Hey, remember back when Steve Jobs said "
people don't read anymore" when discussing why the
Kindle would be a failure? Heh, funny story: turns out Apple just released a device called the iPad and,
at its unveiling, spent an awful lot of time showing off what a great reader it is. However, when comparing it to Kindle (
as we did here) you have to think about that battery life figure: 10 hours vs.
seven days. When Walt Mossberg caught Jobs after the unveiling for a little gonzo-style interview he asked about this, and Jobs said "you're not going to read for 10 hours...you just end up pluggin' it in." So, Steve now concedes that people
do read, but apparently they don't do it for long without coming close to a power receptacle. When asked about price differentials between books on the devices, rumored to be as much as
$5 more than on Kindle, Jobs somewhat reluctantly states that "publishers are actually withholding books from Amazon because they're not happy," and that "the prices will be the same" -- but doesn't indicate whether Amazon's prices will be going up or that rumored $14.99 price point is going down. It's all in the video after the break, including plenty of face time with Walt.

Did your grandma recently have a liver transplant as well?
Sure....right after Apple had their most successful Q ever. What could be more out of touch than that!!!!!! LOL
@brown like dookie: for $1 salary, he can't afford new ones.
Good day, I'm in love with my Nexus One - superphone ( just updated yesterday -OTA- its so much better now about the 3G signal & more faster charging time ) - we still have the 2g iphone & 3gs but were using it as MP3 player in our cars - 09 RIDGELINE & 09 PILOT -
I called my friend who's working on HTC in Houston - (he's senior engineer-the best guy to ask about software & phones) ( USA-HTC repair center is in Houston,Texas ) he divulge something to me. We moved from California for GOOD - he worked with APPLE before & myself with Honda R&D and now we are in Texas ( hes in Houston, I'm in the best city in the USA - AUSTIN,TEXAS).
Here's the big scoop guys, GOOGLE wants some share on HTC board & they will invest in the company for more products to be made by HTC for them, like the ultra advance tablet & more advance phones that is way better than the so called OLD TECHNOLOGY iPAD& iPHONE, who are just good in aesthetic appearance with APPLE logo on it ( i'll bet all my money that whatever piece of crap they will make, people will buy it because of the name APPLE )
BUT if it is EMACHINES that even can do anything & will make your life easy and happy, still people will not buy it because its EMACHINE, people did you get it??? WAKE UP!!!
Thats all for now...
Take care buddies & gurlies...

Bring on the onslaught of android devices with Pixel Qi screens. I want an e-reader/tablet that won't destroy my eyes. While not quite as good as true e-ink, the transflective appear to be a great compromise between e-ink and a color LCD. The fact that they will use less than 1/2 a watt with the backlight off (and still be super readable/usuable) is only an added bonus.

