Viliv's S10 Blade netvertible priced at $699 and up
There's hardly a shortage of tablet news these days, but Viliv is managing to cut through somewhat with its relatively robust S10 Blade. Introduced (and toyed with) at CES this year, the Atom-powered device is now up for pre-order at Dynamism (sort of, anyway), with the big reveal being the heretofore unannounced starting price: $699. We get the feeling that some of the more well-appointed units will end up costing far more than that, but at least you know you can get 10.3-inches of resistive multitouch action into your life for less than a carbon fiber Mustang hood. Or pretty much anything else that cost over seven Benjamins.

resistive is so last decade
@mrqs
are you just trolling or do you honestly not know that a screen you are meant to WRITE ON needs the accuracy and stylus-friendliness of a resistive touch screen. i really hope it's the former.
@mrqs Actually, I'd rather buy a resistive tablet.
Why?
I'm a computer science student. Taking notes with a virtual keyboard only sucks, because I can do the same with my trusty notebook, only better (real keyboard and stuff...). But it's not enough, I keep some paper-based notebooks near, to write down equations, graphs, diagrams, etc...
Taking notes with a real keyboard and a stylus-enabled touchscreen on the other hand would be awesome. I type what I have to type, then if I need to draw something, I just whip out the stylus and draw it.
Also, capacitive is last decade too. In fact, here's a book on designing capacitive sensors from 1996: http://books.google.com/books?id=Tjd2laRnO4wC&pg=PA138&dq=capacitive+sensors+mouse&lr=&as_brr=3&as_pt=ALLTYPES&ei=sMOASeONJIHmyATKlLWzCw
@owdee & Gerusz
to each their own - i'd rather 1) use the keyboard and/or 2) carry a pen and paper around to take notes/draw
btw, http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/14/htc-files-patent-for-capacitive-stylus-with-resistive-accuracy/
Taking notes requires digitizer. Resistitive touchscreen is not enough for taking notes. Tm2 by HP is the only one laptop for taking notes with a good battery life, multitouch that cost less than a 1000$. It got Dual core intel culv processor, 4 gb of ram, discrete graphics is available, it's got good 12" display which is, as i think, perfect size for students.
@owdee
That's absurd. Don't say you need a resistive screen in order to accept stylus input. HP has managed to do tablets with capacitive multitouch displays with active digitizers for 950. Also, if you've ever tried writing on a resistive display, it's horrid. Active digitizers by Wacom are an ABSOLUTE must to prevent the issues of vectoring in addition to pressure sensitivity. There's no reason why anyone should be getting a netbook spec'ed computer with such a screen.
With a pen? I need a pen on a tablet...
This is a multitouch device I can easily resist. ;)
@Chazwell
I see what you did there... good one!
Are newer resistive touch screens more durable than the screens on the DS or are screen protectors still a necessity with these things.
ummm...that's a very nice Windows 7 wallpaper >.
@BeeQAL I noticed the same thing. It's actually fanmade, lol. Quite a fail.
Seriously, Netvertible? Wow.
This is about $300 worth of netbook hardware for $700+?
I love the idea, but the price is out of line. I mean I can understand maybe a $100 premium for the hinge design and the touchscreen hardware, but neither of those components should be DOUBLING the price of what is essentially "commodity" netbook guts.
@Hazdaz
It all depends on how well they've implemented it. If the fit and finish is there, it may be worth it. It looks really thin to me, but you are most likely right. I'd wait 'til a review before deciding.
@Atkins
Fine, I'll meet you half way and say that there might be about $150 worth of "premium" parts on this thing over a generic netbook. A slightly higher rez screen and touch-controls are not exactly cutting-edge or extremely expensive add-ons now a days. A 1.3Ghz Atom is not some high-end chip and no mention of RAM or storage space. Looking at the Press Release nothing else in it sounded expensive.
I could see a ~$450 price or somewhere in that neighborhood... but definitely not $700 and lets be clear, that is the STARTING price for the lowest end unit.
@Hazdaz i agree ;p
We knew this would happen... Once Apple disclosed the iPad, PC makers would start tossing out TONS of tablets/tablet-like PC's. I'm sure only a SELECT few will make the cut. Slapping together components doesn't equal a good PC- as well all know. Hopefully this won't be tossed to the wayside like most of them, it would be a waste of time and money. Good luck viliv.
@Atkins
It was unintentional if I suggested that Apple was first to make a tablet or the first to have the tablet idea etc. What I do believe is that most tablets coming out at this juncture are due to pre iPad disclosure rumor or post iPad disclosure AND to capitalize on the market, PC makers are going to release sub par computers that are inefficient and and don't deserve face time.
