hard drive is under the palm rest on the *right* side of this particular MacBook -- besides, she said in her blog post that she was able to recover the data.
Perhaps they suspected her from the start and just wanted to have a look at what she had. It is a bad idea to shoot something that might be a bomb, perhaps they booted it up? Or tried something else. Perhaps they thought it had important intel or something like that.
As much as I dislike macs (actually I don't mind the laptops) I feel kinda bad for her. They probably won't compensate anywhere close the the most likely 2,000 dollar price tag.
No the better question is how stupid where those police officers. Honestly who the "F" would shoot something if they thought it had explosives in it. Common sense would show that if you fire upon something that can go BOOOM it will go BOOM. What if the package was an explosive and the officer shot it and it exploded he better be responsible for that action.
@(Unverified) "P.S. - As always, we encourage a discussion. A sensitive, intellectual, worldly discussion. If you can't infer what it is we're asking of our dear readers tempted to intone on this matter, then please skip commenting on this thread, mkay? "
That was directed at you but apparently you didn't read it so I gave you another chance.
@Hobsie Well the HDD is on the other side actually. but they are killers heavily armed, no question. what happens is if you have a storage device, they either collect it or destroy it... the choice is yours (NOT?)
@wiregr Someone probably already said this but I'll say this again. when there is a suspicion for a bomb they send out the bomb robot which takes the bag carefully to the nearest "safety hole" (I don't know what it's called in english) drop it in there (it's a couple of meters deep) and if it didn't explode by now (hopefully), they either shoot it or blow it up w/ explosives.
here in Israel where the threat is very real we have once a year a police day at school where the police come and show us all their new toys :)
@ryguy222 hmm... you dislike macs? but like the majority product sold (the laptops). Then you price the machine at some outrageous price. $2000. which is almost $1000 more then what the thing costs. original unibody Macbook 13inch : $1100 (what this laptop looks to be) Macbook Pro 13in: $1200 Macbook Pro 15in: $1700 Macbook Pro 17in: $2499 unless she was walking around with a 17 inch macbook, then you are way off.
There is no context where the guards needed to shoot at the bag, apart from intimidation and provocation. (If it was for explosives they would have blown it up completely instead in a safe area.)
This is just an example of the type of situation occurs when you go into a police state with no regards to human rights.
@zedster DID YOU EVEN READ THE STORY???? She left her bag unattended WHERE and WHEN they told her too. If she had not, they would have SHOT HER TOO.... damn, you also blame the rape victim for her short skirt too don't you...
@Poobla Nope, just a high-quality Apple product. The bullets went through the screen but not through the keyboard... you can tell from the first picture.
@wiregr contrary to what you see in movies, most bomb squads aren't really looking to defuse a bomb. Unlike hollywood, nobody fucks around with whether to cut the red wire or the blue wire.
Basically the goal is a "controlled detonation," which basically means "make sure there are no people around and then shoot it from far enough that the explosion will not take lives". I imagine that a different doctrine is used when there's a greater suspicion that there's really A Bomb In There(tm) -- most times, the bomb squad is called in for some poor school kid's backpack.
This is such a non-story. Just a classic case of left hand/right hand not knowing what the other is doing. Some idiot officer told her to leave her bag unattended and another idiot officer came along and thought it was an unattended suitcase. All unattended bags get this kind of treatment in Israel. End of story.
please RTFA again, they ORDERED HER to leave the bag on the ground where it was and then pulled her away for further checking. She did not abandon the bag, she even checked up on it. A second guy then comes along and shoots the macbook and only then informs the first team.
@NYNY Two to the chest and one to the head. Standard operating procedure for a guaranteed kill. Just in this case they seemed unsure of the position of relative body parts... I assume it was stood on it's right side on the ground and they just let reflexes take over.
Still if they were trying to get rid of unwanted data, or a bomb disguised as a battery, they could well have missed the HD / battery bay if the Mac is built anything like my laptop. One sits under the left hand side of the keyboard towards the latch side, the other under the right...
So sharp80 questions the truthfullness of this story and he gets down-ranked into oblivion.... Interesting.... I guess there's no place for a dose of reality when everyone is frothing at the mouth about a story with no proof?
The whole line-up consists of the $60 Amps in-ears and $100 Tracks on-ear headphones, which both also come in slightly souped-up and pricier HD variations at $100 and $130, respectively.

Wow, I'd be pissed
@groggit
yeah, I would be too if a bunch of buffoons destroyed my laptop for no good reason.
@groggit Yep
@groggit

@groggit
This latest conflict in the Middle East has left 1300 Macs dead and 13 PCs killed.
Saayy, the trackpad really is made of glass!
@groggit
It only takes one shot to kill a laptop. This musta been some kinda super mutant bruit mac book pro.
@groggit
PC ftw
@groggit
if she left it unattended then she totally deserved it. How stupid can you get in an airport with a war going on. >?
@Poobla No it wasn't, this is a clear case of police brutality. 3 shots are excessive and just downright sick.
@NikAmi
Does this mean Macs are terrorists? :)
@groggit
I would cry! Can't help but notice they've managed to shoot the HD, RAM and CPU in 3 bullets? Trained Macbook Killer if u ask me!
@Poobla Macbooks are the new kevlar
@darjen
shooting holes in a mac is always a good reason?

@groggit This is what happens when you don't tell customs you are bringing fruit.
@wiregr

Nice grouping. But they did miss the bullseye, the Apple logo.
Let's see if this shows up on eBay...
@NikAmi
Sounds like things are seriously unbalanced in favor of the PCs.
@wiregr
Lol. So true :)
@t2af

@(Unverified)
Actually they either shoot it or use counter explosives so it blows up under a controlled environment.
@Schmerzlichtod That’s what I was thinking!
@groggit
What if you were the guy/girl shooting? Think of the fun! pissed? I think not.
Not sure why you cast yourself in the role of the dumb-ish girl.
If they were concerned it was explosive, it could have been. The lithium battery in there could have exploded in their face had they hit it.
@zedster
the first thing anyone told me when i went to Israel was:
If you leave your bag unattended IT WILL GET BLOWN UP!
it's very simply a different reality.
@groggit
They're speed holes! they make the computer go faster.
@sharp80
I'm guessing you're Israeli...

You win chief...you win.
@t2af
Thank God it wasn't a baby... cause is she left it for 30 seconds....
@T1dal
Maybe it's because Steve Jobs is half-Syrian?
@Hobsie Well the HDD is on the other side actually. but they are killers heavily armed, no question. what happens is if you have a storage device, they either collect it or destroy it... the choice is yours (NOT?)
@groggit
Well, it was coming right for them!!!
All I can say is, it's a good thing she wasn't bringing in kittens.
@wiregr

@ryguy222 Not if there were Palestinians near it then shooting at an explosive mac book might get you an achievement.
@T1dal ...only in Redmond
@NYNY it was probably one shot. From a shotgun, probably held by a robot.
@Poobla Nope, just a high-quality Apple product. The bullets went through the screen but not through the keyboard... you can tell from the first picture.
@groggit
"Its a bomb!"
"Quick! Shoot it before it explodes!"
@(Unverified)
Not who shot it, but what.
This is what : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PggGkVyLL-Q
And no, when you shoot explosives, it won't go off, but in any case, every police dep in the world has one of those robots.
Does this mean Macbooks are "literally" alive ?
Or is the headline just bad English ?
Again ?
