HP slips out stylish, Core i3-based G62t laptop
It may be in the same family as HP's budget-minded G60 laptop, but the company's new G62t model has more in company with the high-end Envy 15 in terms of appearance, and that's certainly alright with us. Equally respectable are the laptop's specs, which include a standard Core i3 processor (upgradable to Core i5 or i7), 3GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a 15.6-inch LED-backlit display, and a DVD burner (upgradable to Blu-ray if you like). The biggest downside is the non-upgradeable integrated Intel HD graphics -- but with a starting price of $699 (and plenty of HP coupons floating around), we're guessing plenty of folks will be willing to accept that slight drawback.

@Joshua Topolsky
thats what the real Envy is for, this thing is budget.
@Joshua Topolsky
well if you remember not long ago for a 15 inch monitor the best resolution was 800x600 so i guess this resolution is fair for this screen.. I believe we have been a bit spoiled with the resolutions. This doesn't mean the pixel density on my SE X1 isn't awesome !! :)
@Joshua Topolsky: The MacBook Pro 15 isn't that much higher (1440x900). In fact, for the price the MBP 15 is, thats kind of embarrassing that it isn't running 1680x1050 at minimum.
Remember, this is a really cheap laptop (considering the styling is actually eye-catching for an HP). I wouldn't expect too much better that 720ish P. If the base price were in the $1000 range, then you have yourself an argument.
@Joshua Topolsky
Sorry, but the MBP 15's 1440*900 then gets a free pass? :o
I only wish i could put OSX on it and give it to my my wife. Instead I'll have to dish out 1700 for a Mac :(
@mango
What makes you think you can't?
@mango : Astounding is right. Ever since Apple chose to move from PowerPC processors to Intel based ones, there has been a whole community that's been putting Mac on everyday PC hardware.

Just do a youtube search for it... won't take you long to find proof.
@mango Just put a Leopard wallpaper on there and taskbar skin on W7, and she'll be happy.
optical drive?
@chodaboy19, found that weird it wasn't a slot drive.
looks like a good deal to me for that price.. i mean even the plastic fruit costs $999
That looks really good, some downfalls as mentioned, needs higher res, needs more battery options. I'd jump on this, speced out similar to my currently laptop, it's cheaper, if they only have the higher res my laptop has.
Thank God they made good looking laptop with acceptable keyboard layout and design "a la MacBook Pro". Waiting for configurations with discrete graphics...
I've been looking at HP laptops to buy for a few weeks now, and have heard bad things about the DV series even though the specs are great for me. Anyone had any good or bad experience with the HP DV series?
Just a note about an order I placed last week. By adding in a $10 coupon I found online, it meant I didn't get my $76 in bing cashback.
I am sorry to do this, but I honestly need some input on this. Yesterday Engadget posted that the Core i7 Processors can now be had on the HP Touchsmart 600 Series of All-in-One PC's. My question though is, given how much the starting price is (1,699) for the base Core i7, 1.6GHZ I believe, would't it be best cost wise to just stick with the faster Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHZ at 1,375 ( HPA Price - Full Spec'd), or could you guys please explain the benefits of the Core i7 to warrant me spending an extra 325 for the basic specs.
Thanks
@SetThemStraight
The i7 is a quad core, if you plan to do anything with video beside just watch it, spend the extra money. If not, don't.
@jon
How about for gaming, does that count?
@SetThemStraight
They both have the same GPU, so that's a wash.
Most games can't use more than 2 cores, that will change, but hasn't yet.
If you're planning on using this thing a a lot for three years, I'd go with the Quad. If you're gonna replace it in 12 months, save the money.
At this point, Quads are mostly for multitasking, and video editing/transcoding.
Remember, this chip can turbo up to 2.8GHz when only one core is running. I don't have the 2 core numbers.
@jon
I do plan on having it for a while. But I guess I will just get the Quad Core 1.6GHZ then. Just to be certain, it's the quad that goes to 2.8GHZ on one core or is it the C2D? Thanks You have been quite helpful.
@SetThemStraight
The Quad can go to 2.8GHz running one core.
C2Ds don't have Turbo Boost.
Also, just to make you feel better, remember that Nahelem based chips are around 10-20% more powerful clock for clock than C2Ds.
No problems, that's what I'm here for.
14.72"(W)x 9.70"(D)x 1.25"(min H)/1.44"(max H)
So its almost 1.5" thick. A macbook pro is .95" thin. So this HP is more like a cheap fat macbook pro.
I'd rather go with the Envy.
Agreed with CJ100570. Nice specs and not overpriced.
This is a macbook thick and cheap, looks good I might pick one of these up if I wasn't a poor college student right now.
Looks very familiar to me, I just can't put my apple on it...
So what coupon can I use with this model? I haven't found one that works. :(
@jaleman Hint: click the Via link.
Who cares if it looks something else? I love the way it looks and that's all I care. Certainly, much better than looking ugly. I'd buy one if I hadn't bought one recently.
any updates about the Envy 14 or is it just another rumour???
This is totally a KIRF of a Macbook Pro
With a bigger gpu (5650, you're my friend !) it would have been perfect for me ! Saddly, this low price macbook pro look-a-like is coming with a little intel chip... Anyone hear about new hp laptop that comes with this price and look, but with a better graphic card ?
"[hp] invent." They sure did.
Does anyone know if this has a backlit keyboard? Did HP totally kill off its backlit keyboard option? I don't see it available anymore for any of their laptops. And more photos of this laptop? There's very little info on the HP site. Links anyone? Thanks!!
Absolutely a MacBook Pro look alike. So... Yeah it looks awesome! I love my mac, but this thing has better specs and is much cheaper too. Apple should take not of some of their flatters and kick the specs up a few notches and knock the pricing down a few notches. But it is difficult to be green these days and people are willing to pay the premium price for the honor. I could care less about being green, I just want a durable, powerful, easy to carry notebook. So to each his/her own I guess...
Yeah, it's a MacBook Pro look-alike, I'm over that now - the deal breaker for me is that there's no none-intel GPU option. With that price point, of course, there has to be a catch. Well, there it is.
Gfx card FAIL.
This could have been a dream with a decent gfx card.
Looks just like the envy series which looks like the macbook pro, at least on this model it doesnt cost more than the macbook.
Read around here for a long time but finally decided to give away a few days of my life in these comments!
It does look like a MBP but then the MBP looked like other laptops when it came out as well. What sets it apart is the materials used and the unibody enclosure, something no other manufacture can rival at the minute.
Good specs, good price but you expect that from PC manufactures, they compete for that type of market.
I'd absolutely love to upgrade my current, very outdated, Dell Inspiron 6400 to this. It looks gorgeous. And good relatively good specs, too!
Why do they have to gimp this laptop so much? This is far more aesthetically pleasing then their other 15in laptops yet the specs are the most disappointing. I've seriously contemplated buying at least 3 different HP models in the past year but they always have at least one stupid feature ( junk track pads, ugly swirls on them, glossy keyboards and cases) that makes me decide not to purchase them.
