Sony announces line of SD memory cards -- no, really
We've heard rumors that Sony has some pretty interesting things in store for CES, but nothing that's hinted at anything like this shocker: Sony is producing a line of SD memory cards. Those will come in the form of both SD and mircoSD cards, the former of which run the gamut from 2GB to 32GB (all Class 4), while the latter will be available in 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB capacities. Is this the beginning of the end for Memory Stick? Not according to Sony, which assures us that the SD cards merely "complement" its existing Memory Stick line, and strengthen its position as a "full line media supplier." The folks at Sony don't even seem to have been able to bring themselves to show some pictures of the actual cards just yet, but you'll be able to see them for yourself when they roll out later this month, at prices ranging from $14.99 to $159.99.

its about time, SD dominates Memory Sticks

Seeing as how Memory Sticks are exclusive to Sony, that's not hard.
DOWN WITH PROPRIETORY FORMATS

memory stick makes me want to puke
Sony, you are a dirty little wh*re of a company. Putting your cards wherever you can fit 'em.
But memory sticks are a great reason to avoid Sony products, saving time in selecting what to buy. This will only add confusion to the market if suddenly they're relevant again!
@(Unverified)
Yeah, but some of Sony's products rock!
@(Unverified)
sony already supported compact flash in most of their slr's, so supporting sd cards aren't that surprising. people keep complaining about the high prices on memory sticks. what about XD cards? those cost even more than memory sticks.
so does this mean sony is taking a step away from proprietary?
@unknown714
I doubt it - look at the prices: 14 bucks for a 2GB one? That's a good price for such a card, if you're living in 2007.
@Ericloewe
Amazon and other online vendors will likely sell them for less anyway.
WHAT WHAT WHAT?!??!?!!?
@MastrCake
Dude, I swear if I wasn't in a work meeting, I would have shrieked in surprise with the same reaction.
Memory Schtick?
@MastrCake Hell must have frozen over last night. It is getting pretty cold around here...
Next thing you know, Toshiba might start making Blu-Ray players.
Oh wait...
Everyone let's join together for a laugh
No Class 6? If you're going to finally get into the SD game, why not do it right?
@Grubermeister This is Sony we're talking about. Remember the MiniDisc?
I really think Sony has finally got it that people don't like companies that develop all of their products around proprietary locked-up formats.
Sony.. the Apple of the PC world.
@enceladus I thought Apple was the apple of the PC world.
@enceladus
Except Sony know how to change. Where is my Blu-ray Steve?
@(Unverified)
Apples are Mac's not PC
@OCEAN CLAK
And Macs are not PCs now? How and why?
@OCEAN CLAK Except for the fact that PC stands for personal computer. Are you saying Macs aren't both personal and computers?
@OCEAN CLAK Last I checked, Apple makes personal computers.
@Tommy Five
EXCEPT Apple calls them Macs or Macintosh
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh
@OCEAN CLAK
Well, Apple can call them whatever they want. It doesn't change the fact that they are PCs.
Just like Hondas are cars and bananas are fruits.
@Endadget
PC's only run Windows and Linux. Macs only run OSX
My mac runs Windows just fine....
...now shut up, you're worse than the average fanboy
@OCEAN CLAK
Apple PCs can run Windows and Linux, while other PCs can run OSX - see "hackintosh".
The idea of PCs being something different than Macs was coined by the Apple marketing as a strategy to differentiate itself from others, especially from PCs running Windows (since those stupid Mac vs. PC ads usually refer to the PC as a Windows PC).

@24hourpartypal
Default setting when you first get the computer
PC's only run Windows and Linux. Macs only run OSX
and then boot camp and hackintosh if needed

@OCEAN CLAK Is the Macintosh a computer? Is it a computer for personal use? (The answer for both of those questions is: Yes)
Personal computer. PC. You're the kind of person who would defend the definition if Apple decided to call the iPhone an Azgobish instead of a phone. Sure it might be an Azgobish by Apple's terms, but it's still a damned phone.
@Tommy Five
Macs are also used for businesses and design and media companys so not always personal
PCs are personal computers for the home
@OCEAN CLAK Er, I use my Windows machine at work. Your arguments are
Screw it, not worth the effort to finish that retort.
@OCEAN CLAK How cute - someone educated via advertising soundbites.
@Rebajas First line from OCEAN CLAK's link to Wikipedia:
"The Macintosh, or Mac, is a series of several lines of personal computers designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc."
Point proven, moving on...
@enceladus
What an idiotic comment.
@Rebajas
Heres a line from wikipedia
''Apple facilitates all aspects of its hardware and creates its own operating system that is pre-installed on all Mac computers.''
@OCEAN CLAK I registered an account just so I could get this off my chest.
You are an idiot!
@OCEAN CLAK just to reiterate, rejebas had it spot on:
"How cute - someone educated via advertising soundbites."
and
"The Macintosh, or Mac, is a series of several lines of PERSONAL COMPUTERS designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc." -wikipedia
READ, OCEAN CLAK, READ.
It does not matter what software a computer is running or who makes it. it's still a computer. and all macs are also personal computers, regardless of what you use them for, as opposed to supercomputers that sit in warehouses and are the size of a bus.
Mac is a brandname. to think that it's fundamentally different is to be lured by advertising. how could macs not be computers? how could they not be personal, as opposed to bus sized warehouse supercomputers?
THERE IS NOTHING MORE TO A "PC" THAN THOSE 2 THINGS. EVERYTHING THAT IS THOSE THINGS IS A PC.
I don't see how you could be so blinded by advertising as to not recognise these basic facts.
@safe travels :)
Nice, now I can finally book that ski trip down in hell.
Shouldn't this be BREAKING NEWS ? !!
@Jones Johnson Gotta agree! Thought it would NEVER happen.
@Jones Johnson
Needs moar fruit logo to be "breaking"
@Jones Johnson
It would really have been breaking news if Sony have announced they're going to put slots for SD cards into their cameras and camcorders. Just making the cards are no big deal.
some one please make a 32gb microsd card!!
