Motorola Quench hands-on with video

We had a quick tour today of Motorola's new Quench -- or CLIQ XT as it'll be called on T-Mobile USA when it launches next month -- and for an eighth outing in the Android world, it's pretty slick. Sure it lacks keyboard, but the touchscreen is pretty responsive and now includes Swype input on the virtual keyboard -- and we've found with a bit of practice and patience, Swype can be really fast. The soft touch plastic rear of the set can be removed to slip on over covers and shows off the 5 megapixel camera with auto focus and dual LED flash. Follow on for a quick video tour of the Blur-powered beast and some pics.
q

looks nice
@owned66
No , it does'nt
@owned66 i hope they turn around with their designs too, they are doing a decent job on the software front lately, some of their phones arent bad, they just need to be consistent, in fact i sort of liked the motoroi that was shown today!
@owned66 it didnt show the multitouch so I might not get it. http://bit.ly/moto-cliq-quench-view
that is such a tiny screen! too much bezel... not enough display...
@micanuck
haha lets not start another conversation about bezel or god so help us
@micanuck But at least the bezel looks decent.
@micanuck
The screen looks engulfed by the bezel. Like it's about to be swallowed whole.
theres absolutly 0 mention of this things processor.
@adamlovezu it was mentioned before: i's the same of backflip and Dext. It's for the low end market.
@Verythrax
seems like their marketing it like the devour............
this thing comes out on the 10th.... the hd2 is the 24th.... who in gods name wouldnt wait lol.
@adamlovezu
Probably those of us who don't want 6.5, although that might change now that 7 is coming out.
But more importantly, those of us who can't afford it/don't want to spend that much on a phone.
Of course, if you don't want to spend that much on a phone, then I imagine you wouldn't want to be on this site and thus wouldn't know about the HD2 coming out anyway
@Junzhi
i dont mind dropping cash on good phones. so yea. hd2 will upgrade to 7 and it will make the purchase even more worthwhile.and the 6.5 shouldnt matter because of the snapdragon processor and sense2.5
1.5? Really? If you're not going to give us 2.x then at least use 1.6. At least Google actually supports that version somewhat.
ladies phone? Pretty and petite... Comon Motorola who wants a android 1.6 phone when 2.1 is out!
That "swype" feature seems nice and useless. Also, it'd be cool if the guy demonstrating the phone was able to communicate in coherent sentences.
@sumgoodman At the very least, Swype can be used the same way as the stock keyboard. When you use it as intended, you can type so much faster than anything else on the market. I definitely wouldn't call that useless.
the phone is crap..... in fact everything thats out now that doesnt have a 1ghz processor is old.
Seems quick to the touch and fairly snappy. Good to see something that can keep up.
@iKocher what else would you expect from a phone that has nothng good going for it....... its gotta have good touch or else its completely useless lol.
it didnt show the multitouch
android has saved moto!
@lv2bll54
you mean the DROID saved moto. not tis motoblur trash.... its meant to be low end and their all just messenger devices.
JUNK
What the hell is swipe texting?
@macmann In full disclosure, I work for Swype. It provides a faster and more intuitive way to input text on touch-screens. With one continuous finger or stylus motion across the keyboard, you can enter text at over 30 words per minute. For more information visit: www.swypeinc.com
pretty good looking phone, sucks its still running 1.5 though.
I hate how motorola is adding LED flashes on their new phones, but failed to do so on the CLIQ, yess im bitter :(
@jayy337 Yeah the LED flash that I can turn on just by opening the camera app has been the single coolest feature of my old Q9h-- When I finally DO upgrade, my new device will have to include the same functionality. That "flash", while useless for taking pics, is the GREATEST for finding keys, roadside car repairs (when your flashlight has dead batteries), avoiding mud puddles in the dark, even finding my tree stand in the pre-dawn hours. I never see anyone extolling the virtues of a quickly-accessed LED flashlight on a phone but honestly I don't know that I could do without it now... Maybe I just spend too much time in the dark.
I say yay for moto... Android is the way to go for hardware manufacturers, IMO. It's mutually beneficial for both the hardware supplier as well as the operating system/software suppliers. Although they're releasing devices like this running early versions of the OS, I don't think it will be a big deal as it is aimed at the low end of the smartphone spectrum. This is a genius idea, IMO. As it brings affordable android smartphones into the mainstream which means more marketability for apps, etc. which will thus make the platform more appealing to the masses. And the cycle begins...
Any particular reason that it's called "Quench" and not "QUENCH"?
The home screens are so....cluttered...
I like MotoBLUR. I like my Cliq. I HATE the theme. The fact that it's black and red ui and white tiny text is a bitch to see outside in the sun. Not to mention that most Android phones use a grey, white and yellow/green theme makes some apps set for those themes just ugly on the Cliq. Oh and what of the fact that we're STILL in 1.5? That's pretty inexcusable. Motoblur is an extension, not a compensation for being behind.
Oh and another thing. The Dialer "app" shouldn't be an "app" that can freeze like everything else. It's the phones main function. When I get a call, I want it to push, shove and kick everything it's doing out of the way when I answer, dammit. Same for SMS. Is that too much to ask?!
Sorry, lol, I just had to vent that and no I'm not trolling. I love Android but they gotta get their OS and devices in a row already.
Yawn.
How friggin' annoying would it be to be always changing the orientation of the screen. As it seemed the inbox and messaging functions were only in landscape.
Did you see the error message half way through? I have the cliq. I recognize the force close message.....same old problems. I prefer having the keyboard, but the profile is sweeter without it. Having a flash for the camera is swell as well. I understand it uses Android 1.5, same as the cliq. All the rest of the feature are just the same.
Why does everybody include T-Mobile gets all the GOOD PHONES?! i really really hate the Back Flip. This new Quench makes the Back Flip super pretty looking. I hate AT&T!! I WANT ANDROID A GOOD ANDROID PHONE.
does it have wifi?
God, why do phones have such queer names these days?
It looks kind of retro: Irwin Allen's Lost in Space-ish
