Alienware M11X netbook gets official, costs less than a grand

Well, would you look at that: we've just gotten word on the M11X, a new Alienware netbook. It's got an 11.6-inch display, NVIDIA GT335M switchable graphics, a rumored 6.5 hours of battery life on integrated and "over 2 hours" on gaming mode. This bad boy will ship in the spring for less than $1,000. That's all we know for now, we'll update as we hear more.

Oh My God.
How good is the GT335M? Im not au fait with current nVidia laptop cards.
@MacMan
I'm not sure, but apparently it runs Crisis at 60 fps, and Morder Warfare in HD at 30fps, sounds good enough to me, i wonder about the processor and ram, but then again it runs Crisis at 60 fps, and Morder Warfare in HD at 30fps. Never thought I would be excited about a Dell!
@Jean
It's most definitely not running Crysis at 60FPS...
It's a decent chip regardless, 72 SPs... It should get about an 8k 3DMark06 score.
@Vdek
Thanks guys. Tempted by this, a netbook gamer :D
@Vdek
The live press event mentions it running Crysis at 60 fps. I assume at a resolution like 1368 x 768 though. Still not bad though.
@MacMan
If you're familiar with the ATI Radeon line, it should perform around the Mobility Radeon 4650 and 4670. You can check YpoCaramel's post below.
This is a feat with an 11-incher, in my opinion. Hopefully, the rest of the hardware is good. It looks like a good laptop to get my g/f instead of ASUS's G51Vx line of gaming notebooks.
My only question is: what's the CPU running this thing?
@MacMan
PROBLEM.

SOLVED.
@MacMan This is one of the high-rollers, all the while this laptop made a good rival with alienware m17x which cost more than 3k USD now this laptop selling for less than 1k? Sweetest. Details about alienware m17x: http://bit.ly/alienware-m11x-closest-competition
GT335M... according to notebookcheck that should be close in performance to a Mobility Radeon 4670 or 4650. Not bad, very interesting, but you're still limited by the AC Adapter for >2 hours of use.
@YpoCaramel
If it's close to a ATI Mobility Radeon 4670.... then WOW... I could easily buy this to complement a SFF Gaming PC...
I thought netbooks are meant to be a (more) mobile computer, not a substitute for a full fledged laptop... whats the point of a gaming netbook?
@Mentat
To make Alienware/Dell more money.
@Mentat
The point of it is for guys like me :) who like to game but have to travel for work. I value Small + enough performance to run some older games. if this thing turns out to be built well I see one in my future :)
@digitalat0m
and hopefully it has a CULV processor or something in it.
@digitalat0m
thank you,
Makes sense, I was talking to a coworker about it and he explained to me he is fairly excited because WOW is horrible on his netbook
@Mentat Flip it around. If you can game on a small notebook... why not? Hell, the graphical power is in the same league as the PS3/X360, though CPU power is probably ways off.
@digitalat0m don't we have ultraportables for about a grand that give much better performance and of course some gaming as you wish! just thinking...
Seems a little...pointless?
@Rick James So is your comment. If you don't recognize what its use is, then just walk away.
Problem is, from this one image, it looks really fugly. Why is there so much bezel, especially at the lower border of the screen? It ruins the entire look and makes me want to get a VAIO instead.
@TareG It probably needs a large footprint to make room for the internals.
@TareG VAIO Z man, VAIO Z.
Gaming netbook. Isn't that an Oxymoron?
@PBB
Not if it can play games.
Alienware: bringing WoW geeks back into daylight
A Netbook. For gaming. Really Alienware, really? God, this is why I hate this company. I bet it'll cost like 2,000 dollars too, freaking overpriced alienware crap. If you need gaming-on-the-go notebooks, head to Sager or Asus. If you need a gaming desktop go to Digital Storm or Falcon Northwest. Alienware is such garbage. Barely a step above iBuyPower or CyberPowerPC.
@Solidstate89
I think they made a misprint, there is no way that's a netbook...
RTFA, "This bad boy will ship in the spring for less than $1,000. "
@Solidstate89 You obviously can't read. "This bad boy will ship in the spring for less than $1,000."
@Vdek
Nope it's definitely a netbook... It's got an 11.6-inch screen.
@Hex Nope, it's definitely not a netbook. Just because it has a small screen doesn't make it a netbook. From Alienware twitter ""@blue13x - The M11x is not a netbook - it's so much more powerful! Don't let the size fool you. it will have Nvidia's GT graphics #DellCES"
http://twitter.com/Alienware
@Hex
Unless it turns out that this thing is running Atom or Neo, it's not a netbook. I don't care how big the screen is.
nice idea, but I would have rather had a standard CULV with a gaming docking station for when I'm home, this will just make me lazy in class
WAIT. I just blew up a picture of him holding that netbook and I see something UBER exciting. BACKLIT KEYS!
Take a look: http://www.conceyted.com/images/m11xkeys.jpg
@Conceyted All Alienware systems have configurable lighting - it's called AlienFX...This is nothing new. It's a consistent feature in their product line.
@phobos512
Right, but correct me if I am wrong here, this is the first netbook to have backlit keys.
@Conceyted It's been stated elsewhere but the whole netbook thing needs to stop. This is not a Pine Trail system. This is an ultraportable, likely with an i3 CULV. Obviously the details still have to be filled in. I don't personally think the backlit keys are something we need to be super excited about - the graphics performance is :D
@Conceyted
I dont think you are wrong....... I had to give back my MBP and get an hp mini 311 with ION..... But this alienware seems very tempting since its pretty much the same except for the awesomeness.......
@phobos512
"... likely with an i3 CULV."
No such thing, all the ULVs are i5s or i7s.
You guys that are complaining are obviously not the target market. I have for quite a long time been torn between portability and good graphics performance. The 9400M or N210M in all the small notebooks (to say nothing of integrated graphics) just does NOT do it for me, but at the same time I really don't want to lug around a 15" or larger laptop. So this could very well fill the exact capability gap I have. Looking forward to more details on this one...
This is magic.
Alienware is so ugly
@glamajamma
Exactly. I've always wondered who buys that repulsive stuff.
Dell you lost me when you put p4's in laptops that ran so effen hot they caught fire. Dell is over plus he ruined Austin I hate him. Come out of your Westlake castle jerk.
@3wood I like Austin still.......
Netbook. Alienware. Two words never indended to be in the same sentence.
@MarkProvanP
Alienware should never make a netbook. =D
Haha ! A miniaturized M17x, i love it ! Would be a sweet add-on to my Alienware laptop :-)
Better graphics in ultraportables is always a good thing. Also, can you guys please stop calling any
Just for the record, Dell didn't call it a Netbook. Engadget is using that term.
