When we first spied Huawei's SmaKit S7 Android tablet, we were at CeBit and it was... well,
non-functioning. Now Huawei's officially announced the tablet now, and we have to say that it looks just like every other
Android tablet being hoisted upon the world these days, but it's got some nice features that make it worth a second gander. The 7-incher boasts an 800 x 480 pixel resolution, 720p playback, 3G connectivity, plus a dock with HDMI out, two USB 2.0 ports, and two microSDHC slots. The tablet, which runs the 1.6 version of the OS, will supposedly be available this summer, though we don't yet have any information about where it will be available or how much it will cost. We'll let you know as soon as we do -- but in the meantime, there's a video demo after the break.
So many tablets; so much Asian
android/usb/hdmi - already a win
@mattscinto
Rerry.
@mattscinto
he's just the booth babe - eye candy.
it would help tell the eye candy where the hdmi port is.
@mattscinto
Ya, just like what HTC do to Magic.
No software support, not update, no content.
They will just release another and yet another piece of junk hardware to you.
@cameronsipod
And a babe he is!
@unwynd I have to disagree...1.6 = Lose.
@mattscinto
this actually looks pretty cool, like how it can make calls
Interface looks better than anything Cupertino is pushing out these days..
@ashleythehottiest Is that a joke? Android 1.6 is hardly pushing the envelope in the interface design. You must not have used anything apple or just love your new android phone to much.
Smack It? Is that how you pronounce it?
@ashleythehottiest
LOL, i was gonna post the same thing... if that's how you pronounce it, what a silly name. Even worse then 'iPad' imo.
Look the spec, they have all your iPad hater want in the piece of junk.
Yet another tablet, hope you iPad hater enjoy these junks.
@zetman
Haha silly boy
@zetman
"Hate" gives the impression that the resentment towards the iPad is not founded on good reasons. The iPad offers a -by far- inferior web browsing experience to the Macbook, and thanks to that square shape, offers an inferior movie viewing experience as well (huge black bars will dominate the screen).
And don't get me started on the lack of a front camera for Skype video calling, and a daylight viewable screen for e-reading.
The only person who would "love" the iPad is a fanboy.
@TareG
I will pay my money to good quality product and good service.
Look what HTC done to Magic, even company big like HTC still just drop you a piece of junk and leave you no support.
I spent money to enjoy life not for looking solution to DIY or crying no support in user forums.
Admit it, these manufactory just want sell you junk hardware
and their solution is keeping you on their roadmap buying all the junk the made.
@zetman
And Apple doesn't want to just sell stuff to you?
Yeah, because we all know Apple wants to save the world. (sarcasm)
@HardToBelieve
Are you hater so blind to see the truth ?
HTC Magic release about only 1 year ago only, and yet there is no update support, they are still in stupid android 1.5 with broken Youtube App.
Can you image they are trying to sell PC running on win95 but don't tell you when will you be able update to windows 7 ? We all know and what happen to android platform and what service you will get for early adopter. Shinny no quality hardware with absolutely no software support. No, thank you!,
@zetman http://www.htc.com/europe/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=267&cat=2&dl_id=862 ...no support indeed...
@NIMBUS
There are two versions of the Magic 32A and 32B. I put my serial number in there and it says my 32B can't download it. My Magic is Vodafone branded and it won't work. The previous poster is mistaken in placing the blame on HTC if he has a branded phone. The carrier held it up. Vodafone wants to sell you a new phone instead of giving you a free upgrade...hmmm...imagine that.
Based on the quality of their 3G dongles... I wouldn't buy their crap if you paid me :)
Unless the payment happened to exceed the cost of the product, thus making it profitable.. in which case, I'd buy it then flog it on ebay.
@sshole at saying that, this does indeed look quite nice to the eye
Somehow I'm getting tired of seeing all these tablet news... I guess the credit goes to Apple for making everyone getting into the tablet race.
@msunardi
They didnt just turn these things out since Jan.
If anything, we should thank Microsoft for keeping the concept alive for as long as they did.
@LAY It's just that the whole touchscreen tech didn't pick up until iPhone, and now the tablet since iPad (and the rumors around its launch). I've got to hand it to Apple's marketing. But, yeah... I'm pretty much excited withe their Courier concept.
Again, NO FRONT CAMERA. This piece of hardware is never making Skype video calls. Till now, NotionInk's Tablet is leading the pack.
@TareG You might want to watch the video. In around 2:25 he points out the camera.
@rwalrond
Oh, great. I can't watch the video because I'm using a computer with no flash installed (pun intended).
On a different "notion", NotionInk's tablet still leads the pack thanks to its daylight viewable screen for a far more superior reading experience.
@TareG
What 'pun' did you intend? Am I the only one who can't see one?
This is actually kind of cool. You would really need a murse with this one if you wanted to use it as your phone w/ bluetooth
Andriod sure has become popular especially with the chinese black market.
I like how the icons aren't separated by acres of empty desktop, the way any non-optimised version of Android would look on an MID.
How do you do 720p video playback on a 800x480 screen?
@wobbl
It does it via HDMI to a HDTV...
Has anybody noticed that far more Android devices are popping up where ChromeOS would have been considered the choice pic. Personally I think it's because Android is more of a full OS than ChromeOS. Local storage etc. etc.
This is actually not that darn shabby.
If it is as cheap as one that was featured earlier, I may get one of these for my wife.
Android is so addictive.
Here's the problem with android OS for me.
I see 1.6 when I know 2.1 is already out and I think "Meh, that OS is already stale."
I don't have enough experience with it to know if this is truly the case but people really need to elaborate.
Is Android upgradeable no matter what device or are you stuck with the OS you get? And I don't mean hack job upgradeable, but just going online and hitting update.
Is 1.6 the sweet spot for things that aren't smartphones and 2.x just includes better functioning GPS and all that stuff?
I think these things are really important to know to convince people that an Android tablet is better than a Windows CE tablet.
@zetman If you want updates, buy an Archos Android tablet. More and more bugs with every new firmware update.
does android support skype? it would be nice to have it as the device has a webcam.
man that guy is trying to show it and the other guy keeps touching it.
i would have slapped him silly.
That actually looks pretty sweet, and the custom interface looks even nicer than what I've seen before on Android devices.
Really smooth as well, wonder if it's running Snapdragon
How will it compare to Toshiba's and HP's new flagship?
Toshiba's tablet: http://www.wergadgets.com/2010/03/11/toshiba-will-have-its-own-family-of-slates-by-this-time-next-year/
HP's tablet: http://www.wergadgets.com/2010/03/09/more-info-on-the-hp-slate/
So the Android fragmentation continues on tablets as well.
Wonder how long people are going to continue to accept buying outdated products.
Whatever happened to Huawei's "mystery wrapped in an enigma" Android smartphone showed at the MWC 09? Vaporware, Inc.
Finally someone gets it, Huawei actually skinned Android. Thank You!!! Now you other vendors pay attention to what they did there, I don't want to see any vanilla Android builds on any hardware coming out in the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2010.
Funny, but the one things which appeals to me is the built-in stand on the device. So many tablet manufacturers leave it out, and it is a pain if you are trying to prop it up to watch video or even listen to podcasts. This one looks like the Nokia N800/ N810's stand which is great.
Must be the biggest phone i have seen.. :P haha
But damn, that is one hell of a nice tablet !! If only it could support USB hosting for keyboard. ( even if it's on a charger so that the battery isn't goinig to deplete by that. )
i like how they copied htc
