Garmin-Asus nuvifone M10 gets handled, reviewed in the wilds of Russia
We just heard about Garmin-Asus' WinMo 6.5.3-packin' M10 yesterday, and already the handset has been broken out for a photo shoot and hands-on review in Russia. The design itself isn't anything otherworldly, but we have to say -- we're kind of digging the user interface. Granted, we've a soft spot in our hearts for Garmin's nuvi line of PNDs, so anything remotely familiar gets a big thumbs-up 'round these parts. At any rate, critics noted that the phone was a pleasant mix of WinMo and nuvi, which is something that really sets it apart from other Windows Mobile-based offerings. There's nary a mention of exactly how awesome this thing would be with Windows Mobile 7, but if you're in no hurry to ponder the next big thing, give that source link a look.

Ok, wheres the Na'vifone
I don't mean to be off topic but why was there no daily round up yesterday? (02/11/2010) Or am I just blind?
@AlexSanchez
Just double checked, I'm not blind!
Where's what I could of missed?!
@AlexSanchez
People use that?
Doesn't everyone check engadget about 35 times a day (therefore not missing anything) like me?.....
Maybe I have a problem...
@geekthree
only 35?
@geekthree I check it anytime engadget is bold with a number next to it in my google reader.
@AlexSanchez Technical specs show the phone will have a 3.5 inch touchscreen, a 5 megapixel camera, wireless, GPS, bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSDHC card slot. The phone it’s self costs $450 (via Taiwan) and included in the price you also get an extra battery or the option of a car holder to prop the phone up when using navigation. What's with the chin-ornament? Is that going to be part of the phone or is that just for the showfloor?
@jhemperly
Hardcore GPS antenna?
Does every new phone coming out have to look almost exactly like an iPhone?
uhhhhhh..huh?
@Goto10 I know, i kind of like buttons...
@Goto10
The Nexus One is new and to me it does not look like an iPhone.
@1 Infinite Loop Cupertino CA
or Palm Pre, Droid, most HTC phones, and Blackberry. etc. lol
@Goto10
It's only copying if it's a Chinese company.
@Goto10
have you ever thought that maybe is the iPhone to look like any other phone?
@RonaldoMcDonaldo if it comes from any other country it can be called "magical" and "innovative" .
@RonaldoMcDonaldo
Or Indian, or Russian. Your point?
Wow! Wook at dat ting!
I can see russia from my house!
@IvanP91
Well played. :)
Why did it take so long for this phone to come out? I remember a prototype having been built and displayed at last years C.E.S. or something.
Oh cool, a phone with GPS on it. Neat!
@traceroute
Being Garmin GPS is "sort of a big deal" for some. For example the motorcycle group I belong to has a shared repository of Garmin route files for sweet rides in our area. Being able to use these files on my phone would reduce the devices I need by 1.
I think it looks pretty neat... can't wait to see a review.
@AckbarsFist
I like the way it looks as well, including the chin. It looks distinguished (a little). However, I just got a Touch Pro2, so I'm not looking.
I don't understand why people say things like. Why does everyone release phones that look like the iPhone.
If you make a touch screen smartphone with a 3.5 inch screen. About the largest size anyone is going to want to put into their pocket. Its rather limiting as to when is comes to design. You get a rectangle every time.
What did you expect a round smartphone?
@wenuell Its not just that. The chrome outer band the thin horizontal speaker up top, cmon it's fairly blatant. Don't even mention how the screens with apps on them look once turned on. I don't get the denial? Did smartphones look like this before the iPhone?
@Goto10 Well, before the iPhone, smartphones looked like the Treo 650 and BB 8300...
@wenuell It's one thing to be a touchscreen phone, the Instinct HD is a touchscreen phone, and so is the HTC Hero (Sprint). Neither look like an iPhone.
However, it's foolish to deny that there are plenty of phones that simply copy the iPhone. The black touchscreen with a silver bezel look was never so popular until iPhone blew up, and obviously companies like LG and Samsung look to see what's hot in the market. Were the a ton of finger-operated touchscreen QWERTY cellphones running around before iPhone? No. Give credit where it's due.
@Goto10
the NEC 9xx series phone back in 2005...
@JONNNathannn
Yes, give credit where credit is due. This is filtered for just the 2.8"+ touchscreens.

@JONNNathannn
Maybe Apple should have filed a patent for the black touchscreen with a silver bezel look. They patent everything else.
I really had to look at that for a while to register that it wasn't an iPhone.
the exterior looks like an iphone 2G... the bezel part and top mic mostly... not the bottom obviously...
In Soviet Russia the nuvifone navigates you.
@KAL326
Lol FAIL!
@KAL326
Lol FAIL!
Garmin tried to get me excited about this device about two YEARS ago!
How do they expect me to still care? -_-
@Ducman69
The phone announced 2 yrs ago was the G60 and was released months ago. The M10 phone was announced Q4 of 2009 with the Android phone A50. It will be released in the next few weeks in Asia. The A50 will be released 2Q in European countries.
I can finally recommend a phone for my friend from Newfoundland...
IMO Garmin did a very smart thing, they realized that standalone GPS devices are soon going to be obsolete so they release a phone/GPS.
Tomtom on the other hand, is pretty much stuck.
