Near-final Pandora handhelds start shipping, proves that dreams really do come true
It's been over two solid years since we first caught wind of this here gaming handheld, and while we were initially led to believe that finalized units would be in the hands of emulation junkies long before now, we suppose loyalists are finding that late really is superior to never. After months and months of "almosts," the first wave of final Pandora handhelds are shipping out, with many community followers posting up unboxing shots as they come. We're also expecting a flood of homebrewed applications to start surfacing as more of these filter out, so be sure and drop us a line if you discover and / or create something otherworldly. Plenty more shots in the links below -- you know, if you're still patiently awaiting the arrival of your own.
[Thanks, Paul]
Update: A community member pinged us to say that these units actually aren't final in terms of the cases they're in. They're only being sent out now to a few members so "development [can begin] on actual Pandora hardware." Sigh.

@TareG which wouldn't emulate PS1...
@El Jefe
Pardon? Last I tried I could run PS1 games on my PSP perfectly. I'm sure that's just me being silly though.
@TareG
That's cool man. :-) They're different devices for different markets. PSP2/DS2 will give you a big catalogue of big budget games. Pandora gives you an open platform with an awesome dev community. Then there's phone gaming, another thing again. Horses for courses.
Epic Fail!
Hmm... I kinda wish it was a slide up screen. Game controls to the left and right side. Screen slides up for keyboard. I didn't see anything saying it had a touch screen. But I'd love that too.
None the less, quite awesome.
@Teslanaut The Pandora has a touch screen.
@Teslanaut That design (as well as the convertible tablet design) is patented, as it turns out. OpenPandora looked into all that when they started the design process.
I thought this came out in 2008, specs still better than most of today current competition
Looks like it fell out of the ugly tree and... cut it down, made a table, and eats off it every day.
@Tonezorz
What have you designed that competes with this?
I think it looks pretty good.
@(Unverified)
Whoa a little defensive much?
Since when do you have to create something to judge something else. Next time you think a girl is unattractive remember you can only judge her once you've had a daughter.
I would really like to use it for:
A mini PC/netbook (Email?)
Image saver for my DSLR, duplicate SD cards while out.
Game machine
Still waiting for Duke Nukem Forever.
damn, that thing looks fucked UP.
@jellotime91
how?
@atomicthumbs Look I'm sure it's incredibly awesome and the best gaming console ever created n all, but it is TOE UP UGLY AS HELL.
@jellotime91
how is it ugly
@atomicthumbs How are you replying to my comments? Because you must be blind to not think that thing is ugly. Like I said it could be friggin amazing but it's ugly as SIN.
@jellotime91
it's not ugly
Ok so I'm am idiot when it comes to this shit. Eithe way it seems like garbage to me. What is good here? A stupid toy. Impuned by nerds who think I'm stupid because I asked a question. Believe me j am not stupid. I do not know tech as well as some but the toy looks like a toy. Forgive me.
@Tangerinescream
I think Its Not Much Of A Toy Here... What Yo usee is the Pinacle of Modern Technology... Its More the Greater adavance than Penicillin...
1990 called, it wants its handheld back.
Would anybody be seen dead in plubic with that?
@Fat Wombat
Yep because I care more about function than I do about looks. One of the many reasons that the only apple product I own is the second gen ipod (back when ipods were good).
@coolblue2000 I believe in form and function which is why I will never buy an apple product. This is missing the form.
Handheld Dreamcast emulation?
I think I just came...
how about speeding it up. this thing is kind of slow by current and future standards. just slap a faster cpu inside
I LOVE the IDEA behind this device and would love to get the chance to mess around with one, but a lot of the advantages of this device seem to have disappeared over the 2 year development stage.
People that are looking for a mini-computer that can play some games yet has a full keyboard can now get a smartphone for less money. Then again, none of the phone companies have been smart enough to design their devices (especially Android devices) with actual GOOD keyboard or gamepad buttons.
@Hazdaz WRT no gaming controls on smartphones:
Phone companies are probably afraid of being seen as the next Ngage.
Looks like a Nintendo DS on ACID... =?
I'm ready.
Although I don't know for how much longer...
too late, I bought an Alienware M11X, the new handheld (almost)
The Pandora is a lie!
I figured that out years ago.
@chadwsmithcom I'll be playing Duke Nukem Forever on my Sega Dreamcast 2 powered holodeck before this thing ever ships.