@thehomelessguy
Meh, next year's iPad will be sooo much better. I love comparing fantasy products.
Ive read more than 10 hours strait except for stopping to eat for about a total of and hour for all three meals. It was actually to be exact from 8 am to 11pm
Wait, what's an iPad? I haven't seen any coverage whatsoever from any gadget site.
You can listen to music while reading email or browsing on the iPhone, so you can definitely do it on an iPad...
@liuping
Sorry, my reply did not go in the correct place...
@Jonathan Ive
Magically excessive.
Still, I think the screen will look incredibly bright with great view angles...but reading on a LCD screen (and with LED, at that) is and will continue to be a horrible experience.
Hahaha this is the most ridiculous thing I have read yet so far. First, I don't know where you get off saying that this company has had a bad 10 year run with Steve Jobs. Does the fact that they right now have a surplus of 15.4 Billion dollars not even matter? Come on guy, get real. Second, I'm not knocking that you have a MP3 player that you enjoy, but don't excuse the reality that "that" iPod is virtually everywhere. That goes with the iPhone as well so pretty much not an epic fail. And the only reason companies like Dell will always be bigger and be more profitable than any Apple is because it's just a shell. I guess I'll explain since you obviously don't understand, you can get everything you can in a Dell as you can in a Toshiba, HP, Acer... Shall I go on? Where as with a Mac it's a completely different OS (Operating system) that works great and just about everything in the computer is by Apple. I guess your Apple Hater Shades are so dark it's hard for you to accept that they are extremely successful.
Taking the floppy drive out and replacing it with a USB port was a brilliant idea. It's wasted space and everything that can be done with a floppy disk can be done with USB. Jobs was smart to do it and was making a statement. You don't NEED a floppy drive. Look at how many times you use a floppy disk now, not so much an epic fail anymore? OS X huge success. Any Windows OS, epic fail. Why is it that every time Windows comes out with a new OS they continue to sell the old one?
The rest of your jibber jabber is so pointless that I won't even talk about it. Point is you can hate a person and a company that's fine, but don't highlight it's most successful products because that just makes you look ignorant.
@KillTheApex breathe buddy.....I was being sarcastic. I was illustrating the successful run Apple is on in a manner that would be entertaining and not obnoxious. Do really think I'm pining for floppy drives and SCSI peripherals again?
@JK11
Yeah... I thought about that after I posted that. Sorry man. I've been reading so many articles on Apple the past few days I read this and thought surely not. My mistake!
@brown like dookie
hah..
"It makes you wonder if it's the same shirt and jeans, or if he's got a closet the size of your house with hangers as far as the eye can see - all with that stupid black turtleneck hanging from each one."
Maybe he's actually really superstitious and that's his "lucky" outfit that he wears because it helps mean the products he shows will be a success.
@Captain Planet Planeteer Power
Haha good pic thats what I thought all along
can you say hypocryte?
Kindle and eBook readers in general sucks. $250 just to read books. No thanks, a real book costs me about $10-$20. Anyone with half a brain knows that you can buy roughly ~20 real books for $250. Why am I buying a device that has only black/white (whereas some books have color illustrations and such) and paying $250 for 0 books to start?
The iPad? Already comes preinstalled with Mail, Safari, iPod music player, video player, calendar, notes, etc. AND it reads eBooks.
$250 for ONE function (and you go back 50 years to black and white only)
or
$500 for a web browser, mail app, 3G modem, WiFi tablet, multi touch, AND 140,000 apps (most of free). I'm not hating on the Kindle or any other eBook reader, I also think that the iPad has a few huge flaws, no flash, no multi tasking, no Pixel Qi screen, no camera, etc. But it's a better deal than paying $250 just for a book reader. Hell, I can spend $10 bucks on a book right now and read it now. I don't need no stupid book reader to read books.
@jckchn
You are totally right. While I am not a fan of the ipad because it is amazingly limited, it is, compared to an ereader, a better value in some respects. Though its probably not a very good ereader since it's locked down to itunes and expensive books, I think a device that has a color screen, runs applications, plays videos, etc is more likely to be worth the few hundred buck than an ereader.
BUT, with an ereader, you are not paying for flexibility. You're paying for a special kind of display. Those buyers must really like the mild quality of the epaper, and that's what they pay the premium for. Kindle with an LCD would be cheaper than Kindle as it is.
I'm happy with a laptop or netbook, though.
@Rem DX
Maybe he has some kind of scar on his neck and arms.
He's had some vague health problems. He's a brilliant man and he can actually pull of that dumb outfit if he wants. I have never bought a product oh his I wound up totally satisfied with, but I respect Jobs all the same.
Steve Jobs is right. I own a Kindle, and have never read it for 10 hours straight....not even close.
People please don't get confused the device is not a tablet. A tablet has multitasking, an actual os, flash, a camera, and doesn't cost $499. I can get a netbook with slot more features from 200-400 with 160GB HD or more for less. Apple this is another FAIL added to the list. Don't forget the iPod shuffle, iPod touch 3rd gen and apple tv. An epic fail. He was excited about this device? Seriously? After all the crap he talked about e-books.
I meant a lot of more features. I hate when this iPhone makes the Auto correction. I wish I had multi-task, camera flash, and t-mobile. The world would be so much better
10 hours compared to 7 DAYSof battery life...hmmm...oh I forgot it has fruit on the back and makes your eyes bleed. Steve must be right.
@JK11
You can love or hate Apple, but their earnings report and stock price history contradicts everything you just said.
I like the iPad. It's just media and people in their imagination have grown such a "tablet", which could wake you up in the morning, wash sox, be a tv, a computer and... and... Actually Apple didn't even say that they are doing something. iPad will be a success. A next step. It doesn't make phone calls, no Flash... Hey, this just a beginning. I'm sure at the middle of this year some hacker will come up with some program which enables phone calls, Skype etc, etc via bluetooth headphones. And later on 2nd generation Apple will make something official.
Steve Jobs and other people at Apple did a great thing (as always). When it comes I'll buy it for my brother. I don't need it at the moment :)
He is to old, weak & sick. should be retired now. this stupid iPad is a hard proof of that.
@Jonathan Ive
I will clarify, his Job is to ensure his company puts out quality product, instead he gives us larger versions of existing items while touting that the device is still revolutionary, he's great at giving the masses what they think is a good product, instead he is overcharging for what is essentially a large itouch/ e-reader, the e-reader aspect being quite disappointing, i did not mean to make a trollish comment i am sorry. I was looking forward to this device in fact, knowing that apple has all the resources to make a great product, but sadly i feel like in 6 months we will get this device with a faster processor, without an upgrade option
@Jonathan Ive I just wanna ask you: Where's the CAMERA???
You gotta admit, the Kindle has a much better battery life. But I was not expecting 10 hours of battery life. I thought something with a faster processor and larger screen would be lucky to get a better battery life than the iphone. Jobs kinda sounds like a douche though. Thou shalt not read more than 10 hours unless Jobs wills it!!
Ha ha - "Poor Apple for releasing a product to such pessimistic reception", "iPad sucks, " " It´s not a gamechanger", blah, blah,blah...
Apple does it´s thing and is only marginally fueled by all "wanna-be-tech-writers that fill every comment thread with their personal problems in the form of harsh critisizm of everything Apple. Of course they´re tryiing to make it seem like they know what they´re talkin g about.
This can be cute in 23 post or something, but in 280 or 511 post it gets boring. Boring.
Go out, play. Play with friends or kids and put a smile back on your faces. You deserve it = )
Truth is, blogs and tech-sites write a lot about it, because they know it's gonna earn them lots of visitors. And they're right about that of course.
And they know that these topics are going to raise great participation from all of us who enjoy arguing about these things.
Ass for the ipad, I still have not found any use for it for myself or anyone I know. Business still means MS Office for most, so the iPad is out of question. Buying it for your mom/dad/grandma who knows nothing about such devices will lead you to this: They will be asking you to upload photos and videos they like to watch. Then you will have to deal with codecs and buy all the extra stuff to connect it to your own laptop...so what's the good thing in buying it for them? Buy them a digital photo viewer, there are some nice ones' with good screens and video support.
Good day,
I'm in love with my Nexus One - superphone ( just updated yesterday -OTA- its so much better now about the 3G signal & more faster charging time ) - we still have APPLE products like macbook pro & ipod touch for my daughter then 2g iphone & 3gs but were using it as MP3 player in our cars - RIDGELINE & PILOT -

