Samsung makes Skype for new LED lit HDTVs official
Panasonic and LG won't be the only ones with Skype-enabled HDTVs, though we peeped it in the specs earlier, Samsung has officially announced its new 7000 and 8000 series televisions will also include access. Accessible through the embedded Samsung Apps service, it appears it will work with the new HD video processing webcams just like the others, so users can log in to or create an account with the remote then make video or voice calls away from the PC. We heard at CES those cameras could run as high as $200, check out the CES 2010 demo from Panasonic to see if couch videoconferencing is worth the additional expense.

I can use my laptop just fine from the couch. And watch TV while I'm doing it, I might add.
@chispito
That's what I was thinking.
@chispito
Good for you, but I much prefer to get up really close to my TV and grin like an idiot while granny flips gang signs at my teenage son.
@chispito
I am just wondering when the government will call me into their office to tell me I was observed engaging in inappropriate behavior in front of my TV...
Man get that kid some braces! lol
"New HD video processing" nice nice
@Gabe GMFB
They can't afford braces, they just bought that TV.
@Gabe GMFB
DENTAL PLAN
@MaxL Lisa needs braces
@ALBGunner04
DENTAL PLAN
@Hexydes
they cant afford the DENTAL PLAN because they just bought that TV.
I think this last couple of months out of eBay's hands saw more improvements than all the time it was under it. Talk about a wasted amount of time and dumb move... Skype is everywhere and back on the news.
And I am pretty sure that if eBay would have not bought the them before, Skype would now belong to Google.
That picture doesn't make sense. Why is that grandma sitting there like she's in front of a computer?
Honestly, I really don't see why anyone would want to skype from their TV.
@mtnDewFTW
Ha! You beat me to it... was gonna say the same thing!
@mtnDewFTW Check this picture out. The same people but the kid teleported to his granny. SKYPE TO SKYPE TELEPORTATION CONFIRMED IN THE LATEST VERSION!! http://c.skype.com/i/images/screenshots/download_41_gold_header.png
@Dark Archon PSN Archonik XBL Dar
!!!!
@mtnDewFTW Couch conferencing. Have your family there on the couch having a Skype call with a relative (and his or her family) from another city.
Maybe even a board meeting?
Not entirely useful for me but it has a niche.
@mtnDewFTW
My grandma (ironically) would. We've been doing this on PCs for ages; why did it took them so long?
Just smile and wave boys, just smile and wave.
Jesus Christ. Seriously. How is Skype still not available on the PS3. IT DOES have a camera with a built-in microphone which is meant to be seated right next to/in front of your TV. What's stopping you Sony?
Wow nice, I want the webcam that delivers that image-quality...
The future is now.
@furquanatique
reminds me of THX 1138
With Skype you can taunt your ex-wife anytime you want!!
I thought that 'kid' was his wife
I predict this will sweep the world as the videophone has.
Too bad China might ban this.......
@techlord
Errr....no, why? So would India/Iran/Saudi Arabia, your point?
@williamlau05
why? with burqas you can't even see the actual face of the women? so even with skype it's the same...
The deaf and signing community would absolutely LOVE this!
one step closer to the telescreens in 1984.
I knew Carey Mulligan looked like a boy.
Hey, it's Justin Bieber!
I could actually use this with my family spread out all over the country. Would beat trying to get more than one person to huddle around a small pc/laptop...
I think it is kind of funny, the idea just 20 years ago that we could actually buy a flat screen HDTV that hands on the wall that could easily video conference around the world in high resolution was simply mind blowing. Now that it is here and more than we could have ever imagined 20 years ago it is so, anti-climatic.
That guy's head is waaaay too big.
This ruins sitting on the couch in my underwear watching TV.
@alexz
Are you sure? Isn't that going to be the most popular use-case?
