Gateway pumps out EC Series ultraportables
Gateway might want us to refer to its new EC Series laptops as ultraportables, but we're calling this one like we see it... it's almost a netbook, but not quite. Regardless, the just announced EC14D boasts and 11.6-inch display and, oddly enough, an integrated DVD drive. Weighing in at just around 3 pounds, the EC14D is light and thin... just like a small laptop should be. Internally, it's got an Intel Ultra Low Voltage Pentium Core CPU, a 320GB hard drive, up to 8GB of memory (in two 4GB modules), a multicard reader, and Windows 7 Home Premium. If you're filled with anticipation at the thought of this one, well, you won't have to wait long. It'll be available by the end of January for a starting price of $629.99. Full press release is after the break.

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The new Gateway EC Series ultraportable notebook PC line is expanded today with new EC14D configurations that include an integrated DVD drive – a feature that is rarely found on compact notebooks with an 11.6-inch widescreen display.

The addition of an integrated DVD drive makes the popular EC14D line even more feature-rich for students, families and anyone on the go. Designed to be the ultimate line for mobile enthusiasts, the new ultraportable line comes in a very portable form factor that weighs only 3.55 pounds so it's easy to take on the go in a book bag or backpack.
"Customers understand how convenient it is to have a notebook PC that is portable enough to take nearly anywhere to stay connected and have fun – and the new EC14 brings a new element of entertainment to customers with the ability to watch DVD movies, play games on CD and DVD and more," said John Nguyen, product marketing manager for Acer America. How is this a Netbook?
@(Unverified)
i have the same question
they even called the allienware m11x a netbook earlier..
i assume that vaio TT will soon join the victims
@(Unverified) " light and thin" duhh... anyhow... lets start talken about a new phone... iPhone Nano anyone?
@(Unverified) If the area of the laptop fits within a sheet of paper and weighs under 4 pounds, its a netbook. If, however, they have the audacity to charge anything over $500 (even with built in DVD), it is not a netbook. It is a rip off.
@daftrok
I think its the 4GB of ram thats pushing up the price. Most netbooks still come with 1GB and are only upgradable to 2 or 3GB when its loaded with windows 7.
@daftrok So, then by that description the 13.1in Vaio Z or 12in Toshiba R600 are netbooks too despite their specs?
@James damn no edit button, but the 3gb max is if it comes with ION last I checked, unless Pinetrail changed that.
@daftrok
I agree. I hate how companies are now releasing laptops with underpowered processors at the pricepoint of laptops with a real processor. The ec1435u was a much better value.
@Patlex
The whole netbook vs notebook and which is what is all just marketing. People seem to want netbooks now for their portability and price so companies are just trying to stretch that out to get people looking at their products by classifying them as netbooks.
I also think its stupid that companies apply limitations on what can be in it if it has something else in it. Like if it has xp it can only have 1gb of ram and if it has ion it can only have 3gb. It seems like memory companies are getting screwed due to this and maybe a lawsuit is in need.
This is not a netbook!
Get rid of the DVD drive and it would be a good portable laptop.
@(Unverified)
As long as the dvd drive doesnt cause it to be thicker than it would be without one I cant see it being a negative. Id like to see how it compares with an atom CPU for performance though.
@(Unverified)
The base model (EC14) comes sans DVD drive, and runs 80 bucks less then the EC14D. Same stats, otherwise, which makes it the one I'm more likely to go for as I have no need for a disc drive thanks to the advent of high capacity USB thumb drives.
people still use dvd with laptops
Nice stuff, if it has ion graphics im in.
@James
Scratch that I guess it doesnt but still might be a contender considering its specs and other netbooks configured similarly cost about the same.
NOOO IM NOT FIRST but netbooks are around 11 inch or less its just a cool one
I rather have a second hard-drive or SSD or extra battery in place of the optical drive.
So, then my 11in Vaio TT is netbook, yet I had the option for blu-ray drive too. Odd isn't it?
this would be my choice for a 11 inch netbook.
8GB or ram in a netbook?
lols.
@FAP FAP FAP
2 4GB modules required ($$$$$$$$)
@Jay Evans thats not that expensive only run about 230.00 which is a fair price
Now THAT is awesome. Look at the arrow keys......... they finally put something good to the left and the right of the "up arrow" key. PgUp, PgDn and Home/End with Fn. Brilliant! It just makes things so much easier especially when cursoring through code or text documents.
Bravo. Let's hope this style of arrowkey design catches on. I hate the Home/PgUp/PgDn/End keys vertically on the right side of the keyboard. Aargh!!
@buoy
Of course, Acer bought Gateway, so not too surprised at the overlap, but that is pretty much the exact keyboard as my Acer Timeline 1810TZ.. Matter of fact, other than the optical drive, it's pretty much identical is spec to the 4 month old Acer Timeline 1810TZ.
I'm very much okay with NOT having the optical drive and increased battery life and portability, over this one too.
EC14D?
With an 11.6" screen?
Confusing.
How about some industry standardization on naming. If it has a 11.0-11.9 inch screen, call it an EC11D. That way it is easy to compare... uhh... fruit...er... uhh... stuff to stuff....
Smart idea. Theres alot of people who dont want to let go of their optical discs..... Everyone Ive recommended a netbook to (mostly because of price) always gripes about no cd/dvd drive........
anyone have a street date and which retailer? I am so hoping to get one
