Is this the Apple tablet? (update: new images)

On a totally separate note, we also received a tip claiming to have some specs -- we can't verify any of this either, but we're told that the device will have a 10-inch screen and look like a larger iPhone with a MacBook-like aluminum back, and that pricing will run $800 on contract with Verizon and $1000 without when it arrives in March. We're also told that the official name remains a secret and that Apple employees are still calling it by the codename of "K48" -- a name we last heard in May from the same source that pegged the iPhone 3GS exactly. This source also tells us that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon as well and that we'll see iLife '10 tomorrow, but there won't be any MacBook updates. A relatively safe set of predictions -- which is why we sort of believe them.
Just 13 hours to go -- we'll find out if any of this is the real deal soon enough.
Update: Based on some rough measurements, that screen does appear to be between 9- and 10-inches diagonal. Additionally, it looks as though there could be a front-facing camera on the opposite side of the home button (up top in these photos) due to that cutout section, though the images are really too grainy to know for certain.
Update 2: Our source has shared another photograph, this time showing an iPhone resting on the tablet for comparison. Check it out after the break (bigger image for inspection available in the gallery).
Update 3: Gizmodo managed to snag some images of what appears to be the back of the tablet from Chinese forum WeiPhone before they were mysteriously yanked. WeiPhone is the same forum that leaked the K48 name way back when, so who knows -- the image shows what could be RF testing, but one of them feels kind of render-y to us. Check 'em all in the gallery!

:O Wow... K its over.
@CJisohsocool It's not over until Jobso sings.
@Floppy If it's $1000, then yes, it's already over.
Saint Lucia > Virgin Islands
@One Love
Yo where you from in St. Lucia I have family Gros Islet and Castries.
@CJisohsocool its over for everyones pockets both financially and in seam strength. thing is huge
@lamerz
Exactly, if it's $1000, this thing has no hope of tapping into a mainstream market.
@Jehryan
how 'bout we save the gay shit for chemistry.com and talk about $1000 ipods
@CJisohsocool
If we add the number of tablet posts, plus the number of rumors, plus this picture, it will equate to engadget imploding tomorrow. Then a black hole will spew forth, and our world would be sucked,and will time travel to 2012. Then it will be over.
@lamerz
$1000? We'll probably be lucky it's not $2000+ .. how much was the Air again? A tablet might add 3G, capacitive multitouch, and a digitizer ...
@CJisohsocool Yuck - iPhone OS. I like it on the phone, but who wants a 10 inch phone?
@Jehryan: Big Up!
@CJisohsocool
I just wanna know how they plan on accessing the battery with it bolted down like that - -wait...
@CJisohsocool
Lol I knew i shouldnt of been the first poster :( gonna have 30 emails of replys lol
Wow a 10" iPhone that cost $1000. Apple has changed the world forever.
It has FAIL written all over it...sigh
@CJisohsocool
Oh wow, that works for you? I can't even change my freakin' picture!
Diss all you want guys, but at the end of the day this is gonna sell like hotcakes.. or hot tablets.
@CJisohsocool
Wow metal screws that give it an industrial look...now where have I seen that?
Please Engadget, stop
Talking about this device is like crack cocaine to pundits, they just can't help themselves
@Vance
When has Apple ever needed the mainstream market?
@c w j
I'm not saying they do, but going mainstream doesn't seem to ever be a bad thing in terms of their profits.
Sure, OS X is not mainstream, but look at the iPod and iPhone. Both would be considered pretty mainstream if you ask me, no doubt about the iPhone. Every kid I know who can afford one seems to have one, and quite a few who can't too.
And really, I don't see why they wouldn't want to go mainstream since that just means more money for them.
@CJisohsocool I'm still hoping it has pressure sensitive screen like wacom tablets.
@(Unverified) Hell, for that price (plus contract) I'll just get two iphones, bitches
@(Unverified) for people in australia, the normal iphone costs $1000, so in a way, a 10" one is just more for free??
regardless im more excited about iphone 4.0 then this...
also does the last picture look like its on the apple stage?? and someone ninja'd and took a picture by lifting the covers?
@trentblase
Do you seriously look at 'price tags' while buying Apple products? Even with this tag, anuual sales wud be 10mn units, and apple will be a 100bn company by 2011. Such is the science of product marketing.
L E A K :
from last 2 weeks betatester
.. also, Farmville for Apple tablet is a huge game changer. I know for a FACT Mark Pincus is onstage tomorrow with Jobs.
the apple tablet is running an iphone os flavor with ability to have multiple apps running at same time (ie pandora, browser
Ok, I'm going to bed (with apple tablet after reading nytimes+Vanity Fair on it!), steve jobs outdid himself, its greatest device ever!!!
Apple tablet's 2 cameras is sick feature for video conferencing: u shoot what's in front of you + yourself. Augmented video conferncing!
Yes, apple tablet is oled + back has solar pad for recharging, but it really doesn't work quickly. More a gimmic. Verizon+att,wifi yes!
Apple Tablet has thumbpads on each side for mouse guestures, reads fingerprint for security. Up to 5 profiles by finerprint for family.
Yes, there are 2cameras: one in front and one in back (or it may be one with some double lens) so you record yourself and in front of u.
Well, I can tell u the battery life is great in ebook reading mode but not great when on wifi or playing games. 2-3hrs
The price will be 599, 699 and 799 depending on size and memory in apple tablet. Also, wireless keyboard + monitor connection for tv
The best part ofthe apple tablet as beta user has been the built in HDTV tuner and pvr, and the chess game.
@lamerz
There's something very undignified complaining about the cost of something, before you even know the cost. There's plenty of cheaper options if Apple products are out of your budget.
Complaining about the cost of stuff in a public forum just makes you look cheap. Do you go on car blogs complaining that the latest cars are all too expensive?
if its CDMA, also fail cos whole world is under GSM!!!
@oGMo MBA was $1800. Now $1500
@CJisohsocool I'm gonna to buy, because it's included App store (cydia)
@Anatidae I hate to say it, but there will be fairly enough hipster douches who will happy trying to be cool in public with it.
iPhone OS = Fail
$1000 = Fail
Verizon/CDMA = Fail
@CJisohsocool in six months apple will drop the price by several hundred and it will be better, but they won't refund the money back to the early adopters 0:)
@Vance It just makes me smile, coming here and reading posts from guys that don't like apple and it's product. Hating this won't make your pc better. Just leave it alone for crying out loud.
And secondly, it's apple. They seem to know a thing or two about the industry. I'm excited for the event, and if your not, why are you here?
@(Unverified)
God the anti-Apple fanboys are so much worse than the pro-Apple fanboys. And so much more vocal. Wahh wahh wahh.
And what is the bet that tied to a telco this will be released without a sim and in Europe
before March.
It has to do a lot for that money and an iPhone OS can't possibly offer a Netbook type Windoze experience. (yuk).
Got to hope this misses the real spec and price. And really hope it is not a US only release which will kill growth big time.
@katatonic .. umm the iPhone works on GSM so why wouldn't the tablet ? Is that REALLY that hard to understand ?
@lamerz
The price will be 599, 699 and 799 depending on size and memory on it.
@lamerz
If this thing costs a thousand dollars, i think it the name should be
"i-rate" cos that'll be me.
@CJisohsocool
Way to sneak in "first" in a more subtle manner, avoiding internet heat.
you're right man-I won't pay $1000 for a tablet,even if it is apple.wth it is running iphone os?i wanna mac!
3gs 16gb costs 900$ in my country. I cant imagine how high the prices will go for tablet
Countdown to the Event!

