YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANK GOD
@ipxnsv I JUST CAME!
@Nerdtalker
Dude . . . TMI
@Nerdtalker
...on your face it looks like
"a" as in singular? Any guesses as to which p it will be? re or ixi
@sonicfury or maybe Pre Plus. Hitting Verizon and At&t could be huge for little old Palm. Hopefully, at least for competition's sake.
@sonicfury Wouldn't matter... both suck.
The Pre died before it was on the market because it had no SDK.
And I can't even recall seeing Palm Pixi marketing material. Nor do I know one person that has/wants one.
Poor Windows Mobile. lol
@s2m0 They have just been slow. The pre is an amazing device. Its just had poor development coverage until now.
@dds1043
I can't wait for this. I'd love a Pre, it's the perfect phone and I've always said that. But because of our family plan, I'm stuck with AT&T no matter what (they have good service where I live anyways)
I'M PUMPED
@sonicfury BGR is reporting now that ATT will get TWO WebOS devices, so that pretty much says it all
@dds1043: Development support slow? Compared to what? The OS and phone have only been officially released for about 7 months, there was a beta SDK that was opened up about a month after the release...contrast this to Android, which has been around for almost 2 years, and iPhone, which has been basically around for what, 4? They both took their time to get going as well, if I recall correctly. New platforms kinda work that way. Development takes some time. Thankfully, it's pretty freaking quick on the Pre (well, if you're doing it the Mojo way).
This is pretty big news... WebOs will be on the top 3 Carriers now... I love the Pre & Like the Pixi but hopefully it's a new device...
@Banksta3 webOS devices on 3 of the 4 major US networks = amazing news for Palm. Methinks the rumors of their imminent demise have been (once again) greatly overstated.
@Banksta3
I'll settle for a WiFi Pixi, as long as it's not called "Pixi" anymore . . .
@Smart People Play Tuba If you read Engadget you probably wot want a Pixi whatever it's called. Pre is the way to go, until they beef up the Pixi at least.
@Banksta3
While WebOs on another carrier is awesome and welcome news, I think the bigger underlying announcement is that WebOs is no longer exclusive to Sprint...meaning - there is no real reason to stay or join Sprint.
@theattack
Well, Engdaget said the Pixi's keyboard was better than the Pre's. I'm just assuming the AT&T version of the Pixi-ish device will be beefier than Sprint's.
@Warren
Seriously, I don't get what Sprint's game is. They have the worst phone lineup of any US carrier. Palm wasn't a big enough brand to get many consumers to switch for the Pre, and now they don't even have that. They don't even have any rumored devices at this point that people care about.
It's especially sad since they have arguably the best or second to best network in the country. Fastest, most wide spread data according to some reports, and good voice coverage, with roaming onto the Verizon network.
@Banksta3
Since Palm hasn't had their keynote yet I'm hoping for new devices across all major carriers now.
@Warren I think you would find lots of people who would disagree with you about not having a reason to stay with Sprint. Sprint offers some of the best calling plans in the market. There any mobile, anytime plans with nights starting at 7PM are hard to beat and certainly much cheaper then anything Verizon or AT&T could offer. Add in a solid voice and data network as well as extensive roaming agreements and you get a lot of bang for the buck!
@Warren Maybe, that depends on AT&T's plan pricing. Right now the iPhone plans on AT&T are $30 more *per month* than a comparable plan for the Pre on Sprint.
@Warren
Except they have the plans with the most value if coverage in your area is great
@manekineko2
While that is a valid point its still the 2nd best. There are other carriers who offer better coverage no matter where you live.
@ericmn1
A lot of bang for your buck - yes - but I would think that for most people the calling plan would be 2nd or 3rd in priority to call quality, signal strength at home/work or phone selection (especially given this is a tech blog, I think most of us would choose a specific device at the cost of losing signal or call quality over a cheaper calling plan) Sprint cant continue to survive as a company off the consumers who put price plan or 7pm nights over everything else.
@neonpolaris
$30 data plan is ridiculous. I have an iPhone and thats the one thing that really upsets me about it. I would be ok with tiered data pricing - but im sure the $30 option would be the cheapest/lowest allotment of data and they would go up from there.
@manekineko2
I think sprint's plan is what really attracts people. Very cheap and good quality. As far as phone goes, it has pre, pixi and android phone. Really is on par with V and ATT.