I didn't mean to say iPad will rule all and Steve Jobs is a god or anything like that;)
@Atkins
not sure what you you meant by "t's just sad it is so difficult to have the asian products on our markets (Europe or America). If they come here they will ruin every company here ;) Just like they have the camera market." Please explain if you have some time.
@think before you react

So rough translation:
"While Apple didnt invent tablets, and these companies have been making them for years. Because of Apple releasing the iPad, these companies are making them now. And they are all terrible, because they are not Apple."
Yeah, even the translation is as illogical as the original.
@LAY
Wow. It sure is easy to see an Apple hater these days.
AGAIN- I wasn't saying that Apple was the inventor of tablets etc (although it could be argued about the newton). What I am saying is that with all the hubbub before and after the iPad announcement, PC manufacturers want to capitalize on the popularity of tablets- Apple was just the fuel for the popularity.
And while tablets have been out for years- they've been met little or no recognition because they lack quality/speed(which decreases usefulness)/worthless OS's.
Why do you think people were so excited about Apple tablet rumors? I'm pretty sure it's because people would like to have a tablet and they believed Apple MIGHT possibly have the goods to finally deliver a tablet platform worth buying.
To this day I haven't used a tablet (and I've tried a few) that I've enjoyed my experience on. Also, I'm sure you know, but the iPad isn't even in users hands yet - SO I'm not saying that I'm going to like or dislike the iPad.
In conclusion (AGAIN) "What I do believe is that most tablets coming out AT THIS JUNCTURE" are due to pre iPad disclosure rumor or post iPad disclosure AND to capitalize on the market, PC makers are going to release sub par computers that are inefficient and and don't deserve face time."
Stop being an douche. And don't "translate" FALSELY what I wrote in plain English.
@Atkins
Thanks EXACTLY what I meant- although you left the part out where other manufacturer's will stick to the same poor way of producing tablets as before, which is slapping parts together and not considering the whole package- hardware AND software.
@Atkins
So true.
@think before you react
"In conclusion (AGAIN) "What I do believe is that most tablets coming out AT THIS JUNCTURE" are due to pre iPad disclosure rumor or post iPad disclosure "
So in other words, all of these companies making tablets are doing it all because of Apple? Yeah, doesn't seem like I was far off.
"AND to capitalize on the market,"
Ok, which is it? the iPad in rumor hasn't made a market, and there is yet to be one shown. Yet you say it has and has made all of these guys make a tablet in the past 6 months?
" PC makers are going to release sub par computers that are inefficient and and don't deserve face time.""
Translation: "All PC tablets are trash and should be ignored. Apple's however is not and should be the focus of all attention.
"Stop being an douche. And don't "translate" FALSELY what I wrote in plain English."
I'm still trying to figure out where I got it wrong the first time.
There 's hardly a lack of tablet news these days, but there is definitely a lack of tablets one can actually buy and use.
I'm still waiting to grab one (possibly Android based) and it seems like I'll still be waiting for quite a few months at the very least since I'm not stupid enough to be tempted by the iPad.
@Atkins I think it's pretty arrogant to believe that computer makers are just "throwing together" tablets since the iPad.
Taking notes in class with a stylus on a tabletPC. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. College is supposed to make people smarter.
@Ed T
Okay. Well that was interesting.
Maybe if they take them with an iPad, you will all of a sudden find the practice completely brilliant?
@LAY
No, using an iPad would be even dumber - it doesn't have a stylus.
@Ed T
Assuming you meant a pen and paper:
I don't want a pen and paper. Paper notes can get lost/torn/otherwise damaged. I prefer a digital copy. I can get a file and upload it to a site quite easily. If I wanted to do the same with physical notes, I'd have to pay to make copies.
@BigJayDogg3 Besides that, I don't know any way that I can search pen & paper notes without physically looking at every single page.
I'll stick with OneNote.
Not really crazy about an Atom powered laptop, but I like the inverted screen as opposed to the swivel design of most tablet notebooks. If they took a Dell Studio and gave me that, I'd probably have to splurge and get one, lol.
I've been looking into this machine for some time now for note taking in my classes. Now if Asus could follow suit and release one with a high resolution screen consider me sold.
@blake101jbe Honestly, you really don't want to take notes on a resistive touch screen.
What about Acer 1420P? Will it be available... cause I want touch netbook with better performance... but not that expensive... this one looking good on the picture, but with Atom processor is doomed and also the 10 inch screen res is really small.
I agree with all of you guys that mention that the price is a bit steep. The $699 price must be for the base model, which isn't that impressive. There aren't very many multi-touch netbooks or "netvertibles" so I think that Viliv and Dynamism are trying to make some money. There aren't many choices, but there will be more this year.
Asus might be the company that brings the prices down. As I see it right now the battle of netvertibles has begun, especially between the Lenovo S10-3T and the Viliv S10.
There are many other sources quoting the $699 price:
