Sony slips two new PS3 Slim models through the FCC
Our favorite pseudonym company out there, Sand Dollar Enterprise, is back with a pair of new filings with the FCC pointing to a refresh of the PlayStation 3 Slim hardware. We don't know specifically what has been overhauled inside, though the two new SKUs, CECH-2101A and CECH-2101B, mimic the coding scheme of the current hardware, which is CECH-2001A and B. The alphabetical differentiation relates to different hard drive sizes inside, with 120GB and 250GB options available today and likely to be replicated in the forthcoming consoles. Looking at the FCC's radio testing, we find the same 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR transceivers as are in the current Slim, leading us to believe the changes are elsewhere or, as PS3 News suggests, maybe Sony has just found new manufacturers for the same chips and had to run them through the validation committee again. It's just that the latter is far less exciting than the idea of Sony starting up an upgrades war with some tasty springtime spec bump.

@MechEMark Doesnt that adapter also cost you $80, whilst the hardware doesn't even directly interface with the logic board, and leaves a giant tumor on the back? Sony actually loses money for every unit they sell, asking more out if the hardware with the same cost = greedy never satasfied customer.
@Colrath
Is 802.11n really a deal breaker...I've got my console hard wired into my router and video streaming is working really well as is online play and downloads are ok.
It'd be awesome if the "PS3" was actually "slim" and you could stand it up. Also please stop using the dumb name "Slim" it's not the proper name for the device.
@malexandria1 You can....but why would you want to? If it falls over it can mess something up
$10 PS2 games in the PSN store would be HUGE!
Anybody think of usb 3.0 ???? It would be a nice upgrade to go with the update ( http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/03/sony-licenses-official-ps3-external-hdds-doesnt-fully-compre/ ) for faster external drive usage.!!!
45 nm GPU.
Maybe it's a hardware fix to geohot exploit? I know the exploit only works on phat but maybe sony felt like adding extra protection to slim to prevent similiar exploits.
Interesting, I've been waiting for a PS3 deal to jump in, I hope this doesn't mean I have to wait longer...
Faster Blu-Ray drives would be awesome. Nip that required hard drive install situation right out of existence.
HDMI 1.4? or backwards compatibility with the emotion engine? or both?
Software b/c would be ok, but I need to know for sure before I buy one.
didnt read all comments but it may be cheap hardware to get some profit?
Do they have to go through the FCC just because they got some new/additional manufacturers involved? I mean, it's hard to come by a PS3 these days, and some new production would be much appreciated!!!
I would like a faster blu-ray drive though.
could they have the new hdmi 1.4?
I think I'll wait till the two new models comes out MY PS3 died on New Years EVE lasted 3 years which is pretty good. Right now I'm missing lot of good games that suppose to come out in March & April.
Maybe a newer faster BD-ROM drive?
SONY keeps making them smaller and better every time.
so a new ps3 or is this hardware only featured in the 250gb or something?
