Don't get us wrong, enabling the
Ovi Store was a pretty sweet add-on in the
last update -- but the second
N900 push in just a single week features a list of fixes and changes that should put smiles on a few owners' faces, too (and a few devs' faces, for that matter, while they wait for this
payment bug to get patched up). This time around we've got full support for Swiss keyboard layouts, better compatibility with 3-branded SIM cards, support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 in the handset's Mail for Exchange service, and a handful of performance and usability tweaks for
Ovi Maps. It'll be available both over-the-air and via PC download in a phased global rollout over the next day, so keep checking; no need to get all crazy about it if you've already installed the first update, though -- you'll be automatically alerted when this one's ready for you.
@N8D
Thanks for the advice but... i am not noticed any difference in engadget.
:-P
@magallanes Then you're either not very observant or not a long-time reader of Engadget and EngadgetMobile.
The quality of this site has gone down I would say about 300%.
And I am not just referring to sense of the biased posts. I am talking about overall.
And considering my comment is "Highly Ranked", there are obviously many others who agree with my observation.
@N8D
I haven't seen engadget during the Ryan Block days, but looking at Block's twitter he seems to a super apple fanboy too...
First impressions after getting the update:
- Browser is faster. As an easter egg, you can press ctrl-shift-o to enable use of the accelerometer to detect portrait mode.
- Ovi Maps is much, _much_ improved.
- Email is considerably faster.
@jgp Yep, ovi maps is much much better...
It is a shame that they didnt put a turn-by-turn yet but it is coming ;)
There was some kind of youtube video showing another app being built to provide this functionality
I wonder if this Nokia hate is some national thing by Engadget or just some weird nerd hate. CES podcast with them foaming about Nokia was a bit of eye opener.
@fatjoe
Hey dumbass, I guess you didn't see all those complaints about Apple's app store all the time on here. Damn how dumb some of you blind Nokia followers be.
still cant sync with google apps :/ very dissapointed tbh after waiting weeks for this update............my new 3gs iphone arrives tomorrow, so until i can sync with google apps my n900 will play second fiddle. Awesome phone however , and the future of mobile platforms (esp once they port one of the c64 emulators over :)), but a bit ironic that a linux phone cant sync with googles linux servers (even more ironic they employ m$ activesync), heck even googles new phone has sync probs too. pity google didnt spend some of their $$$ and develop an additional opensource OTA sync for phones and nix clients evolution etc....
First time visiting endgadget. heard alot about it.
Probably the last, the ammount of bias here is ridiculous.
@GregoryPeckory
Goodbye, no one wants you here anyways, attention seeker.
Engadget bashes anything that isnt apple.Fanboys
@lightforce
Stupid dummy, I guess that's why they bash Apple all the time or you are just too blind to see.
@Goona the people commenting bash apple all the time, not engadget. They dont uses sarcasit terms when talking about apple. So technically, your blind
@lifenexus
Dude go dig up all the posts when they have digs at Apple all the time, or just too blind of a fanboy to see that.
I really didn't have any problems with N900 before the update, the phone has been ridiculously stable. I haven't got a single unexpected reboot and have got this for two months now. I did notice a speed update in the OS and browser with the update. Not that either was slow before.
The browser is just amazing for something this size. Makes you wonder what others are doing wrong.
@Rev Lets see... Apple is busy preaching to the world that flash slow down phones and kills battery and will cause memory leaks.
Nokia is busy providing hardware support for it..
Apple is busy telling the world camera dont need flashes
Nokia is busy winning camera phone of the year award
@Goona You discredit yourself with this comment...
And then you guys do not know why we make fun of you here in France.
@Goona ya the "dumbasses" from india are the ceo is intel and other places in india... watch your mouth you worthless rat.
@lifenexus i mean other places in USA. typing error
@Mr w00t
You can make fun of us in France, no one gives a damn about your irrelevant country.
@lifenexus
Damn dude I can't understand your gibberish. Maybe you need some ESL classes?
@Goona Sacrebleu, according to you India is irrelevant, France is irrelevant... Who else is irrelevant? I guess you never went pass Texas right?
You know what? Give the Statue of Liberty back to us and put Ronald McDonald with half a liter coke on its place.
@Goona maybe you need some world knowledge about facts... Dont have a tv at home?
@Goona Goodluck in oblivion
N900 is the most reliable device.
iphone 3gs, droid, nexus one all plagued by technical issues. This is where nokia is a champ.
@katatonic
I don't know what the reliability stats are for high end smartphones, but based on what I've read on talk.maemo.org, the N900 isn't perfect like you say.
There's a pending rebooting issue (bug #6334 in bugs.maemo.org) that affects a fraction of the units, and which appears to be a hardware problem involving the watchdog. The fix (other than replacing your unit) involves turning off a power saving feature, that for obvious reasons is suboptimal.
That said, the N900 is my favorite smartphone by far. Maemo 6 should be an exceptional OS, and I look forward to see what Nokia has to offer.
Maemo has no games
@fighterfelix
it does have them
As a Nokia fan, i dont think Engadget is too bad.
Nokia have needed a kick up the rear recently and thats reflected here. This is a US based site and reflects its market and Nokia dont have a strong presence, given this site is a business, seems fair.
I didnt realize there wasnt an N900 review yet, that is a bit poor but then again who cares, theres a gazillion reviews out there.
With this firmware portrait mode in web browsing is enabled.
http://www.maemocommunity.com/nokia-n900-portrait-mode-web-browsing/
And where is the iSync plug-in for OS X?
Dear Nokia, this device is almost €600, for that kind of cash I would like to be able to use it like any of your Symbian phones. No iSync, no buy, it's that easy!
@(Unverified) patience. all will come out in time. they have maemo 6 also scheduled this year and new symbian UI and new device launches
Has this fixed the issues of the mic failing to work on non-VoIP calls? That's been a big complaint on the Maemo forums since the N900 released.
@lifenexus
As another fellow Indian I tend to agree. Screw this troll..
@Goona
You got so much free time to make an ASS of yourself in a public discussion??..GET A LIFE MAN..if everybody in your country is as smart as you, then your country is a **** country..even I'm not exactly a fan of Nokia, but there's a way to express your displeasure with Nokia in a civil way..
