ESPN 3D launches in June with World Cup soccer -- our football to follow later
Need any more proof this is the year of 3D? USA Today is reporting ESPN 3D will start broadcasting this summer with a World Cup soccer match, with additional content coming from the Summer X Games (we won't have to wait for the flick to hit theaters this time) NBA games, and college basketball & football. DirecTV still hasn't confirmed its rumored plans for 3D, but CableLabs CEO Paul Liao is quoted calling the level of engagement 3D sports presents viewers as "unprecedented." More details on exactly how 3D in the home will happen are sure to come throughout the week -- we've already been blown away by 3D sports, it looks like everyone else will have their chance in just a few months.

i can touch Cristiano Ronaldo with it, thats great. :D
@HelloSteveJobs but when will they start making the cameras have faces glued around the two lenses, so it looks like a cut-out of Mike Rowe is filming the game?
@HelloSteveJobs
Not only do we get to watch CR9 complain in HD, but now we get to see him do it in 3D...awesome
I wonder if the cameraman on the photo is looking into a 3D viewfinder... :\
Don't you need special 3D TV's to view 3D programming?
@Mitch Yes, or you'll need a converter of some kind for a 120/240hz tv, but since 3d standards don't really exists, who knows when that will happen. Plus I think 3d isn't a good fit for sports. There are portions of Avatar you can tell were slowed down, yet still have an unforgivable motion blur. In sports, thing tend to move fast, so unless everyone gets 240hz tv so that the shutter glasses can operate a 120hz, I can't see how it will end differently from that cowboys game demonstration, not to mention that there aren't any users out there with 3d set ups, meaning that this is for a really small niche.
@ddhboy Where do you see that they will use that advanced technologie? I am sure they will use something like ColorCode 3-D, because they will get a lot more viewers that way. It is an improvement of the old blue and red glasses and very very cheap, which makes it great in this transition stage from 2D to 3D.
@ddhboy They said that when I bought my first HD set & Receiver ($600) back in, wow, 2002... Without broadcasters, there will be no receivers purchased, ESPN is merely leading the way...
Don't you think it is about time for a new 3d story picture yet? They better offer the programing in 2d or people are going to get mad like at the cowboys game.
Maybe I don't watch enough sports but aren't most shots so wide angle that you really wouldn't get much of a 3D effect when looking at the field? Or is it filmed in a way to exaggerate the depth?
@reallynotnick If you actually read the article, you'd know that they have to use different camera positions for the 3D broadcast.
Genius! No need for Albumes y barajitas to droll anymore : )
When I dont have to wear the stupid glasses then Ill be interested.
Go to the stadium. There, no glasses and real 3D effect.
@migmanson True, but a trip to South Africa could be expensive. Also I don't think many sets will have random people in.
I just bought my 52'' last year. 3D is great but it sort of sucks the standard is changing so fast. I think I will wait until its proven and Directv has enough 3D channels to justify such a purchase.
I loved Avatar but I need a lot more content then that to trash the set I already have.
"Our football", You do have a big audience outside of the US im sure (:
@Rem337 :) I know, i respect it, but i always get my digs in when I can.
@RichardLawler haha, nothing wrong with that I guess ! good job
@Rem337 I think he meant "our hand egg." "Our" football team is in the World Cup. Getting ready to humiliate England again.
Will the 3d make sports more fun? look at that crowd, they sure look like they are too bored to watch... that guy in the corner is even watching the camera take their picture...
@(Unverified) Perhaps you are solely intending to be ironic, but notice how all the guys are wearing red jerseys and are depressed? Oh, except the one guy with the black T that says "state", these are emotional people, it's not that they are bored...they're depressed.
That camera doesn't look optimized for the filming of sports in 3D .. as in .. since the shot is so far away .. the lenses need to be a bit more spaced between each other. Does it utilize a system which, in real time dynamically, measures and then moves the lenses further apart based on distance? Hmm though I supposed it would work for a basketball game .. somewhat.
@JS Iguess the human eye can see in 3D and our eyes don't move further apart, or at least i don't think they do...
@(Unverified) In a sense they do, when you focus on something far away your eye balls look straight. When you focus on a closer subject, your eyes go slightly cross-eyed. James Cameron's DP developed a camera for Avatar that works on this principle.
@(Unverified)
Human eyes can't detect depth of far away objects. The human eyes can only perceive 3D of nearby obnects.
Sweet! Can't wait to see football in 3d, the brutal hits. Arghhhh
GET THAT BAD MAN OFF JONNY 5!! HE'S HURTING HIM!!
Forget 3D. I want ESPN to offer live online video streaming for the World Cup. I'd PAY for it!!!
@flux73 They may do something with espn360, which is free if you get your interweb connection through most carriers. Right now the streams are SD. I think most people would like to see the stream upgraded to HD.
Its not soccer its "FOOTBALL", it was called "FOOTBALL" way before "AMERICAN FOOTBALL" even existed! :D
P.S. "American Football" is just Gay Rugby with lots of helmets and silly pads!
@bigsofty was going to make the exact same comment. It's called football. The other sport is called American football. What the hell is soccer?
@bigsofty
That's funny...I used to think of soccer as gay. Who runs around in short shorts and high socks, ala 1970's?
http://www.huntington.edu/news/0102/images/johnlabor-soccer.jpg
@gerrrg basically, no one.
if you want to mock football, do it with recent pictures.
when american football will be as widely played as football or even as rugby then we`ll talk
@BArtNimal
Apparently the American language escapes you. I clearly said, "I USED to think of soccer as gay." The point of that photo was to illustrate why I USED to think of soccer as gay.
And quite frankly, we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!
@gerrrg I wasnt badmouthing USA. lol. havent said a single bad thing, have I ?
In your second sentence you used present tense and that's why i thought having a go at football using out of date pics :)
anyway, misunderstandings aside, i`m not trashing any countries or federations for that matter.
hhh, now on the topic, watching boxing on this thing should be fun :) + and put some head mounted cameras on the boxers :D
@gerrrg

@gerrrg So you claim that in the past, you "used to" have a bad opinion about something, and yet you mock it in the present day? Hmmm...
@(Unverified)
you beat me to it! excellent!
@bigsofty
While I agree that "soccer" should be called "football," as that is its proper name, "soccer" is okay, too, particularly here in America, given that it is a slang derivative of "as*soc*iation," as in "association football."
oh my god, what is that man doing to johnny 5! He's he's naked! Lol
Good, I can't wait to see USA vs England
Now not only will I not be able to find the remote, I will not be able to find my 3D glasses! UGH!
so does that mean all the production people in the truck are also wearing those goofy 3d glasses?!?
"Soccer" IS "our football."
@Standup Philosopher
U-S-A ..U-S-A ...U-S-A
Yes disassemble Johnny 5?
you guys can see the face made by the two camera lenses, right?
Poor Wall-E.
3D LCDs should ship with a punching glove so that we can really feel the Zidane - head butt
