Alright,
Droid owners,
decent multitouch performance isn't the only thing you've got to brag about. As you likely know by now,
2.1's in the works for you -- and from the latest video we're seeing of an official test build running in the wild, we're cautiously optimistic that it's going to be a fantastic little update. As we'd
reported some time back, the
Nexus One's revamped app launcher is missing, but multitouch appears to work like butter in both the browser and revamped Gallery app and the new news and weather widgets have made the cut as well. Most notable, though, might simply be the fact that everything flies -- home screen switches, opening of the app drawer, zooming, it's all mega-fast. Granted, anyone with an Android device knows that the speed of the device depends on the number of apps you've got running, the moon phase, and the direction of the wind, but it's an encouraging sign nonetheless. Now if only Moto would stop
fumbling the launch, we'd be good to go; in the meantime, though, check some video of the update after the break.
No 5-screen = major bummer!
@joe23521
Download open home and you can get up to 7 screens. Runs great for me.
I might just buy a Droid/Milestone... I'm tired of waiting for my (current) dream phone - HTC Supersonic. Well Supersonic + physical k/board would just be the best. Still, it's barely a rumor at the moment and my phone needs replacing!
Haha Engadget you guys are funny! I sent you a tip on this like 3 weeks ago when Pete got a NEWER ERE build then this (29). I sent you a video of him running it and everything lol, way to stay on your game!

I think the Droid is almost fast enough as it is, but i am comparing to BB Storm, so meh.
Seriously i am interested on seeing some upgrades on fundamental problems that would greatly enhance the functionality of the phone. For instance when using a 3rd party IMAP/POP account, I'd like to have the ability to search my emails to find what i am looking for. I shouldn't have to use my gmail account to get this functionality. After all, search-ability is google's thing regardless right? Next is also email related for 3rd party accounts - the ability to forward emails with attachments and have that email/attachment stay intact when it received by the recipient. Attachments are stripped from emails when forwarding from the phone. However, this also apparently works on the gmail app using the gmail account, but again - i shouldn't have to switch to get this functionality.
Tighter integration with Facebook. Ok - while this isn't OS related in the traditional sense - it kind of is when you acknowledge the fact that Facebook comes pre-installed on the OS. I should be able to manually link a facebook friend to an android contact when the names differ. When i get a notification email from facebook, it should open up with the facebook app, not as an email. having someone comment on something i posted a few days ago doesn't give me any context on what the person is referring to unless i go into the comment, which by the way the link in the email notification does not direct me to the specific page when the webkit browser converts to facebook touch, I am instead redirected to the news feed.
Again functionaly should be the focus, not additional speed. Overall the phone is awesome, though...i am never going back to blackberry...
Can you load this ROM on the GSM Motorola Milestone?
Any word on if this update will have voice input like on the N1?
@BC Nevermind, Youtube was loading the video really slowly so I asked this before I actually got to see the vid.
that's smooth in the world of android? wow, my first gen iphone scrolls home screens smoother than that, and the 3gs is way more powerful than the first gen iphone. I keep hearing all these people talk about how awesome android is, but every time I see a video of someone using it the UI looks clunky, outdated, and SLOW. you guys don't notice the screen stuttering when he flips home screens? and that's a big improvement?!?
I'm hoping that Buzz either does not come with maps, or if it does, that I have the option to completely disable it.
What clock widget is he using?
