Is this the Apple tablet? (update: new images)

On a totally separate note, we also received a tip claiming to have some specs -- we can't verify any of this either, but we're told that the device will have a 10-inch screen and look like a larger iPhone with a MacBook-like aluminum back, and that pricing will run $800 on contract with Verizon and $1000 without when it arrives in March. We're also told that the official name remains a secret and that Apple employees are still calling it by the codename of "K48" -- a name we last heard in May from the same source that pegged the iPhone 3GS exactly. This source also tells us that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon as well and that we'll see iLife '10 tomorrow, but there won't be any MacBook updates. A relatively safe set of predictions -- which is why we sort of believe them.
Just 13 hours to go -- we'll find out if any of this is the real deal soon enough.
Update: Based on some rough measurements, that screen does appear to be between 9- and 10-inches diagonal. Additionally, it looks as though there could be a front-facing camera on the opposite side of the home button (up top in these photos) due to that cutout section, though the images are really too grainy to know for certain.
Update 2: Our source has shared another photograph, this time showing an iPhone resting on the tablet for comparison. Check it out after the break (bigger image for inspection available in the gallery).
Update 3: Gizmodo managed to snag some images of what appears to be the back of the tablet from Chinese forum WeiPhone before they were mysteriously yanked. WeiPhone is the same forum that leaked the K48 name way back when, so who knows -- the image shows what could be RF testing, but one of them feels kind of render-y to us. Check 'em all in the gallery!

I'd say that's a completely legit picture, since unreleased products usually have "covers" on them when they enter testing phase = are sent to companies/facilities which do the testing (unreleased cellphones, for example, have something similar, covering all but buttons and screen).
It'll be interesting to see how well Apple's new E-Reader app compares the Adobe Air.

To big to carry around like a phone and to small to be as useful as computer/netbook. I just don't get the market they are going after.
They are going after 1) people who will buy anything Apple. 2) Students who have money to blow and spend $800/semester on text books anyway and 3) People who will follow #1 and #2 after it becomes a standard way to consume media. And if people didn't make bluetooth ear devices so dorky, we wouldn't have a problem not holding a phone up to our ear to talk. You don't complain that we no longer go to the TV to change channels, because the remote makes sense and wasn't dorkified. for students who are carrying a bookbag or backpack right now, it will slip in without a problem.

Man Farmville is going to change how we play video-games. LAN party FPSs here we come. You haven't played MW2 until you've played it on an underpowered computer with a touchscreen directional pad.

WOOOOH. Wait a minute. Wasn´t there a time when Apple had net losses (Okt. 1995 – Sept. 1996; −816 million USD - Okt. 1996 – Sept. 1997, −1.045 million USD - see German Wikipedia). Never forget even Jobs is just a human and no God and things can always turn and go terribly wrong.

Okay first off it's by far not over. I currently sell cell phones from a different phone company. The high priced phones seem not to be a issue reguardless of the ecinomic decline over the past few years, and Verizon is able to bring in customers that dont mind spending extra money on nice coverage. Also please keep in mind that $800 cell phones are nothing new (yes for a new contract) but even then, $1000 phone "should" be much less then $800 for a new contract. I could see 400 or 600 dollars on it. Please keep in mind we live in a age where people dont just want whats best, they want whats new and what not many people have. This will allow ALOT of people to get a very nice phone that not many people have. This being said, if it follows in the foot steps of the iphone then yeah it is half over, but if they keep up with new and interesting upgrades to the phone and apps then this should be a hot item and makes me pray the company i work for comes out with something competitve very soon.

soo let me get this straight, imma going to pay $1000 for a tablet that can NOT run full blown mac software, can only run custom iPAD apps, that can for now run small quick and dirty ipod touch or iphone apps or even games without a decent separate controller pad hmmmm...

nothing to see here folks im TRULY DISAPOINTED, this bondogle will bury apple. if the ipad comes with a cellphone connection and document transfer via email ala kindle and uses carrier subsidies to fund this thats also a big disapointment.
the ideal pricepoint for this thing should be between $350-500 if it goes beyond that then well godbye mainstream and hello cheap windows tablet clones. this will end up being a niche product no more no less.
