Coby's MP837 thankfully doesn't pick up where the MP836 left off (video)
Surely you remember the Coby MP836, the first touchscreen PMP from the low-end company that we had a bit of trouble with at last year's CES. Well, this year they're back at it again -- this time pimping the MP837, which really deserves more than a one digit jump. We're glad to report that they've made quite a bit of progress over the year, and that they've addressed many of the problems from the first one. It has a 3-inch touchscreen with haptic feedback, and it actually registered input this time (though we couldn't confirm that it's capacitive). The software was also a lot more polished, as was the demo we got from a PR rep on the floor. See for yourself after the break.

FIRST! (always wanted to do that)
@Pedobear so you've always wanted to get downranked?
@Pedobear Why don't you have a seat right over there.
Okay, so no one's gonna say anything about his user name.
Okay.
@manifest3r
i like to experience both high, highly, and low ranks
i think its best to have 3 of both worlds (makes you think o.O)
@Pedobear I'M GONNA WARN HANNAH!
Its not a iPod Toch or Zune
But this is a nice PMP and looks like it will be reasonably priced
@Drybones5 if it costs $90 or even less I'd consider it. Anything above that and it won't sell. I mean with competition like the iPod touch and the Zune HD, the only thing you can win against those giants is with a lower price.
It's easy to see if a screen is capacitive or not. Just poke it with something that isn't skin. If it registers, it's resistive, if not, it's capacitive...
It'd incredible that a market for PMP still exists.
I recently had the occasion of comparing a friend's supposedly "audiophile PMP" made by Cowon with the media playng capabilities of my HTC HD2 , and using the same headphones my HD2 was arguably the best in all media categories.
We all had to agree that another friend's Nokia N97 was probably the best of all at reproducing music (though not vids and pics) and my other phone , an HTC Hero, when using a good dedicated app (such as the the free Meridian or RockOut) is on a par with all of the above.
I'm pretty sure that the Droid/Milestone, Nexus One, experia X10, etc. are at least as good; and if one insists on using Apple stuff I just don't get why anyone would want to buy an iPod touch instead of an iPhone.
PMPs, pocket calculators and Sat nav units belong to the past, the future belong to the "Universal Gizmo" , of which the smartphone is the present time first tentative incarnation.
As Douglas Adams predicted soon we will only need one device and one towel.
Which reminds me: how comes I have never seen a smartphone start screen sporting the "Don't panic!" motto?
Uhh, can someone tell me why a PMP needs a capacitive touch screen? I understand the general "benefits" of having a capacitive touch screen, but how is a PMP in any big way especially maligned by having a resistive screen?
WOAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DID HE SAY IT HAD ALBUM ART !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO FRIGGGING WAY
@theskill
Only if you're a good boy and finish your peas.
Would have been funny if he had mentioned that it supported album art......owe thats right he did
Kobi!!!!!!!
Opps. I meant Kobe!!!!
What? Oh I was too busy with my Zune HD to realize Coby made a 2006 gadget.
The OS seems to need a bit more polishing, transitions aren't superfluous and often help the user in understanding + using the UI. Also it's a shame such a sleek looking device has such a plain logo on it. Coby should get a new logo that doesn't look like a Sony knockoff logo.
I'm one of those people that actually still like to keep my media completely separate from my mobile phone. One of the main reasons being is I don't like sharing storage space between data and media. I own a Droid Eris which is used exclusively for communications and applications. I refuse to load media on it outside of pics and video taken with the onboard camera. And even that stuff gets archived at home.
What I'm curious about is if Coby's Media Manager is optional or required. I'm looking for a new PMP that's not tethered to any proprietary media managers and can function purely as a UMD. If I can't use a 3rd party app (such as Media Monkey) to manage my media then I ain't interested.
@Terrormaster
What about Cowon? Their players are very nice, they're not too expensive, and you can use any program with them. Their battery life and codec support is really good too. The Cowon D2+ is popular, you can expand them with SDHC cards.
@Terrormaster Cowon S9 or D2+
@Terrormaster Ditto on the Cowon S9. A good all around no nonsense PMP that doesn't lock you in to any proprietary software.
@Terrormaster Same for me. Though I don't care about storage so much but battery life. It's good to have 2 devices. When the PMPs battery ends I still can use my phone to call and do other stuff.
Anybody noticed that he said drag-and-drop? Not sync?
What? Coby actually did a good job... good job!
OMFG!!!
Their media management software will come out of the box!
*Looks at screen shot*
Hey, is that an android phone or something? Looks nice!
*Reads title*
Oh, never mind. Coby made it. I'd rather get dragged down a highway by a rope attached to my foot then attached to a Hummer driven by a drunk red-neck who is about to miss Nascar but still thinks he has time to stop and buy a sixpack of discount beer and make it to his run-down home and watch Nascar on his HDTV which is connected to basic Cable making the "HD" part of "HDTV" completely pointless. So the money that he spent to buy it at Walmart (Where else?) could've been used on bailing his troubled teenage son out of jail the past Tuesday when he robbed a liquor store and got caught. He ran, of course. But the many times he skipped Gym class to go smoke pot with his friends have finally caught up to him and now he is obese and can't run from (perhaps even more obese) police officers.
Yeah, I hate Coby.
The Linux community will be all over this.
You know your in trouble when Coby is at CES. Cmon serious CVS will be selling this in weeks.
Coby makes shit. Never buy from Coby. Never.
