Motorola Cliq gets rooted by the Dude
Sick of Motorola meting out Android firmware updates when it chooses? Trust in The Dude -- TheDudesAndroid, to be specific, a user over at ModMyMoto who has posted The Dudes Root for Cliq (following up an earlier and similarly unkempt version for the G1). The install process looks about as complicated as you might expect, so make sure you keep Walter away while you're re-flashing lest your handset go all nihilistic on ya. At this point it's just another 1.5 ROM being installed, but the hope is for a 2.1 port coming in the not too distant future. Unless you're really pining to get full control over your handset we'd go ahead and wait for that version of the Dude to abide.
Update: The Dude mentioned in comments that credit is also due to fellow Android magicians danation, Skilrax_CZ, and others. We can't think of any funny movie references for those names so we'll just leave it at that.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Phone's ringing, Dude.
Thanks Donnie!
@sewers
Shut the fuck up Sewers, you're out of your element!
"we'd go ahead and wait for that version of the Dude to preside"
But the dude ABIDES...
@Jason Murray Yikes, fixed.
@artist
Whole new meaning to the second cumming.
What does it mean "gets rooted"... I can confess this. I am a cell phone lover, but I am so ignorant about their nuts and bolts.... I keep reading about his "rooted" and "ROMS" and "radios" and I don't understand anything :S
Can someone throw some light into my darkness, my old friend?
@TikiTeko
Rooting just means they have used a hack/exploit to get ROOT access to their phone.
This is similar to ROOT access found in *nix/bsd installations.
@TikiTeko
Getting rooted = Allowing the core files of the device to edited and changed by the user, removing restrictions set in by Motorola
ROM = This is a copy of the 'operating system' of the phone in question, so when installing a rom you are giving it a new software to operate on.
Radio = about anything in the device that sends/receives data ina wireless manner. ie: the wifi, Bluetooth, fm transmitters, and the cell connection
This again is all in layman's terms
The Dude doesn't preside, The Dude ABIDES
that movie is like a good scotch or a fine wine. it just keeps getting better and better with age.
@willowtwf
Well that's, just, like, your opinion, man.
Why would anyone do this? The whole point of buying the CLIQ is for MOTOBLUR. If you only want access to the latest Android builds, buy a different phone like the Droid, which will receive the latest builds nearly as fast as they're published by Google. This person isn't going to get MOTOBLUR working on top of Android 2.0.1, so seems like a stupid thing to do to me.
@junktrunk
Some people find the Cliq hardware much nicer than G1 (more RAM!).
Also Motorola hasn't said anything about upgrading Cliq to 2.1, but the HAVE said that they are releasing 2.1 Motoblur devices. Trust me - the ROM guys WILL get Motoblur working on 2.1 if that is the case.
xnappo
@junktrunk I would be more inclined to buy the Cliq if it didn't have BLUR on it. I would prefer Cyanogen on it, but even a stock version of 1.6 would be nice.
TheDude did an awesome job getting 'su' on the Cliq - but it is important to also recognize the work of Skrilax_CZ who developed the technique to flash a custom ROM on the Cliq. You need both to get the Cliq 'rooted'. Skrilax's technique is new in the Android arena and will likely be helped for future phones!
Plenty of others over at ModMyMoto helped too...
xnappo
@xnappo I agree 100%. I wish I could write the article, but I did make sure to mention danation and Skrilax_CZ on my post. I worked with skrilax yesterday to get his app working the way we needed it to so this could even happen. I may have crossed the finish line, but modmymoto and crew definitely ran the relay
@junktrunk that's a silly thought. Anything is possible with android.
@TheDudesAndroid I added a mention.
@TimStevens Thanks Tim. I appreciate it, and the lebowski jokes. (Not sure who I'm more scared to get a c&d from, motorla/google, or the cohen bros...)
@TheDudesAndroid err Coen Brothers...
@xnappo I completely agree. Skrilax found the hole which allowed us to flash custom firmware. Without that, none of this would be possible. He deserves more credit.
TheDudesAndroid actually made the firmware that gets us root, so he deserves a lot of credit, too. I'm looking forward to more of his great work!
@xnappo
The technique should work also on Droid / Milestone. Droid has another hole elsewhere (so users which got the update preinstalled only will need it), while quest for Milestone is yet to be done (Droid hack doesn't work there). Just need some stock firmwares (shx / sbf format).
@TimStevens I just came back by to let you know that I updated the root method. We now have a great recovery from Amon_RA, and the thread now has a copy of my custom update.zip that adds features. See thread for details.

I don't see why people make such a big deal about Android phones being rooted. People have been rooting and loading custom roms on WinMo phones for years.
@(Unverified) Wow, a Windows device with a security flaw that allows admin/root access? Imagine that
hey man! theres a beverage here!
Man, they peed on my fuckin phone.
I still confuse it with the iRivier Cliq; bad name.
oh cool
-Look, Larry. Have you ever heard of Vietnam?
Let me explain something to you Larry. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing
