We probably pour far too much time into dissecting the latest
ThinkPad model or
superphone, so to balance things out here's some positive news coming out of Intel regarding its laptop distribution programme for the developing world. Still a for-profit venture, the Classmate PC project seems to have been developing rather well, which has led the chipmaker to announce it'll be overhauling the
case designs and internals of the machines it has on offer. Coming later this year, the new netbook models will offer Atom N450 and N470 Pineview CPUs as well as integrated 3G and WiMAX connectivity. Yeah, that's pretty decent gear by anyone's standards, so it's no surprise that Argentina, Brazil and Turkey have signed up for a total of 426,000 units between them, adding to the two million devices
already shipped globally. Maybe someone should tell the UK government about this netbook craze
before it's too late.

+1 for effot
-1000 for wtf
I've never heard of these things(sorry from Australia) are they like those cheapish laptops or do they actually run a full OS?
oh yeah can i call you guys out on something? why are you picking on google for calling the nexus one a superphone when you've been using the term yourselves for quite some time:
http://mobile.engadget.com/2008/01/16/sony-ericsson-superphone-to-be-called-xperia/

.......just saying
Send kids crayons and books, maybe some Legos.
Stimulate their mind and imagination first before giving a 5 year old a laptop.
@LAY
Toys are dead. You could just simulate them!
why don't they keep the older hardware setup and reduce the costs as the prices come down?
@Coffee
Same reason you don't have Pentium III on your desk...
It should be "Argentina, Brazil and Turkey have signed up for a total of 426,000 units among them," not "Argentina, Brazil and Turkey have signed up for a total of 426,000 units between them." Please fix this Vlad, my English teacher is really pissed at you.
@Godnah
Argentina, Brazil and Turkey have almost 300M people "between them/among them". 426000 units seems like a very small order, indeed.
Wait, what?!? We are sending 3G and WiMAX packing mini laptops to third world countries, but we can't get decent 3G and WiMAX coverage in the US? Were the f' are our priorities at?
@KAL326 Most 3rd world countries have better cell networks because it's cheaper to set up towers than string cable. Cell networks are also more resilient to sabotage.
@barry99705 So what you're telling me is if somebody started digging up Comcast's lines I could get some WiMAX/4G coverage? That sounds like a win/win to me.
Its nice they are sending them out to 3rd world countries. But what about the poor communities right here in the US? Take care of home first.
@Synergi
They aren't free...Americans are welcome to buy high volumes if they want to as well.
Intel should ditch the classmate and help the OLPC project.
Coming to the UK 2020, maybe by the time hell has frozen over for me and I have kids of my own...
looks like that kid is drawing something rude....
So, where can we buy these? A convertible, touchscreen netbook with 3G and 720p video for $400? I know some schoolchildren who could use them.
@Michael Pollard www.2gopc.com and shop online via web: www.ctlcorp.com/shop
It's a good away of doing business.
b2busa@usa-ham.com
both the new pine trail version and the classmate convertible are available now from 2go PC. www.2gopc.com
@efstrom
That new pine trail version is the regular netbook...this article talks about a redesign of the convertible and new processors.
