OLPC XO 1.5 gets the FCC's seal of approval
We've been seeing the OLPC XO 1.5 out in the wild for quite a few months now, but it looks like it's just now finally cleared the all-important FCC hurdle. Unfortunately, most of the details beyond the basic formalities are being kept under wraps for the time being (along with any pictures, internal or otherwise), but we have heard previously that it packs a faster VIA C7-M processor, along with an upgraded VX855 chipset to better handle things like 3D graphics and HD video. It is also something of a stopgap measure, however, with the real upgrades seemingly planned for the ARM-based OLPC XO 1.75 -- which itself will supposedly be followed by the OLPC XO 3.0 sometime in 2012.

iPad.
@ROFL : sadly, this is better than the iPad in every respect.
I bet it has USB ports.
iPad 1.5 already? Now with the ability to have 1.5 programs running at one time!
"Unfortunately, most of the details beyond the basic formalities are being kept under wraps for the time being..."
Mysterious yet not sexy. Hmm.
Is there any word on the impact these are making. I'd like to hear that there's a good penetration rate, but I really haven't heard much about it.
Maybe Apple could have used the same PixelQi screen technology for its recently announced iPos, then maybe it could actually be serious as an e-reader.
Everyone is moaning about the lack of multitasking, camera or Flash on the iPad... isn't the lack of e-ink or similar technology a much bigger deal for a device that's supposed to revolutionize everything from textbooks, to fiction, to daily papers?
Oh, I forgot, they have to leave something cool to debut in iPad 2.0 because, let's face it, the first-gen iPad already has enough innovative and drool-worthy features.
Is anyone else seeing a face in the picture? A very sad, distressed face?
@carsonb LOL. It's no worse than the startled face that appears in all North American electrical sockets, at least.
@carsonb
look at it upside-down :D
Children in 3rd world countries will not accept this unless it has multitasking.
@TheGM It does. And it has flash.
i like how after all the iPad articles have been milked, there are very few reports on other devices, still love engadget though, lets just hear something about a tablet that can change the world without being magical
Y'know, that kinda looks like an Apple product. Makes me want to read more about the iPad.
What is a droid n what is a nexus ?
Hmmmh
The details are most certainly not being kept secret. There are fairly detailed specs along with images on the OLPC wiki: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XO-1.5
Development units have been going around publicly for quite a while.
The author is wrong about naming the XO-1.5 a stopgap measure since 1.5 is planned to remain as an offering even after the ARM based 1.75 starts shipping.
The 1.5 will be the x86 compatible (but relatively power-hungry) offering of OLPC, while the XO 1.75 will be the ultra-low power, non-x86 offering.
