Unreal Engine 3 adds extra dimension with NVIDIA 3D Vision
Epic Games has announced that its wildly popular Unreal Engine 3 has now added NVIDIA's 3D Vision to its list of supported technologies. We've already come across Batman: Arkham Asylum being played with NVIDIA's signature shutter glasses so this isn't a huge surprise per se, but it does put a stamp of compatibility on the vast catalog of games -- both current and future -- built upon Epic's graphics engine. Those include Borderlands, Mass Effect 1 and 2, Bioshock 1 and 2, and that all-time classic 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. The Unreal Development Kit -- a freeware version of the Engine for non-commercial uses -- is also being upgraded to make the addition of stereoscopic 3D effects "easier than ever," while other small improvements (covered by Gamespot) show that the Epic crew isn't standing still on its core product. Good news for all you mobile mavens wanting a taste of Unreality on your iPhones or Pres.

Cool
@Jacob Apple Geek Meh, Batman looks so much more cool without those glasses.
I'm not that impressed with the Unreal 3 engine. I've seen older games with better graphics. Hopefully the next engine will be more impressive and visually realistic.
@boe What do you think the current state-of-the-art engine is? Cryengine 3?
@RincewindWiz While I prefer some of the newer engines and yes, the crysis 3 engine looks sweet. If you look at the old lith engine I think used in FEAR, I think the graphics are better.
@boe Hmmm, yes Fear was impressive. I remember being amazed by the tech demos of Unreal Engine 3 when it first came out. It's funny how things that looked amazing at inception look dated so quickly when they're superseded.
@boe The engine has relatively little to do with how good a game looks. Its up to the developers to make it look good.
@XGM
But the engine does make it easier - particularly for consoles, where memory and cpu time is limited.
The more efficient your pipeline is, the better graphics you -may- be able to squeeze out of the system.
I wonder if Batman keeps his glasses on his utility belt.
as far as i understand NVIDIA's 3D Vision is compatible with pretty much all games so this is nothing new its just a compatibility sticker
@SchultzMD Yes indeed. Drawing two images from 2 different camera positions shouldn't be beyond the realms of any modern 3D-engine. Heck, you could do it manually! Draw frame #1... Strafe 10cm to the right... Draw frame for eye #2
Sooo, America's Army 3 can be played in 3D?
Sigh, just not that interested in this 3D tech. I guess I'm just old fashioned, and enjoy high res color accurate 2D.
YAAAAY Batman :D
No mention of their flagship?...Gears of War?
Engadget, correct the article. The Unreal Development Kit is for commercial use, so long as you eventually pay royalties on any profit that may be derived.
I don't understand what this exactly means, as you can already play any direct3d game in 3d with drivers for you 3d-device (for me it's the vuzix VR920 HMD)..
when is this stuff coming to the 360 and ps3?
