Nook 1.1 update hitting now

Some things we've noticed so far:
- Page updating on the E Ink display does seem to be a tiny bit faster. Nothing mindblowing, but a little bit better.
- B&N has fixed the page numbering issues. There is now a clear number and progress bar along the bottom of the screen.
- Overall the navigation and color screen loading times seem improved. The experience is definitely faster -- even scrolling through book covers seems a bit improved.
- There is still pausing and lag in the UI. This isn't a sea change, but it's clear they've cleaned some elements up.
Update: You can take a look at all the changes right here.

Nice of them to fix it before the bulk of new Nook owners who are waiting for their backorders can have a better experience than most of the reviewers for their device.
(and can we kill @creazy shopping who seems determine to spam every topic. I'm guessing it's a bot though who else would have the time?)
I want iPhone OS 4.0!
@werty1432k I want you....
....to shut up.
How often are people honestly using the LCD? All I use it for is to click read...
I don't waste time with their flawed marketplace. I like to read books washed onto shore from a Pirate's Bay while waiting for the little olive colored demon the get back into good health.
@rutter9
also, you don't have to reboot to update. You go to My Library, the click "Check for new B&N Content"
@rutter9
are TPB ebooks even worth getting? i looked at a couple and they were all in pdf files that were not formatted well and painful to read. i'd rather shell out the $10 for something i might be reading for 20 hours
@chill
Use calibre to convert them to epub. You can autoformat it for your nook in there.
Use calibre for everything eBook. Its the best software I've found to manage eBook libraries... without it, my library wouldn't be half as organized.
@rutter9
By the way, the Green Demon is back... :)
@SolidSnake
Haha I see. Santa hat and all! Merrrry Christmas!
@rutter9 I like to use the net (nudge nudge wink wink)
@rutter9 you spent >$250 for an eBook reader but use the Pirate Bay to download books without paying for them? Really?
@pdiddy
I have no idea what talking about. I just like to scan documents rolled up in bottles that wash ashore. Geesh!
@rutter9
I missed something... I'm unaware of any green-tinted ebook reader...educate me? :^)
This just tickles my nook!
Just in time for the first batch of nook customers to try the software update before their 14 day return period expires.
@dekay True, though anyone thinking of returning a nook would be wise to note what they're going for an eBay while in short supply.
@dekay
If I knew they was offering a free 14-day trial of nook, I would have went to the local brothel a lot sooner.
@dekay
10% restocking fee kills it.
That is why I didnt preorder the thing in the first place.
@DrDr 10% restocking fee doesn't apply if unit is defective.
Given the bugginess of the 1.0 release, it shouldn't be hard to make the argument. I was one of the first wave of nook recipients, and couldn't read Tipping Point (the free included book) without certain pages being unviewable (like having several pages torn out of a book). While there are workarounds, if you can't read the books you buy in a normal manner, that should constitute a defect. Just the tip of the iceberg - many problems besides being slow or the occasionally clunky UI. Besides, from a PR perspective, refusing to accept returns w/o charging the 10% at this stage would probably pile bad PR on top of bad PR.
I'll try the update today, and if it doesn't deal with the major bugs, back it goes.
Have had my Nook for over a week. I was not unhappy with it at all.
Got my update (to V 1.1) last night. Tried the Nook this AM when I got up.
It's now flipping pages faster than our Sony 505. Also a few other updates that make things better. Things are looking VERY good.
From what I see, it's all GOOD and it will just get better!

I am disappointed that the page turning speed hasn't improved much. I finally made it out to B&N yesterday and got some good hands on time it it was just soooo slow. I should go back again and try it out again assuming they update the firmware. I want to get into the ebook reader market, but I don't think the hardware is there yet, not to mention the whole DRM issues.
@elangomatt : After the update the page turning is slow? Seriously? I've tested it on several books and the thing is snappy.
@elangomatt
The page turning is plenty fast. I'd like to have a race against somewhere flipping the page of a regular book.
that's actually why I bought an ereader, because turning pages in a regular book annoyed me for whatever reason.
Is the touch- screen CoverFlow thing still laggy?
@AndroidRokz
The coverflow is faster but still seems to be the most useless feature for me. Everything else is list oriented, then there's the coverflow.
They broke the My Documents view. It now arranges everything randomly. There are rumors it breaks Adobe Digital Edition books but I don't have any to verify. Everything else is awesome so far. Page turns are much snappier. Formatting is a little faster, but still needs work. The Reading Now button jumps you right to the book with no Formatting screen.
My wife has had her nook for about a week and has read 3 books and loves it. It has turned out to be a wonderful birthday present. Just updated to 1.1 and works even better. Still some issues as mentioned above but overall much better.
I cant wait until Christmas because im getting a nook.
@goaliesaves probably won't arrive by christmas..
@AndroidRokz it probally will cause we orderered it before november 20th
Maybe bumping up to 1.6 will help?
This makes me want the nook over the Kindle that much more.
Of course, the biggest reason being ePub compatability. WTF, Amazon?
Will this disrupt the Nook rooting efforts?
@SolidSnake
nope! : D
@SolidSnake
don't mean to double post, but here's proof it doesn't mess with rooting
http://nookdevs.com/Firmware_Update
I just can;t wait til they manage to port the newer ROMs to it. I'd love to have a normal Android "Home Screen" on the bottom screen to launch things from.
Got my eMail last week saying that my nook would be here by Christmas. Their willingness to update and improve the OS is making me very, very happy.
Just curious if anyone else has these issues:
The Virtual "Swipe" to turn the page...rarely works. I can swipe about ten times in succession and only get one page turn if I'm lucky. Otherwise it's; swipe-wait 5 seconds-swip-wait 5 seconds-and no response. Secondly, if I download a new book...The Cover Page View on the LCD stops being aligned with what is show on the Main Screen. So for instance if I just download a book called "Night Fall" and go see it in cover view..clicking on it will then put my on a book called "The Hunger Games"...Until I do a shut down/start up. 1.1 update seems to have fixed or improved on some issues, Like page number/time display/some refresh rates. But where's the "go to page number update" or make highlighting and look up word functions actually usable. Shouldn't there be a whole section or page dedicated to my notes so I don't have to fish for the actual page to see what I highlighted. It seems like a waste of a function this way.
@ferdmani22
Also just noticed that when I used to click on a book to read..there was a cover page of sorts where I could choose to read or rate the book. That seems to now be completely out of the UI. So rating books is no longer possible? Anyone?
@ferdmani22
My nook finally died after testing its battery length (it lasted longer than I expected after the so-so battery life reviews), so I can't verify but I think there is a View Info thingymajig in the menu on the LCD. Hopefully the rating is there because every book I finish, I try and at least give a rating.
@ferdmani22 Try starting the swipe outside the touchscreen (on the white frame.
@Dale P
Best. Idea. Ever.
