Remember that
retooled controller that Sony seemed darn well inclined to bring to the masses with its PlayStation 3? Some might say
that was the original Arc, but given that just about everyone laughed the design off and forced the company's hand with the conventional
SIXAXIS, there seems to be a distinct possibility that the suits are about to get their revenge. According to "a concrete source speaking under conditions of strict anonymity,"
VG247 has it that Sony's forthcoming
PS3 motion controller will be labeled Arc when it hits retail shelves sometime "this year." If you'll recall, we knew that the device
was called Gem (or was it
Sphere?) during its internal production, but this is first time we've been notified of a proper name for those "on the outside." 'Course, only time (and high-ranking marketers) will tell whether the moniker will stick, but we find ourselves strangely attracted -- who knows, maybe we're just sympathetic.
Anyone else immediately think of Bill and Ted when they saw the article's title?
@Sonicslasher
No
@l3admonky
Yea, probably just me. Whenever I hear the word bodacious I always associate the word with Bill and Ted.
@Sonicslasher
Very true, but I left 1989 21 years ago and seeing as I've somehow misplaced my time machine, I probably won't be going back anytime soon.
WYLD STALLYNS FTW!
@Sonicslasher Nope not just you. The Theme song to the cartoon popped in my head.
@Sonicslasher
Nah, I still think of ta-ta when I heard bodacious. Then again, I am rarely NOT thinking about ta-ta.
@Sonicslasher -- No.
But this thing will be an instant buy at $50 or less.
@l3admonky sony-motion controller on its 'designing phase' was a bit more exhilarating than this one. Before, it was called the 'orb', 'gem' and now an arc.. perhaps, next it'll be called as a dildo. http://bit.ly/sony-motion-controller-before but I'm still crossing my fingers that they do change the design of the stick.
Thats a terrible name.....but it's no worst than Natal or the Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
@natsfan7
Yeah it kinda is. When you look at it you don't think, "I should name this controller 'The Arc'" I mean really? Why not the mic or ball-in-a-cup or how about sphere? Who knows maybe we'll come to find that Arc fits the device perfectly though. Only time will tell.
@l3admonky
Ball-in-a-cup, now theres a name for a product. I would buy like 14 of those.....and I don't even own a PS3.
@l3admonky Nah I say "Muppet Nose on a Stick"
@Pookiewood
It kinda looks like one of these things

@natsfan7 Except that Project Natal, while it does sound silly, is just a codename.
@MrGreen
True, but can they really change the name at this point? They've been showing this thing all over and calling it the Natal, so all the people know it as "that Natal-thingy."
@natsfan7:
Natal sounds badass, and no that's not a fanboi comment - I will not be buying one.
Wii did what Nintendo wanted it to do, the name became known worldwide for Video Games such as iPod became known for portable media player.
Arc is just stupid. It doesn't make sense for the controller no matter how Sony tries to make it so. Natal doesn't make sense, but it sounds badass. Arc just has nothing.
No matter what they name it, it will still be known worldwide as the PS3 dildo. Rockstar games will have tons of fun with it, knowing them.
As long as there's decent intuitive & fun games to go with it, doesn't matter if it's called Soil.
@Almo
How about 'NightSoil'?
hitachi magic wand massager - now for ps3
@vlad the inhaler
=)
@vlad the inhaler
Mrs. Putin calls him Vlad the Impaler but only in private moments.
@Why should I have all the fun - that comment is full of win
Honestly I don't care what they name this thing...its just looks like pure awesome from the videos I've seen.
Am I the only one who liked the original "boomerang"? I like it a lot more than the reused dualshock design.
@Appleman No you are not... It's such a shame...
@Appleman
Nope.
I was probably that it was silver, and all of Ken's talk about needing two jobs to afford it that soured the public's perception.
I played with Sixsense's TrueMotion controller in Las Vegas 2 weeks ago.. unbelievably accurate. Sony has some work to do.
How about ball on a stick?
Lollipop?
Ice Cream Cone?
Motion Controlling Lameness?
No matter how cool, I'll be hard pressed to buy one because it just looks absurdly corny.
It should be called, "If this is what the Wii Mote looked like then it would be deemed 'Kiddie' controller."
My "Source' at Sony Japan has confirmed to me that indeed it will be called "Sony Control Arc". Confirmed. My friends a CEO.....
Like Vlad, the only thing I think of is this thing looks like a vibrator.
PREDICTION: If it doesn't already have some sort of vibrating feedback, then it will be rigged and in a porno about 2 weeks after it hits the shelves.
In fact, I would love to see someone make something that looks like it (shouldn't be too hard), and then make a video of themselves using it. Let that video hit the internet, and watch the redesigns at sony begin.
People that would are underaged and the vid would be pulled.
@Showbiz
Yup, should be called the G-Spot Unit.
Let's have some fun, this beat is sick.
I want to take a ride on your Disco Stick.
@CubeGuy
In the great words of Lumberhg.
"ummm...yeaaa..."

When I look @ those early PS3 pics I wonnder, what did Sony invision that would require the =-3 to need 3 ether net port?
Hopefully this doesn't bomb....... but at least they could re-purpose the plastic molds to make a new mic for SingStar if it does....
video!!!

Looks like a vibrator.
Never seen one eh.
@Wwhat
and you obviously have only ever seen one.

At least Sony's improving. Once upon a time, they named their then-not-yet-released petabyte server storage solution the "PetaFile".
(Yes, they changed the name when U.S. execs learned what Tokyo H.Q. was preparing to call the thing. Whoops...)
Looks like a flashlight. (Looks like the pink sphere is just part of the cartoon, not part of the controller.)
@Michael Pollard
in fact the sphere is a changing color one and it's really part of the controller, as seen on this old video :
http://www.tvlesson.com/video/45044_ps3-motion-controller-review.html
Arc is a fine name, not that I think it matters too much. They just couldn't name it Gem, since I believe that was a Barbie ripoff cartoon in the late 80's or early 90's.
STICK BALL!
Doesn't Microsoft have an "arc" PC peripheral?
