Motorola 'jumped the gun' with details of Droid's Android 2.1 update
Turns out all that excitement and frothing at the mouth was for nothing, as Motorola's surprisingly nippy move to Android 2.1 on the Droid isn't going to be all that rapid after all. The Moto Owners' Forum manager has admitted that a few trigger-happy souls rushed out the details of the Droid's upcoming OS update ahead of time, and the current situation is quite as it was before this news: your Droid will be chomping down on an Eclair, just not as soon as you might have been led to hope. The original source of the belief that the update will be hitting this week was Moto's Facebook page, but PC Mag's sleuthing has revealed that the position has now changed to "soon" over there as well. Patience is a virtue, eh?

In this case especially, why wouldn't you delete the thread?
God I hate forums!
@BUNT2 Nah, that'd cause more crap..
It'd probably kick off the striesand effect, and cause them much more cap than just owning up and saying "Look... We ballsed up.. sorry :("
That said.. Gz to Moto for having balls enough to come right out and say it.
@geekthree

@BUNT2 It was probably all a publicity stunt and all the blogs fell for it.
Man, I unrooted my phone and EVERYTHING! Sigh...
I don't get why they don't just give us an ETA. Sure, it upsets people when you push it back but at least we have a day to look forward to. The light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. But to just make us chase a carrot endlessly is a bit tiring.
I bet they only did what they did in order to keep all the people from incessantly spamming them in regards to the update.
@Cizzo
It's still starting to trickle out this week, read what the guy said. They just didn't want the notes out there until it starts... hence why they removed them.
@Cizzo It sucks when the light at the end of the tunnel is a train....
@Cizzo It's likely they don't really control the ETA. Verizon does.
Gee how'd I guess, a fake...
So maybe in 2011... Perhaps I better get the Nexus one then...
Personally, I think Moto jumped the gun to stop discussion on whether or not the Droid is getting multi-touch. This way, we atleast know that its coming, when it comes, even if its late...
Keeps the would-be Droid shoppers from buying a Nexus One... :)
*Doh!
Hoping they testing the whole 2.1 on the Droid. Praying!!
off topic, bacuse it's not more post about MM
Moto Motoroi will come in to the US ? with android 2.1 ?
They changed the details on the Facebook page too?
That kind of sucks, but on the other hand I did just root, install Sholes mod, and overclock, so I don't care too much.
aww man! not cool!
Great, so... PC Mag called Moto support and they didn't know the details about the update... surprise surprise(because the support people always know...EVERYTHING lol). Meanwhile over at Motorola's Facebook page the ONLY opinion by motorola is that it will be out this week... Since I actually communicated with Matt (from the Moto forums) to find out his comment was only about the details of the features listed.... I still hope the update is this week;
.
"I agree. Matt, your comment was unclear. What exactly was premature? The details of WHAT WILL BE INCLUDED in 2.1 or the fact that 2.1 is COMING THIS WEEK?"
Matt: "I did clarify my original comment here -- easy to miss. I was only speaking about the notes. And since my information about those was so bad, please excuse me if I make no additional comments. I'm just really sorry that my error resulted in bad feelings for some Droid owners."
Is 2.1 coming to the Droid this week or not??"
Okey doke, time to root then... *sigh*
@jamo
This is a serious question, but what is the purpose of rooting the droid? Also, if I was interested in rooting, what do people recommend when rooting (website, etc)?
@Rick James
Here's a good site for beginners looking to root their Droid:
http://rootyourdroid.info/
Rooting allows you to install custom roms and add functions not normally allowed like wifi tethering for example. This site also explains the advantages of rooting in greater detail.
Hope this helps you.
Well, the purpose is to have basic admin rights to your phone. You can use roms that have many of the same features as 2.1, like home screens and multi touch. It's just putting 2.1 on your phone before Verizon and Motorola eventually one day get around to it.
@Rick James
Complete and utter control of the hardware. That's also the downside. Nothing to prevent you from absolutely bricking your phone.
Why do people do it? To customize the operating system and to overclock. People have reported stable operation up to twice the stock frequency.
@zakany
I'm fairly tech savvy, but it sounds like there is a good chance that doing this will void my warranty...
Anyone surprised, really? I mean we ARE talking about a Verizon phone here. At some point they will "test" all of these releases until the cows come home and meanwhile rooters and everyone else will be a few revisions ahead.
I guess it's time to root after all.
What an example of miscommunication there.
Moto...just add the app menu and the updated home screen to the Droid 2.1 release and I will forgive you for jerking us around! Deal?
lol, haha it must suck to be an Android user
@goatlover
Not at all. I would rather be stuck with Android 2.0 than with an iPhone.
Take your time Moto. Do 2.1 right please. I can wait.
Good for Moto to admit it, but that blows. And yeah, add 5 panels and the new app drawer and nobody gets hurt.
I think I have whiplash. :(
What will probably happen is that we'll have to wait longer and not get any of the additional features.
Im Calling Shenanigans!!!!
I am wondering if they are going to be adding the live wallpapers and flying app drawer.
There really is no reason to recant the update info if it was accurate. If it was going to be delayed, they could have just said that.
My guess is that they posted it, heard some complaints about the aforementioned features being absent, and are now adding them.
Or not. Just a guess, and a totally evidence-free one.
