HP dv4i leaks out: it's a $799 dv4 with a Core i5
Not sure why HP didn't announce this Core i5-powered dv4i with the rest of its CES laptops, but hey -- we didn't get an official announce of that slate last night either, so maybe HP just hates interesting things. Anyway, it's a dv4 with a Core i5, 2GB of DD3 RAM, ATI Mobility 4550 graphics powering a 1280x800 14-inch display, and an optional Blu-ray drive for $799, so yeah, we'd really want one if it didn't have the same terrible chrome trackpad as the rest of the dv line. Swing and a miss.

The pattern is ugly, why can't it just be plain?!
Wow, put in another 2GB of ram and hook up a external monitor and you got a fantastic desktop replacement under 800 bucks. Wow
You're a fool if you don't cop one of these. So call me a fool because im broke as shiiiiiiiit.
I'm not sure why people complain about trackpads. You can multi touch it, make it one big button, whatever, but the simple fact of the matter is this: GET A MOUSE. Trackpads suck compared to mice. I haven't been anywhere where I couldn't have my laptop and a mouse out (even on planes I was able to whip out the mouse....giggity)
@daftrok The MacBook Pro trackpads are awesome and do not suck in any way. Seriously, they are what justify the price of these things.
@daftrok
Have you ever tried to use a mouse in a classroom? The desks at my university can't even fit a whole piece of paper on it. Sad for a good college, but meh.
@Uncontrol Sorry, he's right, ALL trackpads suck, even apple's.
@Uncontrol Uh, NO. Getting a "nice" trackpad doesn't justify paying hundreds of dollars extra. And if you're in a classroom, why do you need a mouse for? You're either reading notes or typing something down. Stop playing Call of Duty and PAY ATTENTION!
@Turbo Have you ever used a macbook for more than 5 minutes? Their trackpads are wonderful.
I'm almost to the point where I will be unable to buy any other laptop because I won't be able to use the trackpad. All OTHER trackpads suck.
Delicious 16:10 resolution.
actually it's 64:40
@(Unverified) Ahhhhh, numbers!
@Solidstate89 16:10 should actually be 8:5, but then slow people wouldn't realize that it's a taller ratio than 16:9.
I don't think there's anything wrong with them being glossy. They have the same feel as almost all touchscreen phones. And if you use a feather touch, it works perfectly fine. It could be bigger, but this is one hell of a hardware package for the price.
Remove the stupid optical drive/blu ray, add more battery and 2 more gb of ram for the same price, and its a deal
Optical drives are dead, even if they are blu ray
@Hydra On the DV4 series you can eject the drive and replace it with a 2.5" hdd carrier. Too bad HP puts the worst possible LCD panels on these.
@Hydra Just because there's been a flurry of cheap optical driveless thin and lights doesn't mean the format is dead. There are many people who still rely on CDs.
@nichts Not really.
I see about one netbook for every laptop on campus. That's not even counting laptops without disk drives. People can manage.
not even one device has been announced that has the arrandale ULVs in them. CES has been eventless.
@Eraser Not true, the MSI X360 has ULV Arrandale. I too am waiting on it, and most likely laptops with it won't launch until closer to summer (which is when C2D culv is scheduled to be replaced).
@jayayess1190 oh C2D culv is scheduled to be replaced in the summer? i guess that changes the timeline a bit... damn i was hoping for a new toy this month.
this is a pretty damn good price with the features.
I kinda hate HP but.. for this price id almost be willing to recommend it.
Ooh, it's pretty-lookin. But does HP mention that it'll burn you when it's on your lap, or bend and squeak when you pick it up. Sure the gloss is nice in the store, but it's a pain in the ass later. Did I mention it will spontaneously combust when after the end of the warranty?
@n0str9
Agreed. HP laptops have terrible heat management and generally poor battery life too.
Lol and if i were to bet, it would spontaneously combust before the warranty ends. =)
@n0str9 clean the cat fur out of the fan duct and these won't overheat.
@Turbo I have 3, they all suck. No further explanation necessary.

Awesome !
Agreed, that trackpad is horrendous, which is strange because the dimpled one on the TX tablet was decent. That smooth, plasticky surface just doesn't work, but somehow one of the world's biggest PC makers still hasn't figured it out after years and years.