@manekineko2 worst phone lineup? have you seen verizon's lineup? lol
@Banksta3
played with a pixi yesterday. What a piece of shit.
seriously, im a not a 'big' dude, but when one finger (not thumb) covers 3 buttons, there's no decision to be made. display is EXTRA small. the build isnt anything to write home about. Im not a big fan of the pre hardware, but i'd much rather use that....
than that little piece of pix shit. Ewww, what a stinker.
I am considering a moment though, even though its not as pretty as the hero, its like the flash compared to my touch pro, aka "slow-bastard-of-a-phone"
Man, this has to mean that the end of iPhone exclusivity is nigh.
@Jack I thought the exclusivity commitment was locked in at least until the end of 2010.
@Jack I don't see how you got to that conclusion from this bit of news. It's not like AT&T doesn't offer any other phones.
@CRA1G I think Jack's point was that the iPhone market share will stagnate in the US, as there are a lot of people who won't switch carriers for any phone, even the iPhone.
At the same time, Android is now going to be on all carriers, and has a lot of momentum, and webOS is finally leaving SprintVille, which can only help both OSes marketshare.
@Alan Strangis not likely given the iPhone 4.0 is coming up soon
@Alan Strangis
No actually my point was that with the iPhone AT&T clearly didn't NEED other phones. The iPhone alone accounts for 50% of all mobile internet usage worldwide. 50%! From a single phone! So the fact that AT&T is now apparently pushing very hard to get other desirable phones on their network is a pretty obvious sign that they're no longer going to have exclusivity on their single cash cow.
@Alan Strangis
Stagnate, keep sticking your head in the sand.
@Jack
its not a single phone. there are three of them that have been around for 3 years.
@JXCGunrunna
The iPhone is a single phone. There are different versions of it but they're all the same phone with the addition of extra features like GPS etc.
Droid and Nexus, for example, are not the same phone. That's the difference.
@Jack I'm pretty sure you're referring to that survey done by AdMob; which of course is a little biased considering AdMob is primarily a iPhone based ad service. Not hating on the iPhone here; but 50% of mobile internet browsing is not done on the iPhone.
@taitherin
Please provide proof to the contrary then, thanks. Your opinion doesn't count, only proof does.
@HighestRanked iPhone growth has already shown signs of slowing. As long as the iPhone is an AT&T exclusive, it'll only get so much market penetration.
@Alan Strangis
No it hasn't. iphone growth is actually growing. Apple is on track to sell 11 million iphones this past quarter. How many of your precious webOS or Android phones have been sold to date?
Unless by "webOS device" he actually means several hundred (thousand?) new cell-towers built around the United States, I don't know if it matters ... Unless by "webOS device" he means no more Wilson ads, then that's cool. But I doubt he means either of those things, so ...
Pre 2? Pixi Plus?
SWEET.
@sweet greggo
Don't be stupid. If the iPhone's exclusivity on AT&T is over, it's only going to get more popular because it can be used on more networks.
"Proxi"?
Awesome another device for AT&T's spotty 3G service. This is what will happen. Everyone will be excited YAY NEW DEVICE YAY NEW DEVICE, then people will start to bitch that the service is horrible. After some time of bitching Verizon will join in and make matters worse and slam the new device. Then AT&T will pay Luke Wilson an ungodly amount of money to try and keep AT&T customers hopes high for a better 3G service.... woah that was alot of typing.
Unreal! Android and Web OS?
Choice ftw!
Thank god. I've had my Pre on sprint since launch day and have converted about a dozen people away from the phones they had.
The iPhone is a nice device but is really starting to show its age in the era of Android/WebOS, and anyone who is a Palm fan knows what happens when you stick to the same basic OS and format for a long time.
I'm sure Apple will come out with something to reinvigorate the iPhone fans out there but they need to do it sooner than later with WebOS, Android and (probably) Windows Mobile 7 coming to AT&T.
@Pacey in terms of mobile operating system advancements Android is behind iPhone OS and WebOS is lagging behind Android. I'm not saying they're bad, which they're not by far and of course they're all light years ahead of WinMo.
@Pacey
The CEO of palm said that they planned to use web os as a platform for 10-15 years on the first engadget show. The iPhone has only been out for 2 1/2 years. How is that showing it's age yet?
