Acer unveils its thin and light Aspire TimelineX 1830T (update: other models too!)
We've heard plenty of chatter about something thin and sexy being added to Acer's laptop lineup, and finally the company has unveiled the Aspire TimelineX 1830T. It's under an inch thick and weighs 3lbs, with an 11.6-inch screen offering 1366 x 768 pixels and driven by integrated graphics. Acer simply lists an Intel Core 2 Solo processor, but others are reporting that it will feature a Core i5 520UM processor which can range from 1 to 1.8GHz to offer decent performance along with great battery life -- eight hours worth according to Acer, but we'll believe that when we see it. Wireless is over 801.11a/b/g/n WiFi, there's a VGA webcam in the bezel, three USB ports, and even HDMI output, making it a relatively port-heavy ultralight. What Acer is not saying is how much it will cost or when we'll be able to get our meaty paws on the thing, but we hope to learn those details soon.
Update: Acer sneaked in a bunch of other TimelineX models as well: the 13.3-inch 3820T, 14-inch 4820T, and 15.6-inch 5820T, each with your choice of Core i3, i5, or i7 processors, all under an inch thick, and again offering eight hours of battery life for frugal computers. No prices on any of 'em, though!

Mine has a
14" HD 16:9 LED
Less than 1" around 3lbs
Core2Solo 1.4GHz (integrated graphics Intel GMA4500MHD)
4GB RAM
320GB HDD
8+ Hours of reported battery life (really gets about 5-6 hours on 1 charge)
ALL FOR $350 Brand new!
This new one is rocking weaker specs, IT BETTER BE CHEAPER THEN MINE!
....if not, well than we know Acer is just being cheap!
@abedinthehouse
11inch is more expensive then 14inch less common screensize and smaller space to cram everything into
i have similar specs on my 13inch T3810 timeline as urs. and was fair bit more expensive then urs!
@abedinthehouse
Wait what?
How is this one rocking weaker specs? Especially if it DOES have a core i5 in there. That just blows your C2S out fo the water.
@abedinthehouse
Please come back when you've learned more about computers.
@abedinthehouse
"Core2Sulo"
HAHAHAHAHA
@roflcopter
I mean "solo". shit, I need coffee.
Forgot to mention
3 USB 2.0
VGA
HDMI
10/1000/1000 LAN
if this has a decent graphics it could be a cheap alternative to alienware m11x cause in aus. its tooooo expensive
@oringal and it does have decent graphics !!!!! ati 5650 :)
@oringal whether it comes to North America is an another issue entirely.
@aniym another issue peoplehave been discussing wrt to the 3820 is whether acer can provide sufficient cooling on such a thin laptop. the one with the 5650 is likely to come in at over $1k, so it's kind of expensive given acer's prior problems with build quality (ASUS is much better at this) and the heat generated by such a powerful gfx chip.
I must say that I'm impressed with Acer's netbooks. I typically only look at HP laptops, but Acer's netbooks are topnotch. I want to wait for the Chrome netbook to come out though.

dear acer, you make great laptops, but honestly who wants VGA out anymore? are we hooking this up to our decade old projector and CRT monitors?
drop the VGA port, drop the price, drop the bulge in the case that surrounds the port.
@willowtwf
reading fail... it said a VGA WEBCAM.. not a D-SUB port
@willowtwf
I want VGA. Anyone that does presentations at different locations wants it.
Pretty much all projectors I have come across at conference centers and hotels just have VGA input.
@Geesus
if you look at the image, you can see theres a d-sub port. I dont think dropping the port would save you too much tho
I have the 1810TZ (EU model ) it has a U4100 @ 1.3Ghz
I get about 6 hours with one charge with WiFi enabled.
It's a sweet little notebook. Small, light and power to run all of my apps, photoshop CS4 included.
( not a gaming machine, of course )
@jdripper I also have the 1810TZ (Olympic Edition) and i'm extremely happy with it. The size is perfect when travelling and the battery life is super considering its general performance. There are only two things that i can come up with that i'd like to see some improvement on, and that is the internal speaker which is crap and i'd also like to have a backlit keyboard for those times when its a bit dark.

No sure If I'm keen on the 15.6" HD 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, of the 5820 T.
Where is 1820PT at? Still waiting for Acer to make it available in US. :(
How much?
Yeah, but is it actually available for sale ? The 18*20*P-series tablets were announced in October, and you still can't buy one in Europe almost 6 months later.
@ChrisG http://geizhals.at/eu/a488344.html it's not the 1820PT but the PTZ.
I *think* the difference is on the cpu. I haven't checked but, as far as I remember, the PT has a Core 2 duo and this one a Pentium dual core
@indeed
Thanks for the tip, but I'd prefer to source one in the UK for "ease of warranty".
Very nice! I'm going to hold out judgement for pricing though..
Wow, I'm glad I read this article. I was JUST about to pull the trigger on an Acer 1810TZ! As long as this will be released soon, I'll hold out for the better processor.
I've got the weird, Gateway branded version of the earlier Acer 1410 - released only in Canada as the Gateway EC1803h. Decent price too: I got mine for $450 back in Sept. Couldn't be happier. The Gateway is the same as the Acer 1410 released in the U.S. but has 3GB of RAM instead of 2GB (unusal as hell for laptop to be released in Canada for the same price as the U.S. but with better specs). It only has the Core2Solo SU3500 @ 1.4 GHz but as various benchmarks (and real world usage) shows, that is considerably better than an Atom CPU (or was a few months ago at least). Too bad about the GMA GPU though.
Battery life is decent for a non-Atom netbook-ish laptop @ around 5 or 6 hours of real world use. I find the performance to be great running Window 7 compared to my earlier Aspire One Atom based netbook running XP.
If this continues the evolution then i'm sure it will be a great product.
@Atkins
Brown and dirty?
@nus Exactly. Someone here called it "metallic turd" (all credits go to him), which is quite a good description if you ask me.
@roflcopter What's the problem with core 2 solo?
@Atkins Found it. The original poster is Plexus. Here's the link:

Ahh, cool, nice looking laptop despite being odd coloured.
Its a shame I'll never buy another Acer laptop again in my LIFE!

I'm dying for one of these with the i7 or i5 UM processors! Why are they taking so long to come out?! And they better have express card or e-sata, damn it. Everyone been leaving this things out lately.
I want to know why the hell HD+ and 16:9 resolutions all of the sudden equate to 1600x900 rather than 1920x1080. I don't want some crap screen that's got a worse resolution than my 4 year old MBP with a resolution of 1680x1050, especially if I get a computer with Blu-ray. Come on people! Blu-ray is 1080p! That means 1920x1080!
@Atkins
Again that keyboard. Keys are way too close together, and far too spongy for my liking. I've been looking for a 11.6-12.1" CULV replacement for my NC10, but so far, I haven't found one. Oh well.
Hi im form singapore i will be getting my Acer 4820T on the 24 march 2010.im get this laptop through my isp broardband promo.

Acer was supposed to release details on the 1830 by the end of March. It's now March 31st and I haven't heard a word about it. C'mon Acer, fork over the details already!
