Apple Store down globally: iPad pre-orders only or something more?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
@Liquidmark ahaha !! they could have done it BEFORE on another server.
@phearme
Yeah, that works out sooo well for other companies that have accidentally left out or added a zero to their price.
@AltairDusk
I think we're filing that one under the "No Shit, Sherlock" category. Blame the media sites that post this "news" and the muppets that click to read the articles. Basically, you can blame me.

apple's web servers are so practical that they need to be down when updated ? or is the apple store so badly developed that they need to put it down when they add a new product ?
@phearme
both
@phearme - Ever heard of marketing?
@MRCUR ...so if nothin new shows up, we'll have to guess it's just that their website sucks.
Omg, omg omg, gasp, gasp, omg, omg, omg!
You PS the font wrong. It is Myriad Pro. Apple's legal department will be contacting you.
Just FYI the Engadget PS drone is clearly using Myriad Pro Semibold.
Oh the horror!!!
So. Fricken. Excited.
/sarcasm
I just want new MBPs, who gives a shit about the iPoop?
LOL. Too poor to buy an Apple product, so go trashing it on the Internet. Feel less of a loser. Yup. It's the same old routine.
The ipad is going to be magical for those you do use it and can afford it. I can just sense the envy here.....WOW. You guys that 'claim' you're going to buy this and that- HP Slate, Dell mini etc. I bet you're not buying anything! Those products will probably be discontinued due to poor sales. Because HP, Dell etc were stupid enough to realize that you guys were a real market.
@jaffreywali but can the iPod play crysis ? or can it update a website without taking it down ?
Of course they don't _have_ to take it down just to update it.
They _choose_ to take it down to generate buzz.
@jgp
private void generateBuzz(website appleStore) {
appleStore.goDown();
try
{
while (fanboysCuming.Count < 1048576)
Thread.Sleep(0);
}
finally
{
appleStore.goUp();
}
}
I am PUMPED....two 64GB no 3g for me please, thank you very much!
it's amazing that in 2010, this company still cant keep the site alive while updating it.
@htd They can, they just choose not to.
and I am all set...BOUGHT...love stored info!
I'm utterly convinced that this device will change home computing but I'm not buying one on Day #1. Unfortunately, Apple's QA for new products has been a bit iffy over recent years (perhaps as a result of their growth?) so I'll be waiting for them to knock the kinks out of the hardware and software before buying unless the reports are very positive. Mind you, much as I found with the iPhone 3GS this might mean that actually finding one is more difficult later in the year. Oh well...
@Kelmon Home computing? I already have a home computer. However I could definitely use one of these things at work instead of lugging a notebook and pen around to meetings.
@Yemble
Absolutely, this sort of thing will replace home computers. The #1 reason for this is that it is very simple whereas a modern home computer is still a relatively complex device. Add in the instant-on feature and convenient size and you have a winner.
@Kelmon
An iPad is not "simple", it's crippled. There's a difference.
@jedi
Yes, it's been crippled because it doesn't bring the complexity and baggage of a desktop OS. You can call it "crippled" if you like but I don't think the general public will see things that way. You don't have to buy one but I bet that the market goes this way when they realise that you can have computing but without the hassle.
@Kelmon But I already HAVE a portable home computer. As does every single person I know. I'm not going to buy a second one (iPad) and it can never replace the laptop as you have ably pointed out. I can see it being very useful outside of the home however.
I agree it's going to be super popular. Apple ain't stupid, even if many of their products are.
@Yemble
I think the situation depends on person to person. For example, my parents have a 17" notebook but the iPad would be a good replacement for it. They don't use the power of the laptop and they find Windows a bit scary. On the other hand, I still need a computer for developing my RAW photographs and that is something that the iPad cannot do at this time. However, I would certainly still buy an iPad because it is much better at doing generic tasks than my laptop is.
@Kelmon Unfortunately I think you're right. The iPad will still be popular with the general public that doesn't know any better. They don't know that you should be able to compose a document and listen to the music at the same time.
@truelove79
I think you've fallen foul of the FUD, mate. Whether the iPad will offer full multi-tasking for 3rd party applications remains to be seen (it seems to be likely for the iPhone OS 4.0 but in an unknown form) but you can absolutely write a document and listen to music at the same time. The thing is that Apple will need to introduce multi-tasking in such a way that makes sense and doesn't ruin the overall experience. I remember, with bitter experience, how bad this can be from Windows Mobile and its bloody task manager. No multi-tasking is better than bad multi-tasking so I'd much rather Apple gets the implementation right rather than rushing things. Given the success of the implementation of Cut/Copy/Paste, I'm prepared to wait.
@truelove79
I mean, c'mon, if the general public knew better, Dell would have been out of business years ago, and there would not be a netbook fad.
How can it be the 5 people that are pre-ordering the iPad crashing the site?
