Confirmed: HTC HD2 will not be upgraded to Windows Phone 7 series

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Dear Internet,
It's time to move on.

@DirtyVegas
Nevar! This phone is sweet, and knowing the XDA devs they'll have WinMo7/Android on it well before it ever hits the scrap heap.
@DirtyVegas
Die Windows, Die!
@TonyMontana2367 There is now nothing keepin me from waiting for the Supersonic.
@Dear Engadget
Win7 isn't the kill all end all, especially with better firmwares out there.
@DirtyVegas Yeah, I agree. Also, why did everyone freak out when the ipad had a billion posts but when its a windows product, no one seems to care. Bit of a double standard if you ask me.
@rhcpsfan
Try this ... search on Windows 7 Phones and then the iPad. Count posts and then try and figure out why people were griping about the iPad. It should be apparent in about 2 minutes.
@Dood If you're gonna quote Shakespeare, do it right: it's "the be all (and the) end all".
:-)
Although your nickname "Dood", which I'm guessing is meant as a comically misspelt version of "dude", means "death" in Dutch so that might explain the "kill all" thing...
Sigh.
@DirtyVegas
Now engadget needs to make a no microsoft filter like they did apple.
Seriously how hard is it to consolidate all the news from an event into one topic???
@DirtyVegas
So true. I'm sure similar or better hardware be out by the win7phone launch. Or at least I hope so?
@OMJ
Seriously how hard is it to just scroll down?
@Robrecht
Sprechen sie deustch?
Und danke fur die lesson in shakespeare language. :)
@Sonic I see a lot of people with this answer. Please keep in mind, while XDA are making great strides, most of the phones have some sort of hardware support missing. For example according to the information on the forums my AT&T Tilt (TyTN II) does not have support for Bluetooth or the Camera when running Android. A lot of the ports have some hardware functionality missing. For me, I could live without the camera, booting back to WinMo when I need it, but I use Bluetooth a lot and can't have a phone without it now.
@bjsguess On January 27, the ipads launch day, the ipad had 19 posts. Today windows phone 7 series has had 12, and the day is still young. Doesn't seem like the iPad had that many more. So, I'm not really seeing how this is any different. I'm not mad about the amount of posts, however, just as I wasn't mad on the ipads launch day. I just get to read more awesome articles. I'm just saying that its annoying to see this double standard considering how horrible the commenting community was to engadget and its staff. just my $.02.
Too bad for WP7S.
@rhcpsfan
To be fair, that was 19 posts about a single product. 19 posts in addition to the reams of posts in the weeks preceding.
This is 12 posts about a whole new software ecosystem, a development platform, and hardware from multiple manufacturers.
Also, 19 is half again more than 12. You might be content weighing 180 lbs, I doubt you'd feel the same about 270lbs.
@OMJ You are over here on a tech blog complaining about a tech related post when you have your mac dedicated, sister site, tuaw which somehow always seems to spill over here. They need the overpriced glam gadgets over with the art kids.
@DirtyVegas
Sucks for T-Mo customers....
@Dood Dutch you idiot, not german
@Sonic
HD2 can stand on its own with WinMo. No need for WP7S hype.
@masochist No Way !! My HD2 is disgusted, as his master !
I really like as it is, but i really want WP7S...
Finger crossed at those XDA-dev genius !!!
Wow! Why would they do this? I would be a little upset if I was T-Mobile and HTC. I don't think many people will make a jump for a great phone that is soon going to be left behind.
@angermeans
Why is it bad? I like the HD2 interface more than the windows phone 7 'tiled' interface. There are still a TON of reasons to get the HD2. I know that there is a high likelihood that I will be purchasing on TMO soon.
@angermeans
Confirmed: I no longer care about Windows Phone 7 Series.
HD2 will be remembered as the last decent Windows Mobile phone before Apple I ment Microsofts Windows 7 series iPhone I ment Phone
RIP Windows Mobile (2000 to 2010)
@OCEAN CLAK Yeah I guess you are right. I maybe shouldn't of commented I have never even had a WinMo Phone I just figured that if they are moving to a different platform that HD2 buyers would have a little remorse. I apologize.
@angermeans
WTF, I'm an iPhone owner and I'm PISSED at this...
@angermeans
I'm going to wait until WP7 phones come out and pick up HD2 for cheappp
Quickly surveying the comments, these ppl are passing this phone up so demand = low, supply = many; price =
@sshole Lol me too! I just wanted this phone to succeed since it's so nice. I mean I know 6.5 isn't the worst but it's not WM7S with all of these new features. So the HD2 is sadly dead in my eyes, even though it's one of my favorite phones.
@niZmo
At least WinMo is going out with a bang and not a wimper. HTC must be feeling some hurt though. They can't get any love from the Apple lawyers or the Nexus One trademark idiots.
@jinjin Try before you buy, I've alot of hope for 7, but I didn't find 6.5 to be a hugley smooth experience on this handset, georgous hardware, something didn't feel right..
@geekthree that's what she said.
@jinjin i like the way you think but the layman will flock to this phone cause its bad ass
@OCEAN CLAK
Correction; HD2 will be remembered as the last decent Windows Mobile Phone that no one bought because it was exclusive to T-Mobile.
@angermeans - Never mind WP7, the BIGGER PROBLEM is not including the 850/1900mhz US 3G HSPA frequency! I mean what were they thinking?
I sent you guys a tip but you haven't seemed to pick up on it(though Gizmodo did) about divx support.

