TiVo has... something to announce March 2 in NYC

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Updated software and menus for all TiVo's. C'mon TiVo I know you can do it!
Maybe they're announcing the "screeching green screen crash" is expanding from its pilot run in NYC to a nationwide program.
Tivo's decline has made me sad.
Updated hardware, goddamn I love my Tivo but it is slow as hell.
More tuners never hurts although honestly it is pretty rare I need more than 2.
Tru2way or whatever so I can get OnDemand working.
Would be sweet if it had Hulu access too...
Also they typically allow you to transfer your lifetime subscription, I think I had to pay $100 last time to do so.
@Icehawk
Tivo extenders with no extra monthly fee would be better.
Not sure why you guys are expecting an updated DVR. If "inventing the DVR was just a warmup" this is going to be a revolutionary new DVR (wireless everything or 3D or something crazy) or, more likely, TiVo branching out into a new venture, like starting their own TV service.
About an improved DVR: my only problem with TiVo was they needed a remote where I can turn on/off my receiver, and maybe a bigger hard drive or a way to upgrade the hard drive.
TiVo buys Netflix.
@arkweld You have not considered market capitalization:
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=TIVO
vs.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=NFLX
In short, NetFlix's is 3x higher (as of today), so it is much to expensive for that buyout to be possible.
I have an old Panisonic unit made for replay I think that there were no Tivo's around when I bought my unit it only recorded 10 hours before I changed the hard drive oh yea I NEVER paid a dime for service. Just the price of the unit.
Merge TivoHD with HD Media Player (like OPlay/WDTV), top it up with XBMC and wolla you have an awesome one stop entertainment system.
Ofcourse faster processor and media streaming will help too!!
Lifetime TiVo + OTA = Great Success
Unless it's a quad tuner cablecard device with a UI that doesn't look like the 1990s, I don't care.
FiOSTV rocks on my Win7 MCE rig. It'd take an epic win from TiVO to get me to bend over for an additional monthly fee.
Here are my predictions:
1. Tivo will announce a new DVR that has 4 tuners and 1 TB internal storage.
2. They will officially announce a release date for the DirecTV Tivo DVR.
3. They will announce a newly enhanced Tivo user interface.
4. They will announce a cross licensing deal with Dish Network. Tivo gets Dish's slingbox technology (please!!!) and Dish gets to "legally" record one show while watching another. I know I'm dreaming, but a sling enabled Tivo would be sweet.
Tivo returns to the UK on Virgin cable? Oh wait, announcement in USA.. never mind..
I wish Virgin would hurry up and provide some more details.. It's been 8 long years, Tivo.. UK wants a new product *drool*
TiVO store to directly compete with iTunes and Apple TV.
I would love to just plug my cable into a TiVo without a CableCard or receiver in the middle. If TiVo can broker that deal with Xfinitycomcastthing I will be happy.
@Dale P : And a pony. Comcast should definitely give us a pony.
They're making a bigger version with less features.
@charlie x
iTivoPAD? :)
I love my TiVo... I'm hoping they release an improved UI, streamlined hardware, and better integration with web content.
What would it be? A drop in subscription price? A support for USB keyboard (to make YouTube searchable)? One can only hope :)
Wasn't aware people still used TiVo....
@Jaylittles531
My MythTV rig recorded a show on 90s tech last week. Tivo was in there.
iTablet! iTablet! iTablet!!!
DVR Just a WarmUp??
hmmm...total shot in the dark prediction here:
Social Bandwagon: Facebook and Twitter Integration
Web Browser (Firefox or Webkit)
Wireless Keyboard & Mouse
3D Built in
2-way cable (On Demand)
Now that we all have 1080p HDTV's it makes sense to bring webTV back...I can actually read text on my HDTV.
My predictions; New UI, New Media Center features with the ability to move the most popular file formats of your movies and tv shows from various sources to the TiVo, and a much broader integration/partnership with Netflix. Think, Boxee (hulu, youtube, socialnetnausium, etc) with a cablecard and DVR functionality with streaming Netflix.
holycrap what are they going to come out with now???? hahaha
My predictions:
-New UI
-New chipset allowing faster processing including faster transfers
-larger harddrive...figure the RCN model is supposed to come with 320gb
-also streams content
-New remote
-Official Hulu support and integration...recent facebook Tivo question and look where the announcement is points to this possibly
My wishes which probably won't come true
A Tivo Home Server with
-3+ tuners
-1TB standard
-cooperative scheduling
-true2way
One other longshot possibility.
Nero no longer sells liquidtv and Tivo has wanted out of the hardware business for years. Ceton will soon offer the hardware which would make this possible and the DRM is already supported by cable labs from Ceton, Windows, and Tivo. Also one of the Ceton testers recently got a new toy to play with but can't say what it is.
I doubt it will be a new DVR unless it's got some killer feature like being sling loaded. I would agree that it might be a TV service. Maybe there'll be an iTunes integration where you can purchase shows? It just seems like they're taking about a new service of some sort.
A UI refresh isn't out of the question, but I would think it would be in support of something else. Maybe it will bring Vudu integration? They've said they want to be on every device and not just their own.
I just hope they don't make a bad decision like trying to bring a new piece of hardware to market like a PMP that is made for TiVo or something like that.
Suggested feature for Tivo: allow me to change a given Season Pass's priority based on day of the week. To give an example of where this would be useful - Simpsons reruns play throughout the week, but the new episodes are on Sundays, so allow me to set it up where a given program can supersede Simpsons during the week if necessary, but on Sunday I want Simpsons to take priority. If the other show isn't on during the week then it's Simpsons as usual... You can call it Season Pass Thermostat.
Why is there not yet a commoditized DVR out there yet? I am looking for a basic DVR for recording over-the-air broadcasts. Paying a subscription seems so last decade to me.
will there be coverage of this event today somewhere?
Does anyone know if this is EST, PST?
BTW a couple weeks ago I received a letter from Cox saying they were discontinuing the use of cable cards or something to that effect (I've misplaced the letter, I can't remember exactly how it went) and that they worked with TiVo and that by march 18th I think it was that I had to pick up some kind of adapter unit from one of the Cox stores. Of course,I haven't picked it up yet, but this might have something to do with the announcement today I'm guessing...
I'm in Phoenix, AZ btw
