HP slips out stylish, Core i3-based G62t laptop
It may be in the same family as HP's budget-minded G60 laptop, but the company's new G62t model has more in company with the high-end Envy 15 in terms of appearance, and that's certainly alright with us. Equally respectable are the laptop's specs, which include a standard Core i3 processor (upgradable to Core i5 or i7), 3GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a 15.6-inch LED-backlit display, and a DVD burner (upgradable to Blu-ray if you like). The biggest downside is the non-upgradeable integrated Intel HD graphics -- but with a starting price of $699 (and plenty of HP coupons floating around), we're guessing plenty of folks will be willing to accept that slight drawback.

Looks like a MacBook Pro to me.
@Quu Agreed.
@Quu I usually hate these "it looks like" comments, but g'damn it does! Way to be original HP. *rolleyes*
@Quu
Now go their website and look at the $599 asking price. Doesn't look like a MacBook Pro anymore.
@viper24. How does price change what it looks like?
@Quu
And there's really nothing wrong with that, it just means it's a nice looking laptop.
@viper24 touche' xD
and actually, if you flip it around it looks like the lid is all graphicy, signature HP. hopefully its not also a HP signature fingerprint magnet!
@Quu: YES AND?????
The macbook has a nice slick design what's wrong with using that design in a different product that's much more affordable too? Geez.
@Quu
It does not matter if it "looks like" a Macbook Pro, am glad that HP is making stylish laptops. The more PC companies adopt a more stylish laptop design the better for all of us to have cool looking devices at great prices.
@Quu
Except the Macbook Pro is *still* only sporting a core 2 duo. Ouch!
@broli It's ok to use Apple's design. But, it also reflects HP Design Team's lack of creativity, and incompetence in creating new, and equally attractive design on top of affordability.
It's an affordable macbook clone. Just like that iPhone clone in China.
@broli
It would just be nice if it looked different to a design that has already been in the market since late 2008 that's all. Innovation is good for the market.
@Quu Shouldn't this be on the KIRF section?
@Quu
I could live with that If I had one..
@Ducman69
I hope that pattern on the metal is not a dirt magnet. I don't care about fingerprints in regard to the dirt. Anyway, neat looking machine.
@Quu
i wonder if its really an aluminum chasis...
aluminum just screams win.
@Quu Yeah agreed, have to say it does look good though.
@viper24 zing!!
@Quu Actually, HP envy was noticed in such a way like what a macbook portrays. Following the article, I think this laptop is more sweet than the envy. Details: http://bit.ly/hp-envy-is-worth-it
Especially when the prices lands at a 650 spot.
@Quu
My words exactly!!!
@Quu The HP G62t model has respectable specs, too: a 2.13GHz Core i3 processor, a 160GB hard drive, 3GB of DDR3 RAM, a 15.6-inch (1366 x 768) LED display, DVD burner, and three USB 2.0 ports. It's also upgradeable to a Core i5 or i7 CPU. More details and pricing: http://bit.ly/hp-g62t-details
I hate to draw this comparison. But it does look at bit like a unibody macbook pro. I mean come on hp! Not bad specs though. Blu-ray burner, that's pretty neat
That looks strikingly similar to a MacBook pro....disappointing,..
@RUGRLN
Where hav you been? The envy series is pretty much a carbon copy of a mbp.. But with this, even the ports in the side look strikingly familiar.
On a side note, my little brother has an old centrino hp lap, with one of those best buy replacement plans. Are they pretty much all upgraded to the i3/5/7 series now, or should I have him keep waiting on a replacement?
@The Dead Marxist Trio
lol, maybe that is why HP calls it the ENVY series. Envy is running deep in HP of Apple's Laptop line. lol
What's the point of integrated Intel HD graphics, when the Core i3-5-7 chips already have a CPU integrated graphics chip?
@enstriel The i7 does not have integrated graphics.
And I thought thats what they meant by Intel HD integrated graphics, the one on the chip. From a TDP standpoint, this is a very efficient setup, and even though integrated graphics suck, the built in one is supposed to be a big step up.
Not all of the Core ix series have integrated graphics on the same chip. Well, at least not the desktop versions. I don't really know regarding the mobile chips.
Perhaps it's so Intel doesn't get slapped with an anti-competitive clause, since an on-board Intel graphics chip across all CPU models would basically kick out ATI and Nvidia.
@Ducman69
The i7 Quads don't have IHDG.
This uses the dual core i7 which do.
@Elranzer
Currently, dual core CiN chips have integrated GPUs, quads do not.
This goes for mobile and desktop.
Jonathan Ive, come out and give us your opinion on the design of this laptop
Clearly without Jonathan Ives we would still be using beige boxes
The 160GB hard drive is a glaring sub-spec, it should be equipped with a 250GB HDD out of the gate.
@To Hell It's equipped with a 320GB out of the box as far as I can see. If you downgrade it to 160GB it saves you 70 dollars.
Nice specs & it's not overpriced.
@CJ100570
Beg to differ; one can get a better-spec'd core-i3 laptop for $549. I'd reveal where these deals are, but I don't want a run on them while I ponder whether to get this or a core-i5 laptop for $699.
Just wish they would quit the tacky laser detailing!
Pretty.
@BigPete
I don't know. I'm a bit put off by how flashy they try to make their laptops look. It's a bit obnoxious and the touchpads generally end up being annoying to use.
The mention of similarity to the Envy line is so far lost on most of the commenters here. We've been through this "look like a certain laptop from a certain shall-not-be-named company" song and dance before now kiddies.
That said, it does look rather nice, but I still think I'll pass. I've been really drawn to the dm3 as of late. I'm looking for something smaller than my asstastic dv6000 that continues to cling to life despite all logical reasoning
Here's what annoys me. I was just spec'ing this out and was really considering ordering... but 1366 x 786 display on a 15.6-inch!? Come on. They need some higher res display options.
@Joshua Topolsky I like seeing the engadget editors commenting more! :)
@werty1432k yayy.. this is how it needs to be done... editors need to comment more
@Joshua Topolsky
By the way it gets much cheaper if you deselect f*cked up Norton Antivirus!
@Joshua Topolsky
Hey Joshua, Please is there a way you could post back the Core i7 Story for the HP Touchsmart 600 Series so I can get some input as to what makes the Core i7 worth the extra $300. Or Could you yourself help me?
I want to buy one this weekend but don't see why the Core i7 which number wise is slower than 2.66GHZ C2D, is worth so much.
Thanks
@Joshua Topolsky Appreciate the editors commenting as well...
@Joshua Topolsky
Here's a dilemma. Should I buy this with my Employee Price discount or should I upgrade my desktop gaming rig.
@Joshua Topolsky
Here's a dilemma. Should I buy this with my Employee Price discount or should I upgrade my desktop gaming rig?
@Joshua Topolsky How 2004 of HP. I wonder why they did that?
@Zaro27 How bad do you need a laptop? I'm pretty into the mobility, personally.
