Apple's iPhone dev program whoopsie: 'Need to update this for the 27th launch'
We're sure everyone in Cupertino is ordering Chinese to the office this evening; it's going to be a late night. I's to dot, T's to cross, as they say, in preparation for what's undoubtedly going to be a big day tomorrow. Of course, consistently burning the candle at both ends leads to mistakes -- mistakes like this, for example: a placeholder on the signup form for Apple's iPhone Developer Program (that we've been able to confirm) reading "Need to update this for the 27th launch." 27th launch, indeed -- so what does this mean? If we had to guess, devs are going to get first crack at an updated iPhone OS -- something the company has done before -- which is suddenly going to make the $99 sign-up fee for the program sound a whole lot more reasonable for the impatient among us, isn't it?

HINT: iTablet.
@FallenArms3
bah, now you've ruined the fun :(
Is Steve Jobs a god?
@TechGuru lol u kidding me....
@TechGuru -1
And iPhone Developer Connection at http://developer.apple.com/iphone is closed: "We'll be back soon".
Oops indeed... Stevie isn't going to be in the best of moods tomorrow if I had to guess. But of course we'll never know that since he'll step on stage proud and happy as ever.
@MRCUR
must be due to his new liver that some poor schmuck missed out on due to the fact that he's not the CEO of apple.
@iroq d mullet - If you really believe that then you're simply ignorant.
I can't wait till all this Apple shit blows over.
Oh, wait. Never. |:C
@Lucas
Apple iClean at your service
Apple is just having a super day :)
Wait... so if a dev signs up right now, they're theoretically held to no agreement. AWESOME!!!! FREE REIGN!!!
Four out of the five top-commented stories (soon to be 1,000+ comments) in the past 24 hrs deal with Apple.
Can't really blame Engadget for feeding the beast at this point...
@captlou
The beast will get a HUGE piece of meat tommorow.... It will take a while for it to digest.
@captlou You do realize that Engadget isn't just 'feeding the beast', they make money off of each view on these posts. Right now, A TON of people are viewing Apple related news in anticipation of the 'tablet'. Engadget is making a ton of money thanks to Apple fanboys and Apple haters alike.
So true, and it makes me laugh because at least 1/2 the commenting traffic on Apple-related articles bash Apple and how often Engadget posts about them.
I sure hope they launch a tablet tomorrow. I loves me some gadgets. The old gadgets need a new kid on the block so they can be envious/threatened and start behaving better...
And they'll have an even better day tomorrow!!
And you probably got someone fired for this rather trivial slip. Good job.
@lecti I know what you mean but I wouldn't call this slip trivial.
I hope iPhone OS 4.0 is dramatically different than the past 3 iterations. 3 iPhones later, and I'm bored with this OS, after seeing the nexus one, and Palm Pre, I just might jump ship.
@XChrisX I think you're right, Android and Palm are gaining ground fast (if not already passing Apple). Hopefully this is the kick in the ass they needed to make 4.0 great.
@werty1432k According to Apples sales numbers, the iPhone is still doing quite well, because it is grabbing so many new customers, but for those of that were early adopters in the very beginning, the OS is becoming very stale. At this point in the game, I just want something new, and if the Pre Pro finds it's way to AT&T, I might make the switch of *GASP*, even back to t-mo for the hd2, or nexus.
@XChrisX
I think you just defined yourself as an early adopter rather than a user.
You want something new to adopt early.
I don't actually have an iPhone yet. I might get the next model, mainly because the phone I have is working well for me.
And I have looked at other smart phones and they all look pretty annoying to me, the iPhone looks OK and actually practical and reasonably well designed so one day soon I might get one. This is because despite my role as a technology advisor to others, I use what is practical and does the job, not what is new and shiny.
I don't see why a company should update it's products just to stop people like you getting bored. They should update their products to provide a better and more useful product for people who want to get on with their lives.
A product that is selling well and has not undergone a major rework every year or so is a good product that was well thought out in the first place.
The iPhone has not as far as I can see changed dramatically since the first model, it's got more features and is faster and 3G, but it is still the same basic design. This is good.
If you constantly want a new toy to play with then you are going to eventually be bored by well designed products with a long life.
