It's still sort of weird to see an Envy laptop and
not see
a Voodoo badge following along, but as Rahul Sood has
so eloquently explained, it's HP's burden to bear from here on out. We got a chance to
toy around with the smaller of the two a few months ago, and since then, the company
lowered the asking prices for both while simultaneously updating the specifications. For those who've managed to procure either of the editions, we're curious to hear what you think about HP's first Voodoo-free Envy laptops. Is the trackpad up to snuff? How's the display? Is the performance satisfactory given the price? Can you use it without torching your lap? Spill your innermost thoughts in comments below -- you know we won't judge you.
I'd make a 17" version for better cooling. Because right now the 15" runs as hot as a mid-summer day in Texas.
@Prevacator I think that 17 inch model with better design for heat dissipation is on the way
(Source: http://hpfansite.com/hp-elitebook/super-hp-belated-valentines-day-rumors-roundup/)
@Prevacator thats not very hot for a computer.
@Dr Spaceman
It is when that's the temperature you feel in the palmrest, not necessarily what the internal temps are.
@Prevacator
yeah id make a 17 incher and get it for my brother. cause he is looking for a PC with a decent screen for graphics design.
I looked at that picture and I really thought I would see an Apple logo.
Anyways, they are just a touch too expensive for me, otherwise they look like decent machines.
Envy: designed by Apple, built and sold by HP.
Seriously HP, a little originality wouldn't hurt (aside from the goofy dimples effect).
@IBrian
I don't think it looks too much like an Apple, but HP designs a lot of pretty stuff that doesn't look like Apple stuff. There's a market for that slick girly look but in a machine with real performance and reliability. I am not surprised HP would want to fill that niche. Telling them to make this pretty machine look different is probably just sour grapes. Especially from an Apple fan. This machine is targeting people who like that look.
If you want something that doesn't look like a Mac, go with Lenovo or something.
@Unverified User
are you serious???... This looks like thy took a MBP and put DELL over the Apple Logo!
Dell does make products that are of their own design- but this one us definately not it. Dell doesn't seem to care much that they stole the design... The only reason it's that price is because they firgure people would buy a laptop that looks like a Mac but runs M$.
@think before you react read your name again, read the Article again and then tell me where do u see a DELL Logo?
@think before you react
how ironic
@HotFuzz I agree with you. Yes I am a Apple Fan boy( I have that right) but, as a lover of gadgets it's better to look different in my eyes, unless HP likes being labled as a Mac. Yes I like PC :0P
@IBrian
"I looked at that picture and I really thought I would see an Apple logo."
I looked at that PRICE and really thought I would see an apple logo.
@HotFuzz
I love that movie,
imagine someone getting paid as much as the designers at hp, just to tweak other people work enough so that they can not be sued.
We are talking about the leader in market share ripping a design off the 10%+ market sharer
Loose the HP branding on the Windows lock screen and desktop. Other than that, this thing is well equipped and very stylish.
Also, fix the heat issues on the 15 (perhaps this has been taken care of already). 13 seems fine.
@ScienceProUSAcom
It's actually pretty easy to change the lock screen background in Windows 7. I'm not positive that's how it is, because I don't own an Envy, but just look around for some articles out there on changing the lock screen. All you have to do is replace a file or two. Or hell, if you just want the original Windows 7 one, all you have to do is delete a file.
@ScienceProUSAcom Uninstall both stardock mycolors and stardock logonstudio.
@ScienceProUSAcom
Or just do a clean install of Windows 7 to remove all of the HP junk in one go :)
@Delta
You are correct it is easy to change your login screen on windows 7.
I like to use a program called tweaks login which lets you easily change the welcome screen.
URL(http://tweaks.com/software/tweakslogon/)
@ScienceProUSAcom You mean they should put linux on it? Actually that would be dope, but they wouldn't offer the option, ever.
Make it an ...naww just joshin'
@ossger
That was a pretty low punch :)
Get better touchpads. That goes for every line of laptops you make, HP.
@soren121
+1
Actually HP can make decent touchpads, many of their business laptops have got really good touchpads (I've got an old 6710b, great feeling touchpad), but for some reason HP would like to make a pretty decent machines like the dm3, and ruin it by making the touchpad out of rubber that would be more useful on say, the wheels of formula 1 race car, where the friction could be very useful.
@HawtDawg The tx2500 has an awesome touchpad. My only complaint is that it is a tad small. The touchpad is in a bit of a dip, and is dimpled. It is really accurate and fast. I hate the newer HP touchpads on most models that I have used though. The slippery glass does not do it for me, there needs to be some friction.
@HawtDawg Ok, let me rephrase that then. That goes for every _consumer_ line of laptops you make, HP.
@Troll
Learn to read. He is saying that the touchpad surface has too much friction and should be glossier. I have to agree with him, the HP trackpads in general are mediocre at best. Not very responsive, and usually far too small.
I have to admit I am an Apple fan, and absolutely LOVE the trackpad on my new MacBook Pro.
@Troll
I call baloney!
@aeiluindae Eh, I have a tx2000z with the same touchpad and it kind of sucks.
@soren121
their cheaper laptops have the most terrible touchpads in the world... compared to a 4 year macbook pad configured with double tap righ click, tap click, tap-drag and multi touch scrolling, it made me realize why apple hadn't taken over the high end laptop market sooner. then i remembered that they run osx by default.
Fix the trackpad, there's a thought. I mean if you are going to charge a premium price, at least make it usable, not 100% worthless.
Otherwise, screen beautiful, everything was awesome. I just wish they had a removable drive bay so I can just pop a drive out of my machine and pop it into the laptop and start up vmware and just continue working @ full speeds.. Would be nice.
@Troll Shut up.
I almost bought this, then I tried using the trackpad. Fix that, and everything else is minor.
Release the Courier.
Lower the costs...
@nbollinger: Done. http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/hp-updates-envy-13-and-envy-15-laptops-lowers-prices-significan/
@nbollinger
the 13incher is still ridiculously overpriced though. VAIO Z seems like a better option in every way for a little more dough.
-Move HP customer support back to canada/states.
-Get rid of the crappy gloss and stop coppying other brands (come out with something more innovative)
STOP SUCKING
how about be more original? Looks like an apple , feels like an apple, but when you try it, you taste the bitterness of the lemon
@miralize basically, destroy the entire Envy line completely and come up with something that doesn't look like a fake macbook. I sitll can't believe they had the nerve to do this in the firs place. HP, where's your pride?
Make them CHEAPER!
@Addyct
Ah, yes, the rallying cry of PC fanboys....
*sigh
@Addyct
We're not all rich.
@Wesscoast When you are more expensive than a comparable MACINCTOSH, you might need to lower your price...
remove the bloatware. including that taskbar in the pic above!!!!!!
@oringal I think the Envy in that picture is booted into a quick-start OS, so that's just how they designed their little OS. The Windows button in the bottom-left should boot you into Windows. Correct me if I'm wrong; I don't own nor have I ever seen with my own eyes an Envy.
@soren121 You're correct... it's basically a quick-start OS that boots into whatever selection you make... Kind of pointless, but you don't have to use it.
This reminds me of a laptop that is out already in 13in and 15in thats pretty popular.
AM-OLED displays.
I don't own one, but having used one for a few hours, it needs better cooling and a better trackpad design.
That said, I think the overall design is pretty good, even though it's eerily like using my MacBook Pro via Bootcamp.
