ASUS Eee PC 1001P with Atom N450 appears on Amazon.de

With Christmas out of the way and CES just around the corner we're starting to see significant momentum in the Pineview department (which is between HR and the Engadget Bouncy Moon Castle). Currently listed on Amazon.de as a pre-order item for €249 (roughly $360), the Asus Eee PC 1001P is a 10.1-inch clamshell PC featuring an Intel Atom N450 at 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM a 160GB HDD and Windows XP. Between this bad boy and that 1005P/PE we first set eyes on earlier this month, it sure looks like the next-gen processor will be available sooner rather than later. Wouldn't that be... magical?

More battery life is good but if this new version of the Atom is just as slow as the last then count me out.
@EddieN Yes, the new processors give you more battery life to spend waiting for apps to launch.
@CRA1G
I don't understand, I have a first gen Atom and Chrome start instantly, OO.o starts within seconds, and pretty much everything happens instantly. Ubuntu starts in less than a minute too.
Startup time has much more to do with your hard drive speed, so quit complaining about Atom which is fast enough for most everyone. Better battery life is in greater demand by the general public than is performance.
@Paul I think actual sales figures would bear out just the opposite. If you consider the bazillions (give or take) 15" laptops with 2-3 hours of battery life that get sold each month, the call for more frugal laptops you're referring to is likely coming mostly from the geek segment who spend all day on their computers.
The solution, IMO, is SSDs replacing HDDs, which should start happening widely in 2010 and 2011. By 2012, I hope that spinning magnetic platters are rarely found in consumer-grade portable computers. But then I'm a member of that same geek segment who wants better battery life. ;-)
@CRA1G
I don't think so. Netbook sales keep increase at huge rates (did I read something like up 100% last year?). Also, the people that are buying netbook-sized computers are looking for portability and not power. Portability and power life go hand in hand for most people, as carrying around a power brick is cumbersome.
For this form factor, 9-11" screens, having HD playback capabilities is pretty much all you need (but really only if the computer has HDMI out). That can easily be added by that Broadcom (sp?) chip.
Obviously, I think this was a good move for Intel.
@EddieN Asus Eee PC users will be well aware of the device, which features the same specs of last generation units, wrapped up with the new, faster and more efficient Intel processor. The units are currently priced by Amazon Germany at (384 USD). Not a bad way to start the year yet not phenomenal. Details: http://bit.ly/asus-eee-pc-1001p-details
Whoa! Doug Henning flashback!
@GuyWithDogs
I thought that was Mike Myers with a mustache..
I got bored of eee's when they brought the 532nd model out...
I went to Pineview High School.
foda-se
"It's an illusion!" ;)
Doug Henning sure has one big swollen yellow testicle. Must hurt
Oh look, it's a newly released netbook. Surely they've put ION graphic in it and it won't suck like the others.
No?
Ok, next.
That makes out at £220 in real money and thats a good price. I may buy my first netbook.
@kris120890
I'm disappointed about windows xp rather than windows 7 though.
Doug Henning: "I'm Jesus!"
Still waiting for the 1008PE.
@ThreeFourSeven
Why would you want that? For the fixed battery? The 1005 wasn't much thicker than the 1008.
@ToniCipriani
I like it, especially since it's slim and you can cover all the inputs. My 1008ha is so sleek.
Windows XP??? Why are manufacturers still rockin' that crap? People can talk about how it fits into corporate IT bla bla bla 'til they're blue in the face. Irrelevant. Things progress... that's life.
Besides, if someone truly needs or wants to wipe the HDD clean and load XP, they're free to do so. But for a brand new machine, let XP die already and get Windows 7 on these things!
@DogStar I'd rather see the ASUS with the option to not have any OS on it. It would certainly be cheaper.
BEZEEEEEELLLLLLLLLL! The original eye-irritant.