@c w j
I dunno, they need it enough to release a new iPod every year, and advertise the iPhone about 99% more than any other phone in mainstream media (to elaborate: The number of iPhone commercials I saw on public Television last year: around 100, for any other phone: near enough to none).
@Dannelander
i like having control of my machines, thanks. i don't need someone in a third world country building a machine for me so that they can charge more. why does every apple fan assume that pc users WANT apple products? we don't.
@Swagger Actually most of the folks I know that are not fans of Apple, are highly paid technical professionals. Of course I wouldn't call the haters. It would be more accurate to say they are skeptics of Apple's tactics, marketing claims, and pricing. Most of them recognize the brilliance of the iPhone interface, or the cohesiveness of the Apple experience for end users. They just aren't willing to put up with Apple's locked down environment, or luxury pricing to invest their lives in it.
As well, most of the Apple fanboy's I have known, are students, and still living off their parents. There are undoubtedly a lot of well to do Apple fans, but when I see the guy with the Mac at Starbucks, I don't automatically assume he financially independent, as he is just as likely to be able to still living at home. Wheras, if I see a guy at Starbucks with a Thinkpad, I am assuming he is probably approaching or surpassing a 6 figure income.
@Vance No, disrespect but in case you missed something Apple has always had expensive products, G4-5, Mac Book, Original Iphone was($600), so how is this any different people will buy it and then Apple will market it to the rest to make them think they are not cool if they don't have one, that's there MO.
@Anatidae Obviously, people who loathe WinMo and Android?
@grindking
You like having control over your PC. So do I. I built it and chose the software to install on it.
However, most of the devices I use afford me very little "control" over them and it doesn't bother me one bit. I don't do much with my Xbox 360 except pop games in it and watch movies - no real control there. I can adjust my refrigerator to a fairly narrow band of temperatures - no real control there. I've changed some of my car's computer's settings, so there is a little control there. Of course, I've violated my warranty doing so.
I don't understand this god-given right to be able to modify and bastardize anything with a microprocessor in it. If I were in charge of a company making electronics, I'd do the exact same thing. If you modify my stuff, I'm going to cut you off for support.
