Sony announces line of SD memory cards -- no, really
We've heard rumors that Sony has some pretty interesting things in store for CES, but nothing that's hinted at anything like this shocker: Sony is producing a line of SD memory cards. Those will come in the form of both SD and mircoSD cards, the former of which run the gamut from 2GB to 32GB (all Class 4), while the latter will be available in 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB capacities. Is this the beginning of the end for Memory Stick? Not according to Sony, which assures us that the SD cards merely "complement" its existing Memory Stick line, and strengthen its position as a "full line media supplier." The folks at Sony don't even seem to have been able to bring themselves to show some pictures of the actual cards just yet, but you'll be able to see them for yourself when they roll out later this month, at prices ranging from $14.99 to $159.99.

Seconded, thirded and fourthed. ;)
@rakeshin
Seriously, I dont understand why there are no 32GB microsd cards...
The Nexus One with 4GB is sort of a joke.
@resource I'm sure I remember seeing one at a Carphone Warehouse in the UK.
"mircoSD cards"
Come on Engadget..... Tut tut
Sorry my brain couldn't handle the words "SD card". "Sony" and "announce" together. All I read was:
"Sony announces line of memory stick pro xl mega fast duo cards"
:)
@Weasechops i was thinken more like quad-cell miniSD
They're abandoning the shtick?
What next? Ubuntu on VAIOs??
FINALLY SONY'S LISTENED AND IS NOW KILLING ALL MEMORY STICK CARDS FOR SD CARDS
FINALLY
Ye gods you're a dolt.
Try reading the article all the way through
@OCEAN CLAK What CJ said. They're offering SD cards in addition to MS. And please stop yelling at us!
Fifthed. Not I need it to double my N97's storage, but it's nice having bragging rights.
Sony being Sony, why do I still expect them to do something to screw this up... like it's an SD card, but it can only save files in some proprietary format that can only be read in Sony-branded SD-card readers.
Bad comment system strikes back - I was replying to rakeshin
And yet they're still more costly than more trusted brands of SD cards...
What's next? Toshiba producing BD players maybe??

you haven't been paying attention in class have you?

@ArhcAngel Umm, someone didn't pay attention to detail, that was sarcasm. As denoted by the /s
i'm not sure pictures are really necessary...
i think we know what SD cards look like.
"Sizes ranging from 2 to 32 GB, all class 4"
"Prices ranging from 14.99 to 159.99"
Which, I assume, means that sony ACTUALLY THINKS that we're going to pay 160 dollars for a 32GB Class 4 SD card.
Hear that? That's the sound of Sandisk laughing condecendingly while simultaneously rubbing cash all over themselves
I could care less, as I don't buy Sony gear. Ever since Sony showed its disdain for the consumer by putting a rootkit on their music CDs in 2005, opening up the unsuspecting public to a rash of security exploits, and then lying about it, I give my money to the other CE companies.
Rot in hell, Sony.
I actually saw this coming with the recent Sony mobile phone taking to use SD cards instead. Didn't think it would happen anywhere near this fast though.
@Dixi789 The Sony Ericsson Aino for anyone interested.
Now if only they can cram an SD slot in their cameras we will be all set.
O M G
oh sony, like no others
wow.. premium pricing and they are class 4's... unless it's a typo that's pretty much a fail considering cameras and phones are moving to HD recording class 4's wont be fast enough - there will be lag.

That's what I thought...someone said earlier that "Sony, being Sony is bound to screw this up" and I think they already did! Class 4 just doesn't cut it for the crowd they are catering to (the ones who actually BUY their over priced stuff for video capture).
Personally, the only thing I buy from Sony these days are their earphones and even with that I'm ready to jump ship...all because of their proprietary shenanigans in the past.
@Chaosdivine Headphones and PS3. That about covers my "Sony needs" :D
"don't even seem to have been able to bring themselves"
Ugh. There is something about those words in that order that makes me want to slap whoever proofread this article.
Proprietary Memory Sticks should go down with Betamax! :)
So, Sony finally decided to jump on the bandwagon, eh? Pretty surprising, really.
It would have been more the usual if Sony had introduced their all-new Memory Stick Ultra Pro Duo M3 Micro Z 16gb. Or something like that.
Could someone check on hell's fire?
OMG, is this true? Is Sony doing something sensible for a change?
This isn't the beginning of the end for Memory Stick - it's somewhere towards the middle of the end...
I've bought some sony SD cards here: http://www.hukommelseskortet.dk and they are working perfectly.
