Motorola launching 20-30 Android phones in 2010
Some interesting tidbits came out of Motorola's DEXT launch in Singapore today -- CNET Asia had a chance to sit down with Moto's Asia Pacific VP Spiro Nikolakopoulos, who said that the company would launch between 20 to 30 Android phones globally in 2010. Spiro also said that not every phone would make it to every market, so we're guessing the true number will be more like 10 if you count regional variants like the CLIQ and the DEXT as one model. Just by our count, Moto's already pretty close: off the tops of our heads we've heard of the Shadow, the Devour, the Backflip, the Ruth, and several others destined for China -- rather impressive for a company that was on the brink of collapse just a short while ago. No wonder it's reconsidering that spinoff, eh?

@mondeca It's safe to bet most of them will be Blur. Motorola described the decision process of stock Android vs. Blur as whether or not Google is interested in taking over the handset in question, like the Droid getting attention and promo on Google.com. Very few out of the 30 should be stock.
@mondeca They announced at CES that all phones will get upgraded to Eclair, including the blur ones.
I have a few more months on my contract, so I am very interested in seeing what Motorola is able to come up with.
30 android phones n still can't docked!!
Lol!!!!!
OMG now I will never be able to ever get a phone because the newest, greatest, next phone will always be on the way. hahaha
30 phones n still not 1 iphonekiller!!!! Agree?
@logic thinker my 66 year old dad loves his iphone.. good thing there's only one button on it. i prefer my new nexus one over my previous 3GS.
I don't like the concept of releasing different phones in different markets. This is not a good strategy. Apple has proven that you can spend all your resources on a few devices and then release that device in EVERY market -- except make the software universal. Unicode support, support for every language, etc...that is the proper way to do things in 2010. I am sick of phones with feature X being released in Korea, and the same model without feature XYZ being released in the USA. Fuck that.
I prefer the less is more approach but maybe that's just me.
@XChrisX That's gotta be my annoyance with Android over all. Everyone lusts over the Hero, then the Droid, then you get a Droid and it's all about the Nexus One, there's already murmurs about the Nexus 2 and we've all seen the HTC roadmap of the HD2-looking Bravo. There are too many phones being released all the time, too many new versions of Android coming out too fast with too many phones waiting on an update. I'd hate to feel so outdated, people with HTC Heros can't even download Google Goggles right now. It's a messy situation.
@JONNNathannn I hate to say, but the iPhone is such a powerful force, that most of these phone makers feel helpless in this new smartphone era dominated by RIM, and Apple. I've got to imagine that they feel Android is their only chance at staying afloat. However I like Apple, Palm, and RIMS approach of building their own software and hardware. This keeps everyone on the same page, and allows app developers to develop apps that work across all phones of a particular platform, instead of having to develop apps tailored towards specific handsets.
@JONNNathannn
It's funny.
Less than a year ago, everyone was complaining that there weren't enough Android handsets being released and that they were were all too slow.
Now everyone is complaining that there are TOO MANY phones coming out and that they are TOO FAST.
There's no pleasing people...
@Theli I think the main concern is that as soon as one phone comes out it's already old news the next day. People fear buying a device one minute only to have it trumped the next. My answer to that is get what you like, technology isn't evolving fast enough to make current phones obsolete at the rate new android phones are announced. Keyboarded, or keyboardless versions of the same handset in my opinion doesn't count as evolution.
Oh my god, why? So, when someone says "android sucks" and another person says "android rocks", they'll both be right. Too fragmented and inconsistent...
It´s obvious that the best way to success is not by any menas to sell 30 different phones, look to apple and it´s commercial model.
The manufacturer with most phone models is nokia and it´s year to year earning less money and losing market share.
I´m not saying that it is a bad move from Moto but maybe it´s not the best either.
And by the way: the more expensive, smart, luxurious model the more the margin the manufacturer earns.
All I have to say is Nokia released tons of models at all price points and look at where they are at. They are the #1 cell phone manufacturer in the world by more than 3x the next in line. The iPhone has it's niche in the market but some people don't need an iPhone so choice at the different price points and styles make sense.
I think this is the right direction Motorola should be going down.
Seems like Moto never learn their lesson (just look how many RAZR variations they made). Moto, just because you're using a free OS, doesn't mean you should go back to you old way of doing things, which put you in the hole in the first place. Spend all your resources into fewer and universal/worldwide models instead.
Awe man that phone looks like a bad Chinese iPhone rip. Somebody needs to call up Motorola and tell them they can compete with the iPhone and still do some original styling on their devices.
Does anyone else dislike the design of the BackFlip?
I mean the phone design itself looks great, but I think it's pretty stupid to have an exposed keyboard on the back rather than under the screen. As if you have to deal with the screen getting scratched or damage, now you got keys that are going to be scratching up against your pocket. And those silicone rubber "condoms" people use for their phones now for protection? How can you use those, when the back is the keyboard and wouldn't function if it's covered...
@pekosROB
I actually got the chance to play with it when I met a Motorola employee at my college. It's a pretty sweet phone with a unique and stellar hardware design. My only real complaint with it is the software (Blur with 1.5 underneath)
Not only am I not a fan of 1.5 but I really can't dig the GUI and feel of Blur.
that would be great for me!!!
various prices and choices!!!
not everybody can buy a 1000 dollar phone
