Apple's iPhone dev program whoopsie: 'Need to update this for the 27th launch'
We're sure everyone in Cupertino is ordering Chinese to the office this evening; it's going to be a late night. I's to dot, T's to cross, as they say, in preparation for what's undoubtedly going to be a big day tomorrow. Of course, consistently burning the candle at both ends leads to mistakes -- mistakes like this, for example: a placeholder on the signup form for Apple's iPhone Developer Program (that we've been able to confirm) reading "Need to update this for the 27th launch." 27th launch, indeed -- so what does this mean? If we had to guess, devs are going to get first crack at an updated iPhone OS -- something the company has done before -- which is suddenly going to make the $99 sign-up fee for the program sound a whole lot more reasonable for the impatient among us, isn't it?

Whoopsies...
@Lando Calrissian
People wonder why engadget post apple posts all the time.
It's quite obvious.
No NDA, just the fact that people read them, bitch about them, and create hype just by bitching.
Then more people visit.
So all the bitching below here is just making engadget $$$
@Lando Calrissian
Whoopsies indeed.
But was there really any question as to what was going to be released? No. Everyone knew that all the tablet-related patents where a smoke screen. Its much bigger; A device that makes tacos on command.
AND IT HAS MULTITOUCH!!!!
Is it Wednesday yet? (It was as if a million voices cried out and were suddenly silenced)...no Tablet?...WTF?
@Lando Calrissian. not as much of one as it seems. they are talking about the launch of a new SDK. which makes sense if they want content for 4.0 and/or the tablet to be ready by a future release date.
@KrisRoberts So?
@Lando Calrissian
Toasty! Frosty!
(only the cool people will get this reference)
Wow this is AMAZING!!!!
Ok, not really
why is this under the "cellphone" category? because of the iPhone OS? We don't even know what it can do...
@manifest3r
What would you have them file it under, the HD category?
might as well, HD tablet would be indeed awesomeness :)
@goatlover Seeing iPhone going to Veriz and other carriers is such a godsent for americans. More iPhone 4G and Apple tablet details: http://bit.ly/iphone-4g-apple-tablet-details
OS revisions are what I'm most looking forward to tomorrow.
@ebgolfin
You represent .000000001% of the Engadget population.
@SolidSnake
no, i think what you meant to say was "the lollipop guild" ;)
@ebgolfin me too!!!!
@SolidSnake
Haha, well I'm as excited as anyone to see the mystery tablet, but the OS revisions are something done to improve a product I actually own and use.
That said, I will love it if Apple releases an amazing interface for larger touch screens. Most people think a "big iPhone" is a bad idea, but I really can't see the issue with a touch device that takes a few core computing activities and does them extremely well while ditching the rest. Besides a few things I use for work, even when I look at my own computer I can pretty much reduce all my activity into probably about 3 "apps". Either way tomorrow should be fun.
@ebgolfin
Completely with you on that one.
4.0, here I come. Now I need a dev to add me to their beta testers... Any takers? :)
@Jonathan K
I'm just patiently waiting for the new MacBook Pros..
@ebgolfin Here's to hoping the 4.0 OS brings in the new Office 2010 option of multiple exchange accounts to its mail functionality. I got 99 exchange accounts, but this bitch only takes one......at a time....
Who even wants a tablet? Incredibly awkward size, no real keyboard, not handheld - can't be a good phone.
Not good for:
- College
- Business
- Anything?
@kpenning
Agree! I'm all about the apple fanboy stuff but this pad/tablet/slate thing doesn't sound sweet to me. We will have to see you never know when you could be amazed.
@kpenning
Oh jeez lighten the hell up. What did a tablet ever do to you???
Push you over in the yard, take your lunch or be squeezin your mom?
I admit I love all this sort of crap in the lead up to a new Apple product. The only issue I have is that it damn near interrupts my evening meal here in good olde Blighty.
My wife likes to call it daddy's ignorant time, as I spill peas on my keyboard refreshing Safari. Still along with keynotes it's a rare treat!
@BurtonBytes
Ha ha great post. I'm going to hide in a spare office at work during EST zone lunch
@kpenning i personally am excited for it!! Apple usually goes into an unpopular market and blows it out the water. Remember the release of the iPhone? Do you remember good smart phones before the iPhone? I don't think so!! The Blackberry was probably the only decent one out at the time.