BUT if it is EMACHINES or any brand that even can do everything & will make your life easier and happy, still people will not buy it because its EMACHINE or not a popular name...
People did you get it??

Interesting and very related to what Jobs mentioned:
"Amazon Pulls Macmillan Books Over E-Book Price Disagreement"

the best round up ever !

See, I think Steve Jobs said all the wrong things in this interview. Instead of pretending that a fundamental flaw (lower battery life due to a bright LED display) is a non-issue, he really should have focussed on its other strengths.
"It's all about the screen: the chips we use consume very little power."
"Well, that's the key: you're doing an E-book reader that isn't using E-ink, it's using a beautiful LED colour display and there is a battery deficit because of that."
What S.J said: "You know, there isn't, because you just end up... plugging it back in."
What S.J should have said: "The thing is, this isn't an E-reader. It's a tablet with E-reading capabilities. With an E-reader, you read books on it, but then you have to go to something else to listen to music, browse the web or send an E-mail. You have to manage your music and E-mail separately from your books. With this, that's not an issue."
That's how I would have marketed it, anyway.
When is the last time Jobs took a road trip? There are times you can read for more than 10 hours.
@lividmonkey
Sometimes I think people are just not paying attention. The iPad is NOT AN E-READER. You would get a Kindle because you want to read books, right? You would get an iPad because you want to do MORE than read books. It's great if you want to spend 10 hours reading, but some people would like to spend 10 hours WRITING, or playing games, or surfing the web or doing any number of other things that the iPad can do but the Kindle can't.
Get it now?
@Jack I was commenting on Jobs's statement on how people won't read for 10 hours, not the capability of the iPad. A little quick to defend the little toy, eh Jack? The article was about his statement, not the mystical, life-giving wonders of the iPad. I guess you weren't paying attention, though.
@Jonathan Ive and @SteveJobsCEO
That has to be the funniest comment+follow-up I've ever read on Engadget. Nice!
Jobs said "you're not going to read for 10 hours..."
What a pretentious, arrogant schmuck. There are many times in a month that I'll read for more than 10 hours in one sitting. Fortunately, I get more than 14 hours between charges on my 2003 Tapwave Zodiac.
Once iPad (oh wait, Fujitsu owns that trademark) users listen to music (which they can't while they read), watch a movie, browse the web, etc. - how much power will be left. Not enough to lay in bed and read before going to sleep.
@strommsarnac
I think you're missing the point. He means that his target market isn't going to read for 10 hours. If you are going to read for more than 10 hours, this product isn't the reader for you. Buy an E-reader. Better, buy the hardback book.
Thing is, I'm still stuck on who exactly their target market is with this thing. Is it a mum in the kitchen product? Is it a college kid product? =/
@Jonathan Ive
Stop reading it then.. get over yourself.
@SteveJobsCEO After reading many of the 'day after the launch' articles – I have had time to reflect on why I would want this device. I am a heavy iPhone user – mostly the apps. – so to now have the opportunity to go for a major screen size increase – with all the familiarity of the iPhone – well that becomes the ticket I will buy for sure. However,I wish they would have included a web camera for Skype. ...Details: http://bit.ly/apple-tablet-under-fire
how about if we change is to "fanboi"...it gives the sense of ignorance as well...
This is going to be a hit product.
I have been looking for a product for mom to use.
I was already to build a netbook hackentosh because I don't want the hassles of Windows and supporting her all the time.
Here is a better solution at roughly the same price.
Yes, it doesn't have any real storage, but she won't need that much.
She doesn't have an internet connection, so the unlocked 3G will take care of that.
Plus, any problems, she takes it to the Apple store.
Now the family will be in more direct contact with pictures and email.
Apple has always been innovative but overpriced (remember the iPhone refunds...) This product looks well thought out with the right wallet threshold.
Look, I work on PC's every day and have built peripherals for them for many years. The Mac, is just simpler to use with a lot less hassles.
I bought my wife a Mac notebook a couple of years ago for an anniversary present and she still continues to thank me for it.
I personally cannot wait to personally try the iPad and put it through its paces.