@richardw To be honest I plan to keep my iPhone, and have loved every upgrade to the OS thus far. However, I just really like new gadgets(why else would any of us be posting here), and and find myself more and more intrigued by Android, and WebOS. Really I just want something else, or maybe in addition to, if I can keep my iPhone plan and run whatever android, or webos device AT&T has in the pipeline. However, to sum this up I think Apples iPhone OS is still the best mobile OS out there, heck android, and webOS seem to be taking pieces from Apples book. But I know I'm not alone when I say I want something different at this point.
I predict this will be the first in a series of Apple products bust.
Look for HTC to make a better, more open tablet soon after.
@josesxi
A bit like HTC's phone range that has taken the market by storm I suppose.
Poor Apple, lost the Phone market to HTC, not!!!
Just as well I use a Sony Ericsson phone, much more open, I can buy crap accessories from anywhere. I can also download software from anywhere, not that I would want to.
Open is no substitute for useful or well made.
(Actually I really like my K750i - but after market stuff is low quality, and I have only ever downloaded one program that I actually used, which was a coca-cola game.)
Now that I have added to the traffic on this issue:
The tech sites have had a great time with this product release - lots of hits for something that hasn't happened.
I have my doubts about the ability of any company to make a tablet that is the right mix of features and cost. I was once involved in a tablet project so I have thought about it. Hardware was the easy part as there was a reference design from the chipmaker that just needed to be built. Software for mass marketing is a different matter. Content also hard at the time, for Apple not so hard.
Having said that there has been a lot of garbage spoken on blogs across the net declaring that the tablet will fail or will be really good. Both of these opinions are a waste of bandwidth.
It seems to me that those declaring failure have a hidden agenda, they really don't give reasons that make sense.
It may very well fail, it wouldn't surprise me. It may be something I will not want or buy, or it may be the computing interface I have always wanted.
It may even be the computing interface that 50 million people buy and I don't want.
Or maybe the computing interface that I want and nobody else does.
We shall see, but if you are one of those who have declared it dead and prove to be right, don't congratulate yourself on predicting that the hard work of others will fail. Go out and do better or shut up.
Oops!
everybody pipe the fuck down. Keep your pants on till tomorrow. Stop trying to peep through the wrapping paper, just wait for xmas day. Greedy bastards.
I've heard another rumour that the Tablet will be released and the Macbook Air will be quietly discontinued as a result. Let's face it, it hasn't exactly made Apple billions and it's just a low-spec, much smaller Macbook with a stupid price tag. I know a good few Apple owners and they all turn their noses up at it; most of them have iMacs and Macbook Pros.
Whether or not that's true, I have no idea. I doubt it personally but it's just more conjecture and never guaranteed.
@UK31337. given the lack of power in the Air, I wouldn't be shocked if that's exactly what happens.
@Charlik
You may be right.
The Air has changed the laptop world though, moved development from big and clunky to small and slim.
The Air is also seen as attractive to many buyers, most of whom are not Mac users, most Mac users buy on Specs/Price and the Air doesn't fit in due to the price.
Apple users contrary to the MS shills are actually very conscious of price and performance, not so much on fancy design.
In my experience it's mostly the PC users thinking of switching that see a thin case and think that's what matters, and they seem to assume that the Air is top of the range due to the high price and thin case.
I would like a thin and light laptop, but will wait till the feature set and price point are right. If you really need small and light then an Air is great.
The Tablet may just fill that need better?
That's not great news...means possiblely the tablet will be iPhone-like
Not all bad, but I was hoping for a whole new product(although it's possible it just for iPhone OS 4.0 stuff)
I'm only in it for iLife.
Well they probably WILL give us devs a beta. how about an early device. that'd be sweet to.
You don't need to pay to download the SDK (case in point: I have access to the 3.1.2 SDK right now, and I never paid $99 to Apple for that). The fee is required to gain access to the App Store.
ok this is NOT news...
Place holder comment - need to update this for submission to Engadget tomorrow.
wow, a lot of comments for something leaked and controlled by Apple. You gents (and ladies) ever consider these posts alone builds hype and in turn has people standing for this "release"? By no means do I dislike the idea of a "tablet". I do find it very interesting how emotionally charged some of you are over this. Relax, smoke a cig, take a drink a drink, and just wait for the "news" like everyone else.
Am I wrong or does this not mean new iPhone software? Aren't they just opening up development for the new tablet, because it runs the iPhone OS? I'm not necessarily expecting new iPhone functionality today.