@kpenning i meant to direct my comment at the negative nancy up there lmao
@kpenning
How is it an awkward size? It's about the same size as most books, only lighter. Of course it doesn't have a keyboard (it's a tablet!), and if it's on-screen keyboard is a larger, even easier to use version of the iPhone's (which is already pretty good), it will work fine. It's not meant to rival phones or even be a phone; it's meant for media and internet uses.
It's great for college students, the professional world, and even the layman for many reasons. And don't forget, what Apple does best is create products that you never even knew you wanted or needed, market them well, and make you feel alienated for not having one. It works! :P
@Mr Oos
"How is it an awkward size? It's about the same size as most books, only lighter. "
You have never seen it.
"Of course it doesn't have a keyboard (it's a tablet!), and if it's on-screen keyboard is a larger, even easier to use version of the iPhone's (which is already pretty good), it will work fine."
Ok...
UMPC has keyboards like this. The big complaint? The keyboard was too big and blocked a lot of the screen.
Magically on this device...."it will work fine". Didnt see that one coming.
"It's not meant to rival phones or even be a phone; it's meant for media and internet uses."
So an estimated 800 - 1200.00 media tablet is going to set the world on fire?
It's great for college students, the professional world"
You mean like those evil awful tablet PCs that run all of those programs no one wants? A tablet SIGHT UNSEEN with no indication of professional apps, relatively expensive, with likely missing things like ports, removable batteries... is "great for college students, the professional world..."?
"and even the layman for many reasons."
Other than reading e-book, what? I've read that a nifty cross-word puzzle was being rumored for it.
"And don't forget, what Apple does best is create products that you never even knew you wanted or needed, market them well, and make you feel alienated for not having one."
Ok, that's just cult-level wishful thinking. Sometimes they have popular products (iPod, iPhone), but sometimes they don't (MacBook air, OSX, Apple TV).
In other words, stop regurgitating Apple PR and advertising spin, with a hint of fairy magic, to deem a device, that for the 10000th time you've not seen, as being Earth-shattering.
@Atkins
For once, we are in agreement. The whole "full featured-OS's are the reasons tables fail" is ridiculous.
The REAL reason why tablets/slates have such low sales is because they often cost higher their laptop counterparts, whilest not having a keyboard, or are an ergonomic nightmare. The constant taunt of some people is that tablets have very low sales. I can assure you it's because, like the smartphones before the iPhone, people only bought the table because they really needed them or required them for work. The rest bought laptops.
The real question is if Apple can take this product out of the small userbase status and make them popular, like it has with mp3 players, or smartphones. With the amount of buzz being generated, I'm guessing they will do it. But that doesnt make me want a dumbed down OS over Win 7 or OSX any less.
What more disturbing to me, is that people are mistaking this move to modularized applications is cloud computing. And in a way it is. Its just a little disturbing to me the amount of functionality will be lost from not using full OSX in efforts to keep their cash cow (iPhone/iPod) consistent, and keep people at the App store.
Sweet, I just paid into the program yesterday! I want OS 4. :333

You must have been sick when they taught us all how to type in elementary school, which is unfortunate. Or you're 6 years old and still in elementary school, which makes you impressive!
I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist, but it seems almost as if Apple is feeding journalists controlled leaks!
@electrobrains and they are doing great job, eating all of them!!
Wow...who went and searched through all that?
@Plazmic Flame
Look at the scroll bar...
@Plazmic Flame
As you can tell from the scroll bar, the agreement is incomplete. Any dummy can notice it, assuming this news is not fake.
I think it is good move for the iSlate to run iPhone OS the more development resources put into iPhone OS the better for all iPhone uses, and of course it will give something for Android to copy.
@scottkrk
Someone sounds bitter. :)
@sfox8
Not at all, much happier for Android to benefit than say M$ :-)
I can't wait 'til tomorrow!!
Is this news? Somebody tell me.
@nickyboy
no
@nickyboy
If you didn't know it before... technically...
@nickyboy Get off engadget
How is this a whoopsie?
It would be a whoopsie if they released the name!
"i"s and "T"s... I see what you did there...
@FallenArms3
i didn'T, but now i do. clever indeed.
@Mr Oos
what?
(i)ncoherent (T)eletubbies?
iDont get iT =/
