So we were just casually strolling through Plaça d'Espanya today in front of Fira de Barcelona -- better known as the site of
MWC 2010 this coming week -- and we couldn't help but notice that Microsoft's digs at the Hotel Catalonia across the street had white stickers obviously covering something important underneath the Windows Phone logo that we'd
seen a few days ago. The ensuing conversation went something like this:
Chris: Dude, I think I see something there underneath the sticker. I think it says "SEVEN" in all caps.
Thomas (staring intently): No way.
Chris: Yes, I'm telling you, "SEVEN." It's there!
Thomas: Fanboy. It's official, I'm covering MWC with an insane person... looks like I'm bouncing back to Amsterdam. Peace.
Well, turns out we were both wrong -- a little Photoshop magic (okay, a lot of Photoshop magic) reveals "7 Series" underneath the decal, just waiting to be torn off after Monday's big press event. The "7" is
certainly no surprise, but the "Series" part of this is cause for some last-minute speculation -- are we actually going to see consumer and professional breakouts of the platform as we'd heard rumored a few times in the past? We'll know in less than two days. Follow the break for the full retouched image.
For the love of god... they're going to have 7 different versions of WinMo 7 aren't they? Just like Windows 7....
@TRLKOR
I hoping they have at least more than one. If all the rumors that came out this week are true then they better have a professional edition that doesn't lock it down like an iPhone.
The worst idea is taking away the ability to skin with things like Sense and TouchFlo. I like the Zune interface but it can be improved upon.
Forcing people to install from the market place is a fail too, they've had apps available third party since about 2000. Cutting off that resource and forcing it all through the market will severely limit the number of apps you have going forward.
Of course the other rumor is no backwards compatibility which makes it a moot point.
But it sounds like they're going to take all the worst ideas from their competitors and use it as a business model. I'll wait to the official announcement but I think it's time to move to Android.

@Kerensky97 "Cutting off that resource and forcing it all through the market will severely limit the number of apps you have going forward."
I thought the rumor going around was that they planned to use the marketplace, with restrictions on what can go into the marketplace, but with nothing in place preventing you from installing apps the old fashioned way.
@TRLKOR
WinMo 7 Starter will have conversations limited to 3 minutes.
@TRLKOR
Hi, thanks for buying a Series 7 Windows 7 Phone 77777
@TRLKOR
7 (official) os-tans too. which makes it 3 things that have seven 7's
so does that mean theres going to be 4 more 7 related products soon?
@TRLKOR ENHANCE!!!
@TRLKOR
There is the Entertainment that I'm guessing links up to lasts weeks leaks, and then there is Business that'll be more customizable and business oriented. And then there is the Pink, or next-gen Sidekick.
@TRLKOR
It is my understanding that MS will take a triple approach to the smart phone market .... (1) business[the real winmo] (2)the 20somethings approach probably something to compete with android/palm/and iphone
and lastly (3) the teen approach which is precisely what this project pink is supposed to be. Think about it... that was the whole reason for the Danger acquisition.
@Kerensky97
In considering the name one could assume that more than one version of Windows Phone exists.
Wasn't there a rumor of two versions? One with 3rd party overlays (Business edition) and the other more controlled (Media edition). It only makes sense to me. Why alienate everyone that uses Windows Mobile? Also, what harm is there in creating a more casual, iPhone wanna be?
I think people are jumping to conclusions and being too negative in general...:-/
-"Which version of Windows Mobile are you running on your phone?"
-"Windows Phone 750il."
@joshky They finally decided on an official OS-tan for 7?
@TRLKOR
I'm pretty sure they have 9 versions of Win7
wait a minute... since it's no longer called WIndows Mobile... but rather Windows Phone 7.. shouldnt we start calling it WinPho 7?
@TRLKOR
I'm hoping they mean "7 series" as in one version of WinMo7 but different phones that have it.
Or maybe they are trying to fragment the market .. like the typical jerks they are. I'm sure we'll get their number one innovation into phones now.. namely crashes. Ever heard of phones crashing in mysterious ways? Well you will. Also, since hardware designers are moving to designs that dont let you remove the battery I wouldn't doubt if it got into a state where it was impossible to hang up from a call .. preferably during an international call to a UK mobile phone (over 25 cents per minute).
@Kerensky97
Agree.
What Microsoft shouldn't forget about is that a huge part of their clients are pirates and hackers. which means free illegal software should be available otherwise why buy a "7 phone"?
@Kerensky97
It's WinPho now .. not WinMo =)
@TRLKOR: I'd be perfectly fine with two versions of WM7 - one locked down Zune style interface, a la iPhone, and a later "Professional" which allows manufacturer custom GUIs such as HTC Sense, and the continued ability to download apps outside the 'Marketplace'.
Best of both worlds, without being overly complicated to end users.
@MioTheGreat I agree, One of the most anticipated features is the ability for it to seamlessly use it with your ZuneHD just like iTunes. Other feasible rumors is it using TouchFlo and Sense and some dash of silverlight 3.0. For sure the MWC event will be exhilirating: http://bit.ly/the-windows-mobile-7-purported-view
Typical Microsoft. Cover it with a botched patch.
@credo The same patch that can be undone in Photoshop to X-ray certain photos...
... just sayin'.
@credo Does Microsoft know how to make any other type of patch...
@credo I lol'ed
@credo
lmao!... well said!
I have to wonder if Microsoft knew this would happen.
@apairofdocs I have the same question. And to play it safe, rather than cover it up with a sticker I think a sticker or projection of 7 series during an unveiling would've saved their "secret". Either that or after looking at it like Engadget then ask themselves, "hmmm... how can we make this work cuz this obviously isn't it?"
So I guess BMW doesn't mind...
@juanvaldez My question is what kind of black magic photoshop has friggin xray vision?
@apairofdocs I think its just people tend to make small mistakes
@apairofdocs
What is supposed to be in that icon?
@Chefgon It's a color blind test with the letter P.
1. Read Engadget.
2. I just registered 7Series.com.
3. ???
4. Profit!
@Bosco Probably not a bad idea, especially if a 3rd party wants it, but MS would have it already if they had the desire. Still, low-risk high potential reward.
@Bosco
So what's phase three?
...
@Bosco
fake Donald Melanson says: doubtful, as it has been registered since 1999.
@Donald
...
@Bosco,
Don't worry, some people got it.
@Bosco

@Almo you if you try going to that site, they ask you for a username and pass to log in to that server. how ironic!
@reebokshoes How is that ironic? The website isn't up yet.
@Nokia N900 et al.
You're all morons. Its a line from South Park. Quit arguing over it.
@credo
Here:
Gnome 1: Collecting underpants is just phase one. Phase one: collect underpants.
Kyle: So what's phase two? [e.g. the one you wanks down-ranked]
[Silence]
Gnome 1: Hey, what's phase two?!
Gnome 2: Phase one: we collect underpants.
Gnome 1: Ya, ya, ya. But what about phase two?
[Silence]
Gnome 2: Well, phase three is profit. Get it?
Stan: I don't get it.

[Silence]
Gnome 2: Phase three: profit.
Cartman: Oh I get it.
Stan: No you don't.
didnt winmo6.1 have various versions? i'm running professional, so i'm guessing there are other versions...
@BGates
good to get an answer directly from the man!
@silversun I lol'ed :P
@BGates
Also, "Windows Mobile Classic" for phones without cellular radios. (PocketPC)
@bureX
Hm... "Phones without cellular radios", an oxymoron indeed... Let me rephrase that: "Windows Mobile devices lacking telephone functionality" - better.