Saw this coming and am severely hurt :'(
And least they got it out of the way and said so
So HD2 with a search button launched as the HD3 this fall?
@hexoDAT64
Yea, I expect that HTC will have something good in the works to take the place of the HD2 with WP7.
@hexoDAT64
pleez pleez pleez pleez pleez pleez pleeeeeeeez...
I smell HD3.
@kenny goo Huh? HTC already announced coming out with a Touch Pro3 and HD3.
The HD2 by November will be over a year old, that's ancient in handset terms.
@MichaelSF Link to the HD3 announcement?
@Nitesh
All I could find:
http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/HTC-HD3-to-launch-with-Windows-Mobile-7-in-November-article-a_9203.html
NOT OFFICIAL though.
@kenny goo
Glad I got my HD2 early - by the time WP7S comes out I will have had my phone a year, and six months later I can move on up to an even more powerful model running.... Android.
For now I am very happy with 6.5 on my HD2 and it looks like the upgrade path for people who actually LIKE WM6 but want something more up to date is to go for Android.
@HotDog
That's a pretty grand rumor. A 4.5" screen upgrade over the already enormous 4.3" display? An HD resolution that leaps far beyond the WVGA industry leader? The next generation 1.5GHz Snapdragon chips that wont be out for a very long time? An insane 1GB of RAM when most of the industry is still between 256MB and 512MB? And to top it all of 32GB of internal storage?
Yea. I don't see this happening this year. Maybe next year, but that's a fucking absurd technological jump.
Correction, Confirmed: HTC HD2 will not be **Officially** upgraded to Windows Phone 7 series, but the XDA upgrade is right around the corner.
@thaprinze
Doubtful. WP7S isn't CE 5 based like the past 3+ versions of WM have been, so it's not going to be nearly as easy as it has been in the past. It may require a different bootloader, and it most certainly will require new drivers. So unless HTC makes a device with nearly identical hardware (Not just CPU, but Bluetooth, WiFi, etc), HD2 owners may be SOL
@EGOvoruhk
Not to mention that Microsoft has let XDA do its thing... but they will certainly sent a cease and desist letter, causing XDA to remove all WPS7 Roms.
XDA has always respected MS's desires, even though the last couple letters were faked.
Bottom line - WPS7 costs more per phone, and ported ROMS go around Microsoft's bottom line. Thus, they won't let it happen.
@EGOvoruhk: possibly, but people at XDA and elsewhere have been able to create full fledged Android ROMs for a number of WinMo devices (not just haret launchers).
Since the HD2 meets WP7S expectations except for RAM, I imagine a future HTC WP7S phone will be the key to getting it on the HD2.
